Reel to use with a Nitro Innovator Surf Assassin?
Submitted by till on Sun, 2008-04-20 19:48
Hiyas,
I picked up one of these recently, and am using it with a BG90, but it seems a bit heavy and a bit clunky for it. Are there any 5000 or 6000 reels that have taper spools for surf casting? I think there is a JDM one called the PA Prosurf or Spin Joy with some nice features, but don't know much about it.
Any other suggestions?

well you wont find those
well you wont find those here but the Emblem Pro 5500 is a great reel to suit or there's Shimano's Long Cast Baitrunner. Awesome powerful reel with tapered spool and baitrunner feature.
We got both in store...check it out.

The Big Baitrunner is way to
The Big Baitrunner is way to big for the Surf Assassin, I was using a Saltiga Blast 4500 on mine then switched to a Stella 6000, both reels balance well on it and it cast great with either.
If you had the 13ft Messiah I would suggest the Emblem or Big BTR, like I use on mine.
Cheers, Al.

Have a look at the new Stradics
They are a good price and the 6000 fi would balance up nicely with that rod.

The new Stradic does look ok
The new Stradic does look ok and Im not sure the older, more expensive Sustain really has much on the Stradic currently either.

Just poking around on the
Just poking around on the Shimano site it gives the weirdest line capacity for the stradic 5000 v's 6000.
Model Retrieve Capacity Drag weight
5000FI 37" 12/195 25lb 14.1oz
6000FI 42" 12/165 29lb 21.0oz
So you save 7oz going back to a 5000, you lose 5" on your retrieve rate, 4lb on the drag, and you pick up an extra 30yds of 12lb line. I think that would put the combo under 1kg. Is this a really stupid idea and I just haven't noticed?Id probably put braid on it anyway, so capacity isnt a bit deal.
Call me a wuss but my shoulders could really feel the BG90 + Nitro innovator after tossing lures for an hour and a half v's my 9' baitcaster with a curado. The casts were barely better, but the wind wasnt quite helping and I had mono on as well.

The Stradic 5000 and 6000
The Stradic 5000 and 6000 are two different size reels physically. So expect the 5000 to be considerably lighter. The 5000 is actually the deep spool version of the 4000. We've got both instore so do drop by again when you have time and see what you think.

Yeah I figured the size drop
Yeah I figured the size drop was pretty big, the 6 and 8000 are very close, but its a big drop in size to the 5000. I need to get down there to look at some polarised sunnies as well.
Ill have to drop in without that brother of mine, he is too scared to come in in case he spends some cash, but we're usually only in Freo together, to go fishing.
