Hearing all the amazing stories from customers at work about how good steep is, i'm finally heading up there of the 9th January for the first time!
Mainly going to be spinning..
What are the must have lures for spinning from the point?
Bombers?
Nilsys?
Raiders?
Bibless high speed minnows?
stickbaits?
Anything else camping wise which is a must have would be good too, actually anything must have up there would be great!!

Surviving Kalbarri
Submitted by humantra on Sun, 2008-12-07 11:29G'day
I'm heading up to Kalbarri between the 27th of Dec and 3rd of Jan for a spot of fishing/diving. The only thing newer than the boat is the owners skippers ticket. Any advice on navigating the mouth and if my type of boat should do any type of offshore up that way at all? What type of wind and swell max should I be looking for?
Could be pushing it here but I would really appreciate any suggestions on where to go for a decent fish.
Thanks if you can help!!

Where and how to go abalone fishing in Augusta, WA
Submitted by Jason Kong on Fri, 2008-12-05 20:22Hi guys (and potentially girls :P),
I'm going to Augusta on wednesday for the first time with my dad. He told me that he went abalone fishing "back in the old days" for greenlip near augusta, but he can't remember where. Can anyone give me some directions to some good abalone fishing spots, and how to get there. Also, about how far out do i have to swim, and about how far down can i find them? I don't know if i can dive more then 5-6 m without weights.
Thanks,
Jason

My Holiday
Submitted by milsey on Tue, 2008-12-02 21:13Well finally exams are over, sorry I haven’t been posting a lot but I’ve been pretty busy with school, so now I’ve got some time I thought id put up some photos of my last school holidays.
A select group of guys were asked to go on a camp up in the Pilbra out at Dampia, where we spent 4 days self sufficient living on the islands, 5 sailing boats were supplied and they were equipped with 5hp engines which were extremely useful considering we didn’t even see a breath of wind for 3 of the 4 days. Most guys took rods, tackle and snorkelling gear. Heaps of fish where caught which was a first for many of the guys who went. And every one was glad to leave the rain and to get our tan game on.
We launched from foul pt and drove approx 15nm to whalers bay where we stayed the first night, the fishing was somewhat disappointing however the warmth and the beautiful water made up for it.

we awoke to a howling easterly which made getting to our desired destination of chook pt a little interesting in low gunnel sailing boats

however once there we saw our first shark and an array of fish,

we spent an hour or so throwing lures at local trevally, log toms and barracuda

we then went and set up camp further down the beach and went for a fish off the reef, we used school mackerel which we caught trolling on the way there for bait, first fish caught was a nice size mangrove, we spent a few hours catching spango’s, sharks, seaperch, small trout and lost countless rigs to monsters which we believe to be bluebone. Unfortunately we forgot the camera and stuff walking to get it. The next day we awoke to the best weather of the trip and decided to stay at chook bay another nigh so with the full tide we made our way over the shallow reefs and out behind the islands, with only one thing on our minds “fresh cray” however the majority of the group had never even a cray in the water so It was left up to me to catch a feed.

after a few minutes and one shocked look on my teachers face they decided we had enough, (Stuff that). So I grabbed the camera and took some shots

we headed back to camp and cooked up lunch and chilled for the rest of the arvo and just mucked around the camp

we then cooked up dinner and got ready to settle down to sleep. (NOT) me and a mate had a sic idea to stay up and go for a fish, so once every one was off with the ferries we got up and started collecting crabs for bait. Once we had a full bucket we started fishing. Straight in front of the camp we caught enough black spot sea perch for a feed, but us being lazy and 16yo boys we couldn’t be stuffed cleaning and filleting them so hey lets have some fun an see what lurking. We grabbed our heavy gear and went a few meters down the beach just past a reef, thew out a whole fish on 200lb mono trace running 55lb braid, within seconds we had our first run however it was off just as quick as it was on. I wound up to find that it was wire time, with 200lb wire traces and whole fish on surely we had a chance.

