Flares

I was told not so long ago that my flares did not have to be replaced because they had exceeded the expiry date.

It makes sense to do so, but would I be liable for a fine if I only had the expired ones?

No, on a rec boat you only need to have flares that look like they're in good order.

Flares

Steve,

keep your new flares in a sealed container (buy one from a boating or fishing store or make one from PVC pipe with screw on ends) and keep them out of the sun (but accessible obviously - no point in having flares if your boat sinks before you can use them) and you can legally keep them way past their expiry date.

Drop them off at any sea rescue base. They use them for flare demonstrations etc.

Sadly the sea rescue groups don't always take old flares anymore.

Yeah have to be sealed and in good order unless your a registered fishing vessel or charter boat.

From my experience your flares must be in date. Quite a few years ago I asked in person at the freo DPI office about the flare date issue. They said as long as they are in good condition ok. Within 2 weeks I was checked on the water and given a written warning for out of date flares....Since then I keep the old flares as spares and buy new ones when the date requires.

Never been checked in the 8 years since then, for safety gear or fish.....

Your local sea rescue group would most likely be very happy to take old flares
