Axle Buddie

Question,

I just towed my boat 240kms and 1 wheel lost 3 axle buddies throughout the trip.

The bearings are new and I didnt over fill the buddies with grease but this wheel kept on throwing them off.

I have been told to put loctite on it or change out the bearing but as I have told them that its a new bearing and is in good nick .

Has anybody else had the same problem and if so what was the answer ?

Cheers ,

Craigo

one way to fit them in place

Sun, 2010-01-24 13:14

one way to fit them in place is to use the tow ball,  grab a lump of wood and place the buddy over the tow ball and hit it with the lump of wood so you dont dammage the buddie. remember to only do it a little bit at a time  so you dont overbend them. that way i have found the best and holds on tight. i had the same prob

I had the same issue, when the hub got hot they came off. I cleaned the lip and the hub where the buddy seats with petrol and then lock tight them in with and gave it a good bash with a lump of timber so it was seated properly. No problems now.

loose hubs

if your installing the bearing hubs on a wheel and it keeps coming of, it must be a loose fit in the wheel hub , i generally would get a chisel or centre punch and make several indents around the inside edge of the wheel hub to create nore contact surface on the bearing hub , then as per Russ aid use a hammer or mallet with a peice of wood abd ensure the hub is being installed square as well

I wouldnt bother with them

I wouldnt bother with them at all, if you do your bearings correctly in the first place you dont need them. rodrat lost one and nearly lost a second one in the same week earlier this year in exie, the problem with bearing buddy's is they create a false sense of security a lot of people think cos they have them they dont need to check their bearings but they do, if they'r checked and regreased every spring and then again if your doing a big trip normal caps work fine.

Most sensible do maintain

Tue, 2010-01-26 15:31

Most sensible do maintain the boats and trailers and I lke to think that Im one of those people .

At the end of the month I spent a day doing this .

I have just got home from pulling the bearing apart and she is fine as thay are new ones .

On my last boat I didnt have bearing buddies and was always going through bearings.

With this new boat which is only 2 years old I have only changed out the bearings once ( due to the longer trip and once they where off they where still in good nick)

But fishy fingers you say that I dont need them and too only put a cap back on it. Why would the cap stay on instead of the bearing buddies???

I had spare caps on me and from what I can see the go into the same hole.

Feed back would be good from you ,

Cheers Craigo

You have a point

You do have a point...but I have seen lots of trailers with missing bearing buddy's (I know they are missing cos the ones left on are buddy's) maybe the caps being thinner matterial mold better to the hole when they go in I dont know, maybe people fill them too much with grease and not allow for expansion at the end of the day normal caps are a lot cheaper you can probably get a set of 4 for the price of a single bearing buddy IF you can buy them seperatley and you dont need a grease gun if you have to refit them.

On my last boat I didnt have bearing buddies and was always going through bearings.

Which brings me to my point of doing them right in the first place, on average I replace my bearings every 2 or 3 years whether they need it or not espescialy if you do long trips.

As I said I think some but not all think they are the be all and end all of bearing maintainance.

Yep I agree  pain in the arse if something gets stuck but realy a bearing should take about 30 mins to do including jacking up but probably an hour if the break calliper needs to come of as in mine.

Not Much

Tue, 2010-01-26 18:15

They are a larger than normal sized cap wit a moveable plate on a spring, when the grease gets hot the plate allows it to expand without forcing it out of the seal when it cools down the plate moves back to keep the grease in the bearing...they do work i dont argue with that.

buddies

as fishy fingers said, i lost one last year in exy. Bought a new one and it kept falling off. i tryed the bending and hammering on but still fell off. I just use caps now and replace the bearings once a year.