a few seconds later

a straightened swivel arrrrr these were not little sharks. Somehow my mate who was fish 30lb braid managed to hook a baby shark and landed it

So now I was devvo and I wanted to land one, with a new leader and new bait I was on, zzzzzzzzzzzzzz BANG again and again and again we lost 23 leaders and only one landed. It was pushing 2am when we heard a scraping noise which scared the crap out of us, we went and had a look to see a turtle laying

After a few shots it was back to the sharks
Now I used pliers to tighten my drag to the max to stop or slow them from getting to the reef

and it worked I had a huge run and It pulled into the drink and eventually turned it’s head and got it up to the shore one look at it and there was no way my mates were jumping in after that. We estimated it at 2-2.5m and up to 60kg with teeth I tried to lift it up but I bit straight threw, oh well it was enough for me.

We all went to bed with some stories to tell the next day. We awoke to an even better day than the previous

We quickly had breaky and packed for out return voyage and a quick troll.

Once out behind the island we rigged up and dropped our lures. I supplied my boat with my best and most lucky lures and It payed off a few minutes into the troll and we had a first few fish

I skull dragged this little yellow tailed scad and waited for a bigger fish and few more meters it happened

We were heading in for lunch so I was told to take my lure out as it had caught the first 3 fish dam so I gave my mate a guaranteed lure and within mins he had a new pb for his biggest, first and best fish of his life and his face showed it

After lunch we jumped back in and dropped the lures, a Rankin and an Estuary cod were caught over a reef and then the pelagic action started, well for our boat anyway

After our crew had all caught a few fish we were commanded to stop fishing because we had only moved a few hundred meters since lunch. Once our lures were out we started to get closer and eventually we were back in civilization, the remainder of the day was spend cleaning and we were taken into Karratha were we treated ourselves to HJ’s. then back to the rain and cold weather, I was told that two days before we got home it dropped down to 1 degree, stuff that.
The first week of the school holiday I spent down with some mates skerfing and mucking round then back up and over to rottenest for the second week. The fishing action was slow but we still managed a feed each day heaps some pics

So that was the end of the fun and the work began.
Cheers miles

Closest I've been to a fish in months
Submitted by Andy Mac on Mon, 2008-11-24 19:04With a trip to the Gold Coast with the wife and kids this is the closest I have been to a fish since I took Staal out for a fish last month. Unfortunately having just come out of hospital after lower back surgery It will be a few more weeks yet before I can get out on a boat and get into one myself.
Anyway here are some fishy pics to share from Sea World. The temptation to chuck a line in was unbelievable.

Exmouth in April - is it too busy?
Submitted by mtchye on Mon, 2008-11-17 16:02Gday fellas,
We're keen to give Exmouth a go in the week leading up to the Easter weekend - i think it's the 4th to 14th of April...
However I've been getting mixed views on how busy and crowded it is up there during those times. I know it isn't quite school holidays yet but I've been told the ramps and everything are just chockers even the week before.
What do you guys reckon? Is it still worth a go at that time or better to let the holiday periods go by?
Cheers

Jurien Bay or Busselton/Dunsbro' in Mid-November??
Submitted by jus on Thu, 2008-10-16 20:12Hey all,
New to the site but I was just wondering if I could pick all your fishing brains for an upcoming fishing trip...
Me and a mate are soon to get our RST and intend to mark this momentuous occassion by hiring out a boat and doing some offshore fishing in either Jurien Bay or down south.
I'll be keen for some bottom fishing and trolling too (hopefully), so where would you guys recommend at that time of year (fishing+weather wise)? What type of fish are we looking at getting around then?
Bearing in mind that we would have just got our RST's we probably wont be too keen on going very far offshore!
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
Cheers guys,
Justin

Exmouth, whose going, when and where are you staying
Submitted by Neander on Wed, 2008-10-01 13:09I am trying to work out my traveling/ accommodation dates for the Exmouth comp next year.
I am planning to head down to Ningaloo station for a couple of weeks afterwords and am trying to decide whether to go straight after the comp or stay a few more days in town.
Are people planning to stay in town for a few days after the comp?
Where are people staying?
I know Paul and Jessie as well as the Faulkners are at Lighthouse caravan park and they still have sites and cabins available.
Also what days are people departing Perth and would people like to head up in a group?
I finish work on the 29th in the arvo.

