Deep sea squid
Submitted by joe m on Mon, 2013-04-08 21:20
So I have seen numerous documentaries on these massive squid pulled from the depths. Mainly from Mexico and around numerous parts of the americas. Was wondering if anyone has tried this off Wa and how you went? I'm not referring to giant squid but they do look a solid 10kg plus. Just curious as it is a big ocean and there are a lot of strange creatures amongst the depths

Wrong part of the world...
...for that sort of squid. They are Humboldt squid, named after the cold water Humboldt Current, which runs northwards along the west coast of South America. Our warm water Leeuwin Current simply doesn't support these type of creatures and the food they rely on...

not entirely true
While longlining for tuna and swordies over 6 or 7 years 97-04, we often pulled just tubes half digested from swordies around a meter long. There seemed to be alot in 98-99 and other years much less but there none the less.
We also saw ALOT of sucker marks on swordies up to small cup size, and no not cookie cutter scars but regular patterns on the side of big swordies.
Only once can I recall seeing a live exceptionally big squid, ironically about 20 miles outside the Abrolhos in the early days and that was maybe a meter and a bit all up.
Give a man a mask, and he'll show you his true face...
The older you get the more you realize that no one has a f++king clue what they're doing.
Everyone's just winging it.

I think you are talking about Humbolt Squid. Yes they are big but i don't think they are found in Australian waters.
Mind you we get some huge Cuttle fish here, Ive got some around 5 to 7 kg and seen bigger pictures of them .

They have several giant squid jigs that are used to catch the Humbolt squid listed on the website. The prices arn't too bad either.

My bro....
Did several trips from Esperance to Albany on a longliner and caught massive squid on jigs at night, up around 1m long in the mantle. They looked like this thing caught up Leeman way
http://www.squidfish.net/forums/index.php?/topic/2238-massive-15kg-squid-caught-in-wa/
also caught Blue Marlin up to mega sizes, Spearies, lots of these things http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opah which apparently go like the clappers, believe it or not.
and of course the target species Southern Bluefin Tuna.
Not very friendly ocean down that way though....
