garmin gpsmap 750s problems

g'day all thanks for the ongoing enjoyment from the forum and invaluable info.

unfortunately my first post is regaurding problems with my chartplotter.

ive had the garmin gpsmap 750s fishfinder/gps combo since march and been a little disappointed frankly. nearly 2 weeks ago the gps froze and has not moved off that screen since. it has froze before but always been able to turn off/on and comes good. the fishfinder/sonar is still working fine and touch screen is as good as it was but just the chartplotter/gps componant is still frozen.

any info on similar past probs would be greatly appreciated, my guess is the internal antenna is stuffed?? as you can imagine its a little difficult to get technical support this time of year. anyone out there a garmin rep??

cheers.

monc

I'm no expert mate but have you tried backing up your waypoints and then doing a factory re-set? I had to do that with a navman and it worked for me....

Garmin

Same happened to mine....Garmin will tell you to pack up the whole unit and ship it off to Sydney to a shed in FKWhere, after which they'll take 3 months to tell you your unit is trashed and you'll have to buy a whole new head unit or they can try to fix for around $2k...oh...and you'll be lucky to get them to answer the phone at any time...call them to see what they say but in the end you'd be better of buying Lowrance or Raymarine.

Garmin gear is ok.....they fail on backup and support miserably.

Merry Xmas!!!!!

 thanks vinesh

will install asap and hope for the best.

just on the subject is it normal for these devices (other brands included) to freeze? mine might freeze once a trip. and having mine installed on centre console it gets direct sunlight and occasionally shuts off - im guessing from heat?

cheers guys.

Sorry to be a miserable old

Sorry to be a miserable old prick Monc but from my own experience I refuse to have any Garmin gear on my boat. The products are pretty good but there help is garbage.

 In 2 years i had

  • Power connector broken at back of unit...ship it off...3 months..no feedback...they wanted $900...told them to GF and we haggled down.
  • Frozen unit...3 months...they actually LOST the whole unit with 2000 GPS marks and couldn't find it....had to threaten them with all sorts of comebacks so they finally folded and sent a new unit.

Had a couple of small probs as well.

New boat...nothing but Furuno now.

  Good luck mate

 cheers wazogood to be aware

 cheers wazo

good to be aware of negative feedback. definitely sounds like their tech support is sub standard and thats just rubbish loosing the unit.

so there is no local tech support? im pretty sure it will be warranty if needed to send away but its the time and hassle.

fingers crossed.

Just a long shot

Have you removed the chart card and tried to run it without.

Maybe something to do with the processor being faulty.

Like I say, just a long shot.

Cheers,

Jeff

Faulty gear.

Simrads nss series is notorious for freeze ups and other issues, difference being that navico does make an effort to help, garmin back up is dreadfull, normally they wont speak to you, they ask you to leave a message and they will get back to you but don't . There is a solution and its called consumer affairs, make the effort to contact garmin document day time etc then when not happy with their predictable un acceptable response file a claim with consumer affairs perth, garmin don't give a shit re me or you or consumers in general but as soon as consumer affairs steps in then you will get some action, garmin consumer support is ignore them and they will go away.
