Holidays - Fishing Trips

So where's your destination?

Wanted - Petrol Jerry Cans to buy or loan for Dirk Hartog mission

G'day all,

Does anyone have any plastic petrol jerry cans I can borrow or buy, for a 10 day trip to Dirk Hartog Island in June. We need to cart boat fuel. We need about 12 jerry cans all up, for about 240L of fuel.

We can buy them if necessary, or borrow in exchange for whatever you fancy.

Or does anywhere know of somewhere we could rent them?

Cheers, any help is much appreciated! Cant wait for DHI!! I've fished Steep Pt many times - always looking over at paradise...

Cape Latouche Treville, False Cape Bossut, False Cape Creek qn?

Anyone fished these areas from the shore? Heading that way in a week and a half staying at Port Smith Cara park, and being from east coast any info would be handy..

Cheers

Exmouth the slow way

I'm heading up to Exmouth last half of May and thought I would take my time getting up there to fish some spots along the way.

I'm staying with a friend in Geraldton, and wanted to jump on a day charter on the Mahi Mahi II in coral bay, then a few days LB in exmouth before the rest of the guys get to exmouth for the trip. In between that is completely flexible.

Leaving before the weekend then in exmouth mid next week.  Any decent spots I should be stopping at along the way? Abroholos trip would be good, but trips are usually over the weekend, so will have to wait for that.

I wouldnt mind getting some big tailor, or perhaps some mulloway/jews from a jetty, but pretty flexible for most parts. More into lure chucking than beach fishing though.

Wagoe, Steep Point and Quobba get mentioned a lot, but I'm not sure on the suitability as I wont have 4wd (gravel roads will be ok though). Not sure about fishing steep or quobba alone either?

So any suggestions on worthwhile spots to stop?

S Bend

A mate of mine suggested we head to S bend for a few days fishing in June.

Anyone been there before and knows if its a good time of year for fish to be on the bite? Also is boat launching possible there or should we stick to fishing from the beach?

Thanks alot, Kane

Dirk hartog or Exmouth

Trying to organise a trip for next year.

2 places on the agenda at the moment is Dirk Hartog and Exmouth (With the possibility of going upto Karratha as well)

Interested to know peoples opinions on each.

If we went to Dirk hartog we would be camping on the Island and would have 3 boats, 23ft PMY centre console, 25ft Blackwatch centre console, and 26 ft fury centre console, so travelling isnt an issue.

If I go to Exmouth, would more than likely be just my boat (25ft fury) with the possibility of a 22ft Razorline coming (Further to travel towing a heavy boat).

I would have thought dirk hartog would have been less people visit it rather than Exmouth???? especially by boat???

Dirk hartog would be for 11 days, and Exmouth would be for 2 weeks.

Has anyone been to both and could compare???

Mainly want to chase northern spoecies, like Coral trout, Red emperor, mackies etc.

Any info on both would be greatly appreciated, IE is it expensive to stay in Exmouth on a bungalow at the caravan park? is it far fromt he Caravan park to the boat ramps?

Thanks guys

Bodie

Port Smith Lagoon - on foot - suggestions?

Heading to Port Smith Lagoon in late May.. will be on my own and only 2wd vehicle (heard the road in is ok for 2wd).

I've read that the lagoon is accessible by foot when the tide is out.. but wondering what the options are when the tide is up? I looked at google earth and it's a fair hike to the beach if forced to walk around the lagoon.

Any suggestions for options?

Coral Bay Report

I just got back from a camping trip to warroora station, located just south of coral bay, did ok on the fishing front so thought id put up a few photos and a bit of a report.

Left Perth Saturday morning, about 3am to get a good headstart on traffic, the ol non turbo hilux and boat were fully loaded and the hilux appreciated the cool night air giving it that little extra power as we roled out of Perth rolling along between 80 - 90kms all the way. We made it to Carnarvon about 2 30 in the arvo I guess, found our motel and settled in to sink a few coldies for the night before heading the rest of the way north in the morning.

boat and hilux fully loaded

Sunday morning came and we headed the remaining trek to waroora station, the weather wasnt looking great but we thought hey, weve got a week, it should come good, we found no spare camp spots left on the beach but that didnt matter as the wind was blowing havock with the vans so we were happy to spend the time a little more sheltered in our tents over the back of the 14 mile beach dune.

