Stella 8000SW v 10000SW

If you could buy one of these reels for the same price, why would you choose the smaller reel, considering the 10000 is only 11g heavier,
but holds one and a half times equivalent line capacitiy.
Then we go into 8000SWPG, I imagine that is for jigging only ?

Slightly different retreive
Slightly different retreive ratios still, and shimano tends to like having reel sizes with just different spools on pretty much the same body. I dont know why, if the reels are the same, but one has a slightly smaller spool, why would you go for that?
In the SW stella range, they're all different retreive/gear ratios

I'd be using the 8000 for jigging & the 10000 for medium weight popping.

You talking the PG for
You talking the PG for jigging Daz ?
So the 10000 for bottom bouncing, trolling and flicking ? Surely it will work jigs if used as a slow retrieve .
Whereas the 8000PG is a pure jig reel, ?
So where does that leave the poor old 8000SW ?

Yeah sorry. The 8000PG for
Yeah sorry. The 8000PG for jigging, plus other types of fishing of course. It isn't limited to jigging only (just really suitable).
I don't even consider the 8000 a contender. It's a 10000 with a shallower spool.
I've used my 8000PG for trolling, livebaiting, jigging & popping.

OK, Lets write the 8000SW
OK, Lets write the 8000SW off, its gone.
The 10000SW holds 1and 1/2 times more line and is virtually the same weight as the 8000SWPG, but the PG has a higher gear ratio, which is more suited to jigging.
Can you not just wind the 10000SW slower ?
Apologies if i am sounding like a slow bowler

It doesn't really work like
It doesn't really work like that.
If you're jigging, get the 8000SW-PG. If you're casting get the 10000SW. Or if you want a jigging reel with the higher capacity pay the extra and get the SW10000PG from Japan.

You can, but it's like
You can, but it's like riding a bike up hill. You can use a higher gear but it's gonna be more painful/tiring in the long run. Or you can use a lower gear (SW-PG) and pedal more times with less effort.
*I'm sure Matt used this analogy before*

Sweet, penny has half
Sweet, penny has half dropped.
What i don't 100% get, is how much more effort does it take to retrieve a jig ( max 500g ) between the two reels, or is it dependant on the size of the fish you eventually hook.
I appreciate the difference with 2 speed overhead TLD's whilst reeling in big mackies.
But in that case it was low gear trolling all day, untill a beast hit the lure.
But 500g max, does it really make that much difference ?
Disclaimer : I have never jigged a full day*
I think therein lies my answer

Short answer, YES it does
Short answer, YES it does really make that much difference. You can get away with a low geared reel for casting if you need to but I would never go with a high speed reel for jigging.

Well, you're looking at a
Well, you're looking at a 30% different in line retreive speed, so if we assume the spool is the same size (ok, its not, but close), then faster reel will require 30% more force to wind a given weight jig.
I generally like pump and wind (use quick reel to wind in slack not under a lot of pressure so winding pressure doesnt matter) but for sambos i've found the 10000 just a little hard to wind in. Want to get a 8000PG for next season.

Pretty sure you wouldn't
Pretty sure you wouldn't want a HG bottom bouncer??
HG reels will also screw with your jigging action, you kind of want to match a handle rev with a rod stroke, and they are just stubby rods =)

Don't worry one you buy one,
Don't worry one you buy one, you'll find you have strange urges to buy more... before you know it you'll end up buying both an 8000sw-pg & 10000sw anyway

if you're that concerned,
if you're that concerned, get the 8000, sell the spool and buy a 10000 spool. Then you get the ratio you want with the line capacity of the bigger reel.