Lancelin Queens Birthday Longweekend
Submitted by Neander on Tue, 2008-09-30 21:44The long weekend was here and I was ready to have a few days off, sitting the boat during the day and drinking beer at night.
I was able to get away a bit early so I headed home and picked up the car and boat that was already loaded. Headed to pick up my mate who kindly volunteered to drive. I didnt argue as I grabbed a small esky and packed a 6 pack for the drive.
I had a good trip and was finishing the last of my six pack when we pulled into Lancelin. Set up camp in the back of my mates, lit the fire a sat around drinking and making rigs.
Saturday woke up feeling a little seedy, Nigel cooked up a feed and we launched the boat and headed out to do some exploring. I had only fished there once so didnt really have any places in mind so we just put on some miles.
I had a new sounder that I had no really idea how ou use. :) My noobness and the 2-3 m swell made finding a nice bit of ground to fish on in what seemed a barren wasteland. I caught a monster Cuttlefish that would of gone 50cm that was released. After 5 hours of stopping here there and everywhere finally managed to get a proper bite and pulled up a Dhu but was under size by 1cm.
And that was it for the day, headed back to another night by the fire and a bottle of bourbon and few beers and chatting to some other people that had rocked up to camp in a mates back yard. Our mate works away for 3 weeks in a month so his backyard is put to good use by a few of his mates.
On Sunday we were loading the rods when I checked the wheels on the trailer and found that we had done a bearing on the way up. Great, something to look forward to this afternoon.
Conditions were pretty much the same as Saturday light wind with a 2-3m swell. We spent a few more hours looking for a nice spot in 30- 40m without finding a good patch. A drift past an forgotten Cray pot saw me get a 40cm Sambo. Another 2 hours and we gave up the deeper water and headed for some reef closer to shore. We headed into 15m of water and finally found some fish, the sounder lit up and was happy to see that change except for a blank screen. So it does work, the fish have just been avoiding us.
A few drifts saw a number of undersized released when I picked up the first keeper
with Nigel getting his best pinkie 65cm. we ended up with 3 keepers but releasing a good number of undersize. I picked up a Dhu that was only again only 1 cm under, arghh but back in it went.

That afternoon we pulled the hub of the trailer to have the bearing drop on the floor as soon as the gap was big enough. Definitely stuffed. I have a spare hub ready to go so it was a quick clean up and on with the new.
It was a bit more subdued night as the last two were pretty hectic, bit of telly and an early night.
Monday we launched the boat only to find it wouldnt start. With a bit of screaming and cursing had the boat back on the trailer.
The boat had power to radio but nothing when I hit the start button. Hmm funky, check the cabling and the kill switch but looked ok. Nigel decided to rip the 2nd battery out Pajero and with lots of yelling and a fair bit of skin of the knuckles we swapped them over. hit the starter and nothing, I was pissed, the wheel bearing last night and now this. I was letting out some strong words when I looked over and noticed the boat was in gear. Ooops how did I miss that, sure enough started first kick. So battery back out and into the car and Nigel lost most skin of his knuckles. Hehehe he was pissed to say the least and I heard about for a few hours after.
Conditions were sweet. No wind and 1 meter swell so it made up for the previous afternoon and mornings efforts.
Found some nice ground, spotted some fish and lines were in the water. I had bought my small baitcaster so I baited up and was over the side and onto my best pinky. Gave the Abu a good little run and I was in with my best pinky.