So we got our campsite, paid the caretaker and started setting up camp, not long after getting the tent up i noticed we picked up an unwelcome friend on the track through the station, i piece of steel felt like coming along for a ride puncturing my tyre in the process, and on a public holiday long weekend with 2 full days to wait before we could drive all the way back to carnarvon to get a proper repair done ( no decent tyre guy in coral bay - whats with that ). Anyway we got a temp repair on it with a plug which we limped around on for the next few days, all good.

 Setting up the camp

 The plug and the puncterer

Setting up camp and plugging the flat tyre

The weather to put it nicely was crap, but hey, we werent fussed, wed get the tyre fixed tuesday, then we still had a few days before we planned to head home and  decided wed stay longer if needed to get the boat out for at least one days good fishing. Also there was a big mother of a croc in the area we were camped so diving in the same area was not advisable, (this was caught a day or two after we got there a few kms south of our camp)

Wednesday came around and the weather was a little better, not good enough to get out to the outside of the reef though but at least good enough to get the boat wet and have a scout around the inside of the reef for a couple of hours. We decided to have a traul before the winds picked up again sending us back to the beach to retrieve the boat. (we were playing things faily safe as that same week 3 boats had been capsized in the same bay, one being a brand new 5 metre trailcraft, now with no equipment, no working electronics and a new engine requiring a rebuild....

My boat in the water (once for the trip)

After checking the forecast we decided we had better get a better plan as the weather gods werent interested in helping us out on this trip so we fanged into coral bay to book on a fishing charter for the next day and a dive charter for friday.

Thursday came around and we were hmmmm well after previous metro charters i have to be honest, we werent expecting a great day, we arrived early to get some breakfast and i bought along my penn overhead setup for its maiden use, we then met up with about 5 other people making for 8 total fishers for the boat, a good improvement on metro charter straight away...

We then were told we would attempt to get some billfish on the way out and back and would bottom bash when we got to location, to make it fair we all picked a card, he who got the ace got in the chair first if we got a hook up on a billfish, then 2 then 3 then 4 etc...I didnt have any expectations but drew the ace card first and was up if we got a hook up, again i was very very happy with this but wasnt to be ohnest expecting big things (purely from dissapointing metro charters id been on previously)

About 30 minutes after putting the lures out bang we were on and it great fashion, the sailfish we had hooked was putting on a fantastic arial display and i was in the game chair before you could blink, the other rods were wound in and i was given the prize rod to fight the best fish of my life with, it was tiring winch to get it in but no way was i going to let this baby beat me, not on your bloody life! It didnt take too long and I had it up to the boat, Im not to sure of the size or weight as we didnt bring it aboard, just alongside to tag and release where i got a few photos of my fondest catch to date.

My first billfish, will take alot for me to top this catch!

After that we put the lures back out and within 20 minutes we were on again, this time a young lads number was up, he musnt have been anything over 12 or 13 and he too was onto a beautifal sailfish also keen on showing us an arial display. He too got it in with very good coordination mind you and this fish was also quickly tagged and released.

After this we set up for some bottom bashing, the rest of the boat used the supplied alvy deck winches, i used my overhead penn rod and 30vsw reel for the first time, and dam it showed the difference it made, i reckon i caught double everyones catch purely because of the feel of the 80Lb braid compared to the 150Lb mono they were forced to use. I was there with my father in law and younger brother and the three of us caught well in excess of 40 good sized fish (prob closer to 50 i reckon), the excess of our limit was given to the other fishers onboard who didnt manage to get their quota for the day.

We caught all sorts, Spangled emperor, Red emperor, Diamond trevs, GTs, Robbos, Rosies, Goldband etc etc too many to remember them all im sure.

There was some more excitement as a 100 kilo plus sailfish jumped onto my neighbours snapper rig and managed to wrap itself around the anchor chain 3 times, this too was quickly set free and my neighbour was chuffed he could now brag he had caught a fish of this stature on basically a big hand line!

