A different kind of deckie.;

Everyone

Since the purchase of the black pearl, and my introduction into fishing offshore by myself, i just cant crack this demersal stuff. 1.5 years gone on and i still havent boated a legal dhue or pink. I dont understand sounders at all, every article i read, i try and highlight important sections, and change the setting hundreds and hundreds of times on my lowrance and nothing helps at all.  Trolling offshore is something Ie cracked pretty well, with last summer yeilding YFT,longtails, dollies, maks , SBT, stripeys, sharkies and so on. In fact even opened up the account for the 2013 metro mack season on the weekend :P

So what im offering is a free trip out (you supply your food and drinks only), fuel paid for but i would like the following:

- experience in understanding/tuning  and reading sounders and the want to teach

- experience in jigging - to be honest im going to prefer the trip to be no bait, but we can bring bait if required.

- experience in fishing for offshore demersals

-Experience and patience in sounding (none of my regular deckies have this)

Im not after your secret spots, or your best dhuie hole, in fact im not asking you to bring any GPS co ords. To be honest all im asking if some one to come out teach me a thing or two regarding the subjects above, possibly find some nice ground and maybe just maybe a fish or two (and maybe a carton if this happens haha).

This isnt about first in first served regarding PM's. It will be on the next available day i have to fish (most likely weekends) and generally i fish from woodies, or ocean reef. (i will change locations if required)

Look forward to hearing from anyone regarding a lending hand.

thanks all

I am not a fan of the HDS for sounders (good GPS) but it will be more than adequate to find fish as long as the tranny is set up OK. Gotta get depth and more importantly angle correct. PM me if ya want some tips.

This weekend looking very shakey, not sure what size boat you have but the secret with jigging it to have a slow drifts so you can pinpoint your jigs on top of fish, we catch very little when the wind is over 10 knots to be honest......

I think your aim is correct, get a good guy out with you to show you the ropes with your sounder and jigs, but be patient.....we went out to our favourite few dhu spots last week and it was REALLY tough going with very few hits after many hours jigging, so if you have no ground, it can take months!! I think my first dhu took a year of trying, but now they come regularly.

Lowrance

http://fishwrecked.com/forum/hds-5
Check out this thread if you have your sounder set up like this and your transducer in the correct position as the installation explains a lowrance is more than adequate sounder, I love mine
I use bottom lock also
If you troll your lures around our coast in the 35-45 m mark nor or sor you will be going over ground. Most days I will fish up to ten spots to get my fish

I didnt know the Lowrances

Fri, 2013-01-11 20:53

I didnt know the Lowrances had bottom lock? Ive got an older one predecessor of HDS and cant find it.

I use bottom lock on my Furuno almost all the time up north Coral Bay and split screen down at the Abrolhos etc.

The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.

Everyone's just winging it.

Last time I used it, it was more of a bottom zoom than a bottom lock ala Furuno and Raymarine.

On my older pre hds unit , you could set upper and lower depths which was necessary to get a good bottom reading as per the furuno shift func.

If I spent half as long fishing , as I do reading this bloody forum , I'd be twice the fisherman I am.

Yeah, interesting, but not

Sat, 2013-01-12 09:30

Yeah, interesting, but not quite the same as the Furuno bottom lock, ie; the bottom flat and the distance up to fish shown.

Happy to lend a hand with sounding & fishing... jigging, plastics, trolling... what ever you're interested in.

I'm trying to get as much fishing done in Perth as I'm moving on soon.

Same boat

Fri, 2013-01-11 20:28

Hi Terboz, I was new to boating 2years ago, struggled for a while. Head up to TwoRocks mate, so much ground out there in the 40's and less. A lot easier than ocean reef, not sure about woodies.

Hds

Sat, 2013-01-12 14:56

The hds definately has it rob.  You run a split screen and adjust your parameters on the bottom lock side and you won't miss a thing.
