Submitted by brg on Sat, 2010-01-23 08:16
thinking of buying one of these for rock fishing matching it to one of these new grapite rods/xzoga /daiwa sensor around 10foot and i would like to match it to a 5000 size saragosa would that do the trick for salmon etc or should i spend the extra money and get a stradic .Would like to keep the costs down as much as possible but only like buying once.cheers

saragosa is a pimped up spheros.

Ive got a stradic that 4yrs old and its still going strong! one of the best fishing purchases i have made, packs a mass load of braid and the new ones look real nice too. Got to admit im a bit of a shimano fan...

I like stradics..
Have 3 of em in different sizes and find em very good. They would be even better with a waterproof drag though. I did have a handle flog out on the 8000 but dropped a stella main gear and handle in it and prob solved. Mind you it was getting worked on big poppers and gts to 60lb with 50lb braid

What are you talking
What are you talking about???
The Saragosa is the more expensive reel and will outlast the Stradic but then that depends on how you use it and maintenance.
The Stradic on the other hand is the better value reel because it comes with a spare spool.

i have a saragosa and a stradic and love em
certainly not a pimped spheros
If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Shimano
I have a stradic and it is a great reel that isn't expensive.
Look at a baitrunner 4500 or 6500, i have both also and i have had the 4500 for 15 years and it is as good as the day i bought it.

yeh but for what he's gonna
yeh but for what he's gonna be using it for. The BTR4500 is slow and very not so ergonomic handle. 6500 is definately too big for the rods he's wanting.
They're great reels and will always have its place in history.
The Saragosa is a fair bit different under the skin to the Spheros. Yes its pimped out with a little more drag and machined cut handle and Septon knob. Internally it boasts an extra bearing and uses a stronger material for the main gear.

If it was me
and it looks like you are a fan of Shimano, I'd go a twinpower 5000 or 6000. But that may be outside of your budget at ~$450?
For me, you are buying a nice rod, so I'd be inclined to put a nice reel on it to match.

Stradic
I have 2 Stradic 8000 loaded with 30lb braid (300mtrs). Matched to a Ozflex 9ft graphite spin rod. Have use them at Quobba on Mackies/Tuna & Cobia. Also Busselton/Dunsborough on Salmon. Great to have spare spool especially when you get spooled (Quobba). Only have to change spool and not respool so no fishing time lost.