My first fish on my penn overhead setup

Father in law got this shark on his alvy winch

My little bros first catch of the day

The catch we kept for the day (the three of us not the whole boat)...can anyone tell me what the fish is that looks similar to a dhuie in the blue bucket, i was disappointed when the skipper told me it wasnt as im still yet to catch one.

On the way back in we again had the skirts out didnt get a third hookup but we did saw an awesome arial display off on the port side about 50 metres away, one or possibly two sailfish going nuts in the air for about 3 minutes constantly, we swung the boat over their but no hookups on that occasion.

We got in and the crew filleted our catch and bagged it all up for us (thanks guys!) and our engel got a gfood workout freezing it all down overnight.

The next day I did the dive charter had a few nice dives, saw some nice things including a reef shark cleaning station, big groper etc and then spent friday arvo and saturday first thing packing up and hitting the road, of course to top the trip off we got bogged dragging the loaded boat through the dunes out of waroora and had to let the tyres back down to get out of the sand then when we arrived at the main road and went to pump the tyres back up my compressor blew up snapping a conrod on the pump, luckily after about 45 minutes someone stopped and gave us some air so we could hit the road at a speed over 40 kph. Anyway then we drove back to perth in one hit taking about 16 hours to get back and arrived in the driveway around midnight.

Tip to others we were told from the locals.....waroora is possibly the worst place to stay for wind, head to coral bay or north of it if you intend to go, next time well head the north side as the locals told us its natoriously windy the south side of coral bay but much calmer the north side, thats coming from the fishing charter skipper whos being doing it 18 years plus so its a reliable tip.

All this typing has got me thirsty and hungry too, better get a beer and some red empreror out of the freezer for tea tonight, got lots of fillets to get through!

Thanks for reading, Kane

Kalbarri payback post

All. I've just joined this forum recently. I live in Sydney, but am going to travel to Pt Smith Lagoon and Cape  Leveque in late May so have been reading and asking some questions trying to get some tips. I normally fish finesse v light sportsfishing tackle here in Sydney, so the whole pelagic / northern scene is pretty unfamilair to me, as are a few of the species. The forum has been very helpful.

Since I live on the east coast I don't have too much to offer a west coast forum for fishing posts.  However I did make a trip to Kalbarri last year, so I thought I'd share some of my experiences there, hopefully as some form of payback for the help I've been getting! Hope this helps - and feel free to PM me if you're thinking of hitting Sydney or surrounds

I was in Kalbarri in Jan. The town is set on the Murchison river. When I was there the westerlies were pretty fierce for the first few days, there's a bar crossing to get outside, but the westerlies didnt seem to make the bar crossing much harder. Reason being the bar crossing runs north south, and on the outside there is a rock bar which also runs north south and provides some protection from the open water when you run the bar. At low tide the bar can be quite shallow, and I was watching the cray boats come in and I was sure they'd bottom out. Potentially others can give advice on the bar crossing there as I've only done it during this time of year over a period of a week - but it seems pretty reasonable as far as bar crossings go. Just as an example there were 4m tinnys towing skiers through the bar crossing on several days.

This is the Murchison looking towards the town jetty where the cray boats pull up

The mouth of the river is a popular spot to fish. I saw a few tailor get spun up there. Also the town jetty and the beach at red bluff are popular tailoring spots. I went for a snorkel at red bluff beach and the sea bed there is a terminal tackle graveyard. A lot of weed and rocky terrain down there - but they say a lot of big tailor are caught there.

Anywhere inside the mouth of the river is good for blue manna crabs and we caught a stack. A lot of throwbacks due to size but fun for the kids. Further upstream the river is known to produce school jew, but I never fished further up.

Outside the 2 most popular locations are the sand patch and bald face. We didnt get a lot of info from the tackle shop about where to fish but we were able to work out where those locations were. I've included a shot of the sand patch - the landmark is basically where the scrub on the coastline disappears and there are large dunes.

