Troubleshooting 25hp Merc

Hey team.

So in preparation for our trip to Ningaloo in two weeks, I took the tinny to a reputable service centre in the south east and get it serviced. The only thing 'wrong' with it was it occasionally stalled at trawling speed. Bit of a pain but not a biggy.

So post service, I took it out of woodies a fortnight back and upon starting, it stalled. Started again and held the choke out. Once ready to putt out, I put it into reverse and it stalled. Started ot again and gave it curry in reverse and it stayed running but stalled when I slowed down. Started again, threw it into forward and off we went.

Throughout the day, each time I put it into reverse it would stall and take a couple of goes to start again.

We did 18 miles throughout the day, most of which was at 18 knots.

when we got home, I couldn't start it to flush for about 18 hours so took it back to the mechanic and they said it looked like the fuel line had delaminated and caused a blockage that only impacted a low speed. Odd but makes sense when they sent photos of the chunks of fuel hose.

This brings us to yesterday evening where we took ot down to Deep water point to ensure all was good. Launched fine and it started fine. Put it into reverse and it instantly labours and stalled. I was able to start it and drive away moving fairly to full noise quickly and then slowing down 10 seconds later as it stalled.  Claire thankfully suggested I go into the wind to drift back if need be and I am glad I did.

I got out the paddle and started going back to the ramp while calling the service centre to give them a mouth full. I got it started again for 3 seconds, long enough to direct the boat to the jetty before stalling and managed to get it running once more when tied up but it stalled without load.

Claire dropped it off at the service centre today and they said it started first go and is running without problem. Forward, reverse, high speed and low speed. Same fuel same tank.

They are keeping it overnight and will start it again tomorrow morning and I'll run it when I pick it up in the afternoon

What in the hell am I doing wrong? I really don't want to get stuck off the back of the reef off Ningaloo....

any thoughts?

Similar probem

Had a brand new yamaha 25 on my 12ft tinny, went darn well @wot but trolling was gumming up the spark plug, widened the gap and that worked better, finally got a "hotter" spark plug and had no more issues. Surely the factory have known about this issue but weren't going to fix it.

Hope you get it sorted mate. An outboard you don't have confidence in is not a good thing. At least you're clever and didn't wait until the week you were leaving!

Sounds like the whole system - tank, lines, filter and carb need a good clean out. Once that shit gets in it can cause havoc with the jets and so forth.
I bought a tinnie that had the motor sitting for a long time, fuel had turned to jelly in the carb, would run fine at rest but out on the water it was a different story as the jelly would sit at a different angle under power in the fuel bowl and would cause the float to prematurely close the seat and lead to the motor stalling.

So I have picked it up and it is running fine. Not a worry at all.

They said they have cleaned out a few other bits and showed me some tips on cold start as it may help.

I will take it for a blast on Saturday and see how it goes...

Thu, 2022-06-16 20:05

Took the tinny out in the river this evening with the kids and it ran beautifully. Gained a couple of knots which was great too. Seems the fuel pump flush has done the job for us.

'House' Battery in the car, installed last week seems to have sorted itself out and is fully charged yesterday via DCDC which has taken a stress off the brain. it was saying it was full but absorbed charge for 5 days. Seems the shunt shows full once you turn it on regardless of the true state of charge.

Wife tested positive very early this morning and we're off in 9 days.....Do we all try to get it now or avoid and risk getting it in 7 days? First night at Ningaloo station is in 14 days....

 Timing sucks mate! If it

Fri, 2022-06-17 10:39

Timing sucks mate! If it were me I wouldn't try to catch it or try to avoid it - just let it take its course. I know plenty of people who have not caught it despite the rest of the family or several members getting it. Chances are you and the kids have already been exposed to it. If you end up with it for the journey up north just avoid people till you've done your 7 days.

For the rest of the family I hope you escape it and can go on your holiday.

Touch wood . Sandy or I have not copped it yet.

Yes I hope the little bloke is okay with it. You would definitely have been exposed so you'll either cop it or get lucky. Should be fine for your trip hopefully.

How old is your kid? Worse we had was 4 in one night and two ambulances. Pretty full on when you just have to sit back and watch until it stops...watching the clock hoping it stops.

My young bloke is 5 and his first was when he was 3. I learnt pretty quick that as soon as you hear the scary sound I wet a towl and strip him down and try my best to cool him off with out stressing him too much till the body temp drops enough to come to then just comfort him for a little while after with out stressing him. Only been a handful of times over the years. But 4 in one night would've been torture for all of you. I'll happily be sick 10times over if it means the little ones are OK.

Mon, 2022-06-20 13:44

Cheers fellas. So far so good. Boss is pretty much back on track and the young bloke is full of perk but needs panadol every 6-8 hours just to take the top off it.

Not well enough to be at school if it was just a cold but well enough to be bored shitless and not want to sit down.

He was being a walrus earlier with a connector pen up each nostral so that gives you an idea of how he is feeling.

Fingers crossed, mate! No temp since 0340 yesterday morinng so hopefully the spicy cough gods took him into account when they designed it.

The house boss should be firing on all cylinders today. Did a gym workout (via video chat) yesterday and scared it out of her system.

Daughter (whom I specifically showed 'the boy who cried wholf' yesterday afternoon) claims she has a sore throat.....but her bestie is off school and her brother gets to stay home for a week. No other signs of the spicy cough and not testing positive so I am not sure there.

Tomorrow will be the 7th day of having it in our house. We have been very lucky so far.

Tue, 2022-06-21 10:59

Monday departure at this point. Nerrin Nerrin then perhaps Denham / shark bay then Carnarvon then Ningalloo for 10 nights. Have a week to get home after then so we'll see where we go with it.

Just need everyone to be healthy!

Just doing the sums in my head and new battery set up in the car, new tent and the tinny comes to around 10k. Costs a lot to 'free' camp

Tue, 2022-06-21 12:18

Had a Pi55 stop at Nerrin Nerrin on the way back from up north recently. It amazed us the amount of rubbish strewn around the place, filthy lazy grubs can't use a bin.

We have taken the same pit stop and yeah, the rubbish is mind numbing.

I dont get how people just dont care. Same as the grubs out the front of work who go fishing...because the environment is relatively well kept and therefore fish thrive....but they leave their bait bags and associated crap on the beach.

Point Billie is all we could get after doing the midnight thing two nights in a row. Joys of school holidays.

Looks like its not too much of a trip out for deep water so have some deep stuff but without a sounder, it will be dumb luck if were catching out there....it will be dumb luck if we catch anything at all for that matter....but i have enough stuff to throw at the ocean just in case there is something feeling gullable.

Haven't been to that one but I'm sure it'll do the job. Even without a sounder you should be able to locate drop-offs on Navionics to troll for mackies etc. Dumb luck has caught me some great fish up there at times!

Keen to hear how you go, we will be up there in about a months time. Sounds like a similar tinny setup to us

Ive just decked the cruiser out with lithium in the back & about to chuck the same in the camper after our last trip the freezer was a bit touch an go with solar and being parked up for a while. Not a cheep thing, but hopefully stress free power while on holidys will be worth it, set and forget hopefully!

Goodluck!

Squid was the only bait I

Sat, 2022-07-16 20:45

Squid was the only bait I found for bottom species. Apparently there are plenty in the bay but we saw none!

Sharks responded to the boat going out of gear and took anything bigger than a tuna including three monster Spaniards.

take plenty of 120-150mm lures
