Pelagic / Gamefishing - a few questions for you

Gday all - Im gearing up for Coral Bay and the soon to  come metro    pelagic season. Im a reef basher mostly but gonna give trolling more of a go this summer out at the trench for Marlin and tuna so looking for some advice. Went out end of last summer twice, got plenty of Mahi Mahi at the FADs but nothing on the big pushers we really didnt know what we were doing though

My three large overhead reels have got 80 and 100 pound braid on them and Ive put 200 pound richter wind on leaders on the braid on 24 and 37 kg rods. I thought i heard or read somewhere mono only is best for heavy gamefishing cos of the stretch - can I leave them with braid on or should I change them all to mono

Next question - My brothers carrying on that all bib lures like rapala X-raps, magnums ets  should have the trebles removed and replaced with a single hook for better hook-up rates I figure if thats better they would already come with single hooks on them what do other guys do do you change them

When trolling and you get a strike is it best to gun the motor to set the hook I read just keep going at same speed so if there are tuna around you have a good chance of multiple hookups

Drag settings - how hard do you set the drag while trolling before a strike - I figure not very hard at first to avoid pulling the hook.

Cheers guys

Hey mate

I would also have a read of 'Between the Lines' the Pakula book - has the answers to your questions about what to do when you get a strike (gun it for a bit to let the hooked fish fall back in the spread and help set the hook).

On singles vs trebles - i reckon you will hook up more often on the trebles, but stay hooked up more often once you are hooked on the singles- if that makes sense.

Once you pin them on a single they are generally not getting off no matter what. But I've missed strikes on singles that I reckon I would have nailed on trebles.

When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:

n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or

n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

Hey mate, mono is by far best

Hey mate,

mono is by far best for bill fish, has lots of stretch to help keep your hook set and also applies heaps of drag in the water to put more hurt on the fish. Min for big pushers 12inc ect is 24kg and can be handled in a stand up outfit. can move up to 37kg if your feeling strong and have the line capacity. run 1/3 drag at strike ie 24kg set to 8kg drag. when fighting a fish in close and its behaiving you can tweak it up. As for gunning the boat on hook up it is not so nessesarry when running heavy tackle but will help you get the fish out the back clear of your gear and if the fish decides to run with the boat you are all ready under power. more importantly having sharp good quality hooks with barbs filed off that suit your line class makes the differance getting a good hook up. your a bit stuck if your running deep divers with the same outfits as you would want your braid on the reels for chasing more wahoo and mackies.

Run singles on most of my lures (for tuna and kings) - rarley drop any and haven't notice anything different re hookups (keep em sharp), don't do any marlin fishing myself but I wouldn't impage trebles are strong enough for them.

As Lame suggests, file the barbs off or crush them flat.

Nothing worse than trying to get hooks out of a thrashing fish for a quick release and finding you are connected to it as well. There has been some lovely pics over time that will make you think twice about using barbed hooks / trebles

Come down to the PGFC and say gidday , great bunch of guys and endless amounts of knowledge. My partner and i joined June last year and managed to hook four big blues last summer but unfortunately didn't get them to the boat. I have learnt so much from a number of guys in the club over the past twelve months and cannot wait for this summer.