This is the sandpatch

Actually now I remember I can't say my tackle shop experience was good at Kalbarri. Just about in all fishing mags and articles about locations the advice is to talk to the local tackle shop owners for basic location information. But really the info and help we got from there was nothing compared to reading online. I'm far from the greatest fisho, but I'm not a complete novice either so I understand basic etiquette, but in the tackle shop I was made to feel like a bit of a nob. The shame about the situation is that I am someone who will drop cash in a tackle shop at the slightest drop of a hat. But after my experiences there (and it wasnt just a single random time it happenned) I wasn't the slightest bit inclined to spend any more money than I had to. </rant>

There were a few spanish macks about which were fun to get into.

The local swimming beach inside the mouth of the murchison is Chinamen's Beach. Has some good snorkelling and reefy areas, and it's near the boat lauching ramp and jetty also..

This is Chinamen's beach

Of course quite close by there's the national park and Nature's window and the scenery is magnificent. Was my first WA experience and I totally loved it. Looking forward to getting to Broome / Pt Smith Lagoon and Cape Leveque next month and experience more of the west!

GUTTED

Doctor confirmed yesterday after scans - severe muscle tear (forearm) and 75% tear through tendon; Surgery required asap.

Hmm, no wonder my arm hurts so much.

So unfortunatley, I'm a no goer for Exy(sorry Noha and scottnofish) or anything else exciting for awhile.

Where is that bloody Karma now?  Help a stranger out at Hamo bay in rough conditions by maning the trailer winch; rusty bloody cable snaps under high load and I end up with a stuffed right arm.

Sucks!

Cheers Pete

That time of year - Holidays

Well its that time again (my April trip). A few days to go till I head off to Smoky and Streaky Bays on the west coast of SA, and I'm sitting at work wishing I was already there with a line in the water (driving over on Thursday).  Getting almost two and a half weeks this time so looking forward to the break (no mobile phone service and no work calls !!).

Will let you know how I went when I return and hopefully with a few good pics and tasty fish as well.

Cheers to all and good luck with your own fishing over easter etc

Paul

Hand feed blue fin tuna

While back in South Aus a little while ago in Port Lincoln went out to a tourist style tuna farm, no where near as full with tuna as the working farms but still good to hand feed some fish and go for a snorkel with them too.

The actual pen is identical to the working farms just not loaded with anywhere near as many or as big fish.

Excuse my butt crack Wink, fiesty little buggers, one kid got his toes bit while he was snorkelling with them, blood everywhere, must have looked like a nice little pilchard to them.

Heres an underwater shot...bluefing tuna doin their thing.

And then one of me swimming with em, toes and fingers tucked away so they dont become lunch! haha, everyone was swiming like that after that kid got attacked! quite funny to watch.

After we had some tuna sushi for lunch on the boat ride back into town, bloody beautifal! Thanks for viewing.

Fishwrecked EXXY Comp

Hi Guys/Gals,

Just trying to do some organising for the Exmouth comp in terms of prizes.  Could all skippers/deckies sort out their entry fees so that I know how much we can put into each section, please send me a PM so we can sort it out.  Its going to be much easier doing it over the next few weeks and will save a lot of hassle rather than doing it the night before the comp.  The entry fees are $10 per person, if you wish to give more it all goes to boosting the prize kitty

Can members also please get themselves a ruler to measure demersal fish, as it will be a photo based comp on sizes, rather than weight.

Assuming there are 50 people thats $500 - which can be $50 worth of prizes for 8 sections and 1 $100 prize.  Here's a basic idea of what I'm thinking.

Biggest Marlin = $50

Biggest Sailfish = $50

Most Billfish Caught and Released = $100

Biggest Red Emperor = $50

Biggest Spangled Emperor = $50 + Fisheries research shirt/stubby holders

Biggest Spaniard/Wahoo = $50

Biggest Dolphinfish = $50

Biggest Rankin Cod = $50

Biggest Landbased fish = $50

Biggest Tuna = 3 Daiwa Long Sleeve Shirts +

Biggest Coral Trout = Large print of u/w Trout photo

The Faulkner Family has also donated $100, so they can choose where that money goes or create their own prize fish.

This is just a vague idea of how things will be broken up.  If there is more than the $500 donated, which looks like there will be (thanks Pilbarabrad) then the prizes for each section can be boosted or we can add a couple more sections.

