Braid and backing?

Hi,

I have a Saltist 30TH, and I was going to respool it with 50lb. Is there really any need to put on more mono backing than enough to cover the spindle? I have oodles of braid, so its not like I need to top off the reel or anything.

Ta,

till

Yeah use insulation tape, I only use backing if I can't fit a full spool of braid onto the reel.

tape gives the braid

tape gives the braid something to bite and you just fill the spool completely with braid

As said, you only need a few wraps of mono just to stop the braid slipping on the spool (the more the merrier to be sure :p). Make sure you have a bit of tension so it grabs a bit better. I hate electrical tape, mainly because if you ever want to remove it you have to break out the isopropyl or similar.

Some other points to consider: Filling with a bit more backing can let you know when you've got x amount of line left. Underfilling the spool makes it a little harder to thumb on the narrow reels.
Also, not filling the spool changes the retreive rate, torque and drag characterstics. Basically it acts like a gear so changing the amount of line can affect it.

Its up to you if you want to bother of course.

lecky tape pulls straight

lecky tape pulls straight off mate, never had a problem even for stuff years old exposed to the pilbara elements. And as a guide, when you can see bright red tape starting to show between your line you know you have got stuff all left. Would prefer to spool my reel up with one piece of line (braid) rather than have another knot and some mono backing

Perhaps your just using better quality tape than i'm used to Brad :p

If you've only got a couple of meters (if that of mono backing), then its not really going to matter if theres a knot there or not. Depends how much you put on I guess.

Insulation tape and fill it

Insulation tape and fill it with braid, no knots and fishing with confidence.

Tape wont hurt your spool at all, been doing it for years without any trouble at all.

Saltist 30

I have a Saltist 30T and have 150m of 15kg mono and 300m of 50lb braid , even jigging out on the Derwent and hooking big AJ's and Sambos etc I have never seen the backing , 11 kg's of drag slows big fish down fast, if you don't know how to turn a big fish you should learn, I have got 50kg Sambos to the boat in under 10 mins with my little Saltist jigged up in 120m of water.

More than 300yds of 50lb on a 30TH? Oh so ther eis definately plenty of line on it then =)

There has been one noted failure to turn a big dolphinfish on 3kg of drag but I'm sure I can be a bit more persuasive on 50lb and am always looking for an opportunity to find out!