Next drift and I was on again and my reel was screaming, Nigel started abusing me as he saw it as took a big run under and out the other side. Dhuie.
this is my best at 70cm and my baitcaster in 10 m

Nigel ended up another pinkie
and his first Dhiuie and was forgiven for the mornings blondness.
It was time to head back to pack up and go. I must admit that the weather was spot on and the trip back flat out.

So all in all it turned out a good weekend. I need a bit more time with the new sounder but am sure to have it sussed for my next trip when the ban is over.

Two Rocks Weekend
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Tue, 2008-09-30 19:12Decided to head up to two rocks for the long weekend . Set up camp at the capricorn caravan park would i recomment it mmmmmmm better not say *lol*
Met up with Paul G and Jesse friday night once again Paul thanks for letting us pick your mind for an hour and for pointing us into the right direction all weekend plus when you say it breaks at two odd mrts on the 3mile you were not joking *lol* coming in Sunday had one breaking in front and two behind us nothing like surfing in a 23 footer *LOL* . You are the tops mate thanks.
Well there were two boats my Sister inlaws 20 foot Ali and our 23 foot fibro (gear box all fixed $6400.00 odd dollars later lucky the Insurance paid just over half*S*) off we went to the west in about 40 mtrs of water , Saturday was slow and sloppy but fishable to us but unfortunitly the fish had different ideas.
Brenden got this Queen snapper and Sean on the above boat got a small one but his PB
![]()
Got a few Black Asse and Nathan got this Dhufish
Sandy caught the bait SBers and a very large Cuttle fish Nothing else caught but a good feed and day on the water
Sunday Started early at the boat ramp by 5.15am and Paul was already in the water with Colin and Jesse .Matt got there a bit latter and i was stunded by the line up for the ramp at that hour.
well off we went the wind was up a bit and there was rain all around us
Some were getting wet
But one one side of the boat great and the other side was white caps etc weird suff never got wet either
but it soon fined up to a great day had to do a bit of hunting for the fish but we ended up with
Two nice size Boldies, a few nice size snappers ,Small Dhu fish and a nice size black asse unfortunitly my Sister in law only got a giant flathead and australianas reefatartis *lol* a new breed of rock fish NOT.
All in all a really good couple of day away not many Dhu fish but what a great place to get away and fish or should i say get out fished by your 15 year old ha ha ha
Looking forward to getting back up there in January

Kalbarri in Dec/Jan?
Submitted by wicksey on Wed, 2008-08-20 12:24Hi guys,
looking to stay in an unpowered campsite over the xmas/new year period. managed to get in at tudor, which is fine. (whats better, murchison or tudor caravan park?)
my main concern is the heat. I havent been there in a few years but i wanted to figure out if its going to be ok for the "princess" in terms of heat.
When i used to go up there we normally stayed in houses etc, so the aircon was available to be cranked.
Has anyone done the above up there, and will it be bearble for HRH.
cheers

Going to Exmouth - Oct 08!
Submitted by wayneleech on Sun, 2008-08-17 21:10Hi All,
I've finally managed to get some hols sorted in the first week of October so am heading up to Exmouth for a week of fishing with a mate:) I've done a bit of land base fishing up there some time ago though haven't taken a boat up there.
We're staying at "Yardie Creek Homestead Caravan Park" and plan to launch at Tantabiddi boat ramp. Is there anything I should be aware of when launching at this ramp? I've got a trailcraft profish 5.4m and a Navara 4x4 ute..
It's always been a dream of mine (and my mates) to catch a Sailfish or Marlin. This is the one fish that I have a lot of respect for and to be able to land such a fish would be awesome! Does anyone have any tips for catching these? I was thinking that we would head out of Tantabiddi and would do some trolling up and down the back of the reefs... would this be a good area to start looking for them?
Because we are only there for 7 days one concern I have is the weather for that time of year. I've heard it can get a bit blowy in Oct/Nov. If this is the case is it still suitable to launch from the Marina and fish the gulf area?
Any advice / tips would be much appreciated! We'll be taking a digi camera and a video camera up there so I plan to document each trip out:)
Cheers