I also want to know, apart from Pete D/NOHA/Scottynofish who else will be staying in town or is everyone at the lighthouse?  Just so we can organise a get together the night before the comp and a night afterwards.

Cheers,

Adam

Wedge, Tailor

Hi all, just wondering if there is much action on the tailor front around Wedge?

Broome

Hey fellas when I come over in August I will be spending 2 or 3 nights in Broome.  I have heard the pier is good for trevs and queenies?  How should I target these and is it better at day or night.  Wouldnt mind a shark either, i reckon they would be better at night??   If anyone wants to meet me down there and have a fish and a beer then PM me and I will let you know where and when..I coul;d use some local knowledge LOL!!

Cheers Rayman

Our trip out on 8/3/09

On sunday it was our club day which meant 6 am on the water and a 4:30 wake up call. When we launched the boat it was still pitch black so it was all lights on and a slow but steady pace out our first stop. by 6:60 the light was starting to come through so it made it a bit easier to spot the cray pots.

Our first stop was in 30 mtrs after a few sand whiting ,first few fish on board were a few scad and a few slimeys (great fresh bait)then we finally got a few whiting to 25cm.That was it we headed out to a deeper spot where we have caught a few bits and pieces before but today no such luck apart from a few nibbles nothing. In search of some fish we decided to move off , but before we could Nathan hooked something huge using the head amd body of a slimy after i had removed the fillets for bait on other rods

This fish took off on a blistering run taking about 50mtrs of line first up ,gaining a bit back after a small tweek of the drag the fish took off again but this time not as much , slowly wearing the fish out (not to mention Nathan) he was now gaining line back . after a few suggestions at what this might be and a 20 minuit battle it finally came into sight

yes it was a decent sambo , being carefull not to lose it at the boat we had the net at hand , but this one was just a bit big so we managed to get head in the net and with a free hand grabbing the tail it was on board , high 5s all round it was time for a pic of the catch

Nathans face says it all but he was exhausted and retired for the day

Not much else was caught for the day after searching many different areas all we managed was me with a average flatty and Sandy with a 4 1/2 kg Queenie.

Total catch for the day with 3 of us was 4 scad 4 slimeys 1 big sweep 1 flatty 4 whiting and of cause 1 sambo, but we released 2 B/Ass just under size , 1 Red just under and 3 small flattys

Fishing Leeman and Greenhead

Thinking of doing a long weekend run up to Greenhead and was wondering if anyone knew what the dhuie fishing is like up that way and how safe the boating is regarding reefs, passges and swells ect. Have a good chart plotter on board a 5.2m savage. Also, is the caravan park worth staying at in Greenhead?

Exmouth Last Week Sep

Good day guys.

Planning a trip to Exmouth last week of september will be there  for about 10 days.

No boat Cry  but from what i hear and read there is great fishing off the beach.

My question is about the time of year ( what type of fish will be biting ), And what type of tackle shoud i be taking?

I would love to try fishing with poppers and metal slices will i be wasting my time?

Thanks

Worroora station virgin

Hi

So from previous threads Ive been given the tip that if camping near Coral bay Warroora station is a good place to go. Im leaving perth on the 11th April with boat in tow, decided to drive to Carnarvon, overnight there then get to Warroora first thing the next morning fresh to set up camp.

I guess as I have never been there Im looking for more info so I know what to expect when i get there, they have a very good website so thats been a help for camping rules etc but I am more interested in the fishing side of things which they dont really go into.

Ive been spending up lately on some good quality quite heavy duty fishing gear, I see Exmouth comes up regularely for catching GT, Mackeral, Sailfish, Marlin etc.

I would love to get into those but do they swim futher south from Exmouth down to the area near Coral Bay / Warroora?

Also due to having never been there before, I understand the reef runs all along the coast, but as Im taking my boat to beach launch, if the weathers good Id be really keen to get outside of the reef to fish, are there plenty of channels to pass through to the outside of the reef?

Also as a keen diver Ill be taking all my gear up with me, are there any stand out places you would reccommend not to miss in that area?

As always all opinions appreciated.

