Shimano Baitrunner D or Thunnus Ci4??
Submitted by jus on Mon, 2010-08-16 16:42
Just thinkin its time for a new reel and am having a bit of trouble choosing between these 2 quite beautiful reels :). The last image is me trying to see the difference between the two at work + having a little too much free time!
Here are the pro's and con's for the baitrunner D for me:
BAITRUNNER D
Pros: Available in Oz + has australian warranty
approx. $100 cheaper
cheaper spare spool
Cons: Only 3+1 bearings as opposed to 6+1
Not as sexy as the thunnus ci4
***They both have identical drag, line capacity and nearly identical weights.***
QUESTIONS:
Anyone have any experience on either of these?? Would having only 3 bearings affect the longevity of the reel?
Much appreciated!

I have the 8000D that i bought not too long ago, imho its nothing great, more bearings more weak link, less bearings slightly rougher but gets the job done, i am also thinking about the thunnus ci4 but then i saw the shimano albrid ci4 might get that one instead.

6 8000D's??!! livin the dream! what do you mainly use them for? i was thinking of getting a 12000 sized reel for the extra line capacity...as far as i'm aware the thunnus ci4's are only available in america and retail for $299 USD, approx $100USD more than the rrp for the baitrunner

i've got a couple of baitrunners . they aren't shite. what did you use it for ??
they're not going to take a season sambo fishing, but for freelining baits , they are excellent
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

good news!
I emailed shimano australia re: warranty on reels bought overseas and got this back:
"Any Shimano reels brought overseas do not carry warranty in Australia.
This is because the reels may differ and different countries/states
carry differing warranty periods. All our reels sold here are under
warranty for 10 years but you must provide a proof of purchase to claim
it.
The good news is we are releasing the Thunnus CI4 in 4, 6, 8,12 &
16,000's later in the year - around October/November."
i've just asked for the expected retail price so i'll keep you posted if i hear back.