Thanks alot,

Kane

fly fishing

Hey guys

Looks some good fish caught recently...am loving the shark caught in the swan river, is that Perth?  just booked up a fly trip on true bluebonefish from exmouth in August I cant wait...anybody been on it or know him, his web site looks awesome!!

Rog

Coral bay here i come

So Im booked in for a camping trip to coral bay mid april, yep im excited. Never been there but I got some god info on camping spots etc from a previous thread but Im wondering what to expect as per the fishing?

I see alot of guys getting mackeral up there but what else should i target and expect to catch? I have to admit of an envy of the karratha boys getting gts, is there any hope of getting onto some out of the coral bay area? any other target species and any advice what so ever would be fantastic.

Thanks,

Kane

Hamelin Bay

I need some info from a SALMON FISHING point-of-view. Am thinking about heading down there in mid to late March, staying at the caravan park, probably tenting it for a few days.

Are the salmon running consistently past the park for much of the day during that time? Can I use light gear, including 2-4 kg line and lures going down to 5 and 7 grams? Or is it 10-12 foot beach rods and mulies/heavy metals? In other words, how much casting distance is required?

Also, what's the boat ramp like? Is it for tinnies only or can it handle a bigger (19 foot) boat? Also, I hear the cray diving is pretty good down there...worth taking the dive gear?

Lastly, anyone else thinking of doing the same thing? My plan is salmon/crays all day, Coopers Pale Ale all night, and that's about it!

Exmouth Decky in May

Hey guys.
that time is fast approaching as we can see by the amount of NW threads etc.
i will be in exmouth with a few mates deckying on their 6m ally from 15-23 May.
what i'd really like to do is spend a week or so either previous or post that time
(so the second or last week in may).
is there anyone who would need a decky at that stage?
i have all me own gear and a reasonable amount of knowledge of the tantabiddi area.
especially inshore/nearshore for spangos, trev and spaniards.
keen as to fish and never get seasick.
pay my way and pull all the anchors. will go in for accom or find my own no dramas.
pity i'll be too late for the comp but what can you do? this has been booked for a year unfortunately.
anyone who may be able to help, please pm or reply or leave msg on 0427005873.
cheers

Some ideas on the annual fishing trip please

Hey All,

Just looking for some input & comments on doing the annual fishing trip this year.

Pretty much can swing 1-2 weeks off work any point of this year from March to September.

Budget isn't really too much of an issue, except the cheaper the better :)

We have a 23ft walkaround with 200 on the back.

Would say we (myself, brother in law, 2 others) are 'intermediate' anglers.....

Options that we have considered (but I am sure there are others);

1) Abrolhos on a charter - have done this twice, great time, good fishing - if you have the weather.....cost = relatively cheap, time required = low

2) Charter to Montebellos - looks awesome... cost= high, time required= more

3) Take the boat up to the Mackerals either on a 'seafari' or go it alone, cost=medium, time required=medium.....

4) Take Boat to Kalbarri, low cost, low time req'd

Would like a good mix of bottom fishing, sport fishing whatever...

I am also supposed to be doing a 3-4 week trip with the missus sightseeing the Kimberleys sometime between June - Sept, so tying that in would be even better.  Wouldn't be towing the boat all the way up there though :)

Anybody got ideas/input?  Much appreciated :)

Cheers!

Pete

Furuno 620

G-day

ive got a furuno 620 and have it set to bottom lock wich has the bottom 5 metres one side and on the other side of the screen the top of the water to the bottom of the water. what i want to do is set it so i have only the bottom half of the water collum on the right hand side but still have the bottom lock on the other side. Hope that makes sense.

Cheers connors

Jurien over Easter

I know it's a bit early for some but is anybody planning on going to Jurien over the Easter school holidays? Looks like I'll be taking the boat and a couple of the ankle-biters up there in anticipation of warmer water and spaniard/tuna! Be good to meet up with some members for a fish and a beer if anyone on here has similar plans.

Steep Point 09

Gday All,

Just got back from Steep, had a ball...

Even though the fish weren't firing like they usually do we still got plenty of macks, baldies/parrot fish, coral trout, spangos and some nice jumbos

macks ranging from 8-13kg..

biggest cray went 140mm carapace

Cheers
