Boat Market

Gents,

Anyone sold or bought a boat recently and how did they go bargaining ?.....starting to look around for something between 6 -7m mark, used and there's not a lot around.

I know the car market has gone through the roof as we seen a few grand in price change over a 3 month period late last year...some yards struggling to find cars as they were selling so fast.

Not a buyers market at a guess..

I've just agreed to sell my '17 Reef Runner... I didn't advertise it and the guys is willing to wait until the end of Feb to collect. No bargaining.

Prices are up 15-20% as they are with Caravans also but boat build time for a new Caribbean for example are out 9-10months now.

Mon, 2021-01-04 16:35

Sold my Cruisecraft in about a week, asking price which was about $10K more than I would have sold it for last year.

Plus it went to Queensland, they paid about $6K freight plus another $5K to a broker to simply take the money and give it to me.

Three people from Queensland all keen, one got a little upset when after asking for my "lowest price", he offered $5k less.

Meantime someone else came along and took it. He rang 12 hours later asking about his offer and said "but I was bargaining first and I would have paid more"

Usually when they ask "whats the lowest you'd take", I ask "whats the highest you'll pay?"

In this case I told him, specifically saying "thats not the point to start bargaining at", he wanted to know so he could "do his figures".

Shortage

Mon, 2021-01-04 17:07

I am finding there is a shortage of new boats, that is what is driving the used price up.

Once manufactueres catch up the s/hand market will drop like a stone.

Mate has a big w/sale fixed price yard, he is staring to offer much lower trade in prices as he is seeing demand drop.

Mon, 2021-01-04 18:57

Sold my Centre console just before Xmas for a fair price, lots of low ballers and prop spinners out there. Thing that made me laugh was that a lot of them think they know more about your boat than you do, but stood my ground and got what I wanted.

Guessing with international travel on hold....10k supa grab for those that want it has added to the spend.

Recon work and some of the bigger projects are behind it...few more to come yet, will be a labour shortage before we know it.

Drug money for a boat atm

Mon, 2021-01-04 20:00

I was in market just as prices and demand started to climb, missed so many as guys were buying sight unseen, one guy said hed had 180 phone calls in a cpl hours on gumtree.

Have to imagine alot were dealers filling their empty yards.

Was just about ready to chuck it in when i managed to find my 5.6 hydrofield.. now im in love again and more importantly back in the water.

It is crazy though, youd definitely think it cant last past this year?

Reminds me of daytrading shares during the dot com bull run at beginning of the 2000's lol.

Crazy times...

That's huge, and explains what is going on.

The prices being asked for what I consider non-classic cars has also become ridiculous - Im not sure if they're actually selling or not, but covid tax has really got Rockingham's finest thinking they're siting on a GTHO gold mine with their '89 5L VN Commodore! Might have to see what I can get for the old XT Falcon! Haha

Tue, 2021-01-05 14:46

Bought a boat in September 2020. Got it for about 10% below asking but I think it was about the right price in the end. since then I have seen very comparable boats at much more money or smaller (and sometimes older/higher hours) boats for the same price. Pretty sure right now I coukld sell at a profit but where's the fun in that!

People have been asking for and getting big $ for their Landcruisers with the impending phasing out of the 200 series in March. Covid tax is the common phrase for such high asking prices .

Sold mine a month ago

Wed, 2021-01-06 08:03

Decided to sell my fibreglass boat a month ago and it sold in a week.

Same price I paid for it 3 years ago.

Had plenty of lookers and a few yards keen on consignment.

Only sold because I was paying storage. I have no undercover parking for it at my place.

Looking for an Ali I can park out the front and not worry about it deteriating.

But as you said...not much about.

Been looking east, prices are better but transport evens it out.

I hate to be a party pooper -

Wed, 2021-01-06 08:47

I hate to be a party pooper - but i cant see how this can be sustained - this initial rush is the "thank fk i am not dead and i want to live my life so i am going to buy xyz", cars, boats, caravans all going up due to that, property going up because of repatriation of expats (scampering home for better health care) and people wanting to upgrade due to low interest rates.
At some point the music stops - always does - i would say it will be around June/July
2 outcomes from here -
1) virus gets worse, out of control, health care system fails globally and economy goes to shht = asset prices fall
2) vaccine solves issue, economy will improve but not at the rate people are predicting as if it does interest rates will go up (= defaults for many) if it doesnt improve then the current asset prices are over inflated

Personally i am not concerned about option 1- think it is a low risk, i dont think we are going to shht but i cant see how the current rate of growth can be sustained with wages growth and inflation flat - and remember a lot of businesses have automated processes during covid and a lot of people working from home = commercial property values are more likely to fall

rant over :-)

Hence the major push to get the vaccine out quickly. But people want their cake and eat it too, don't want the vax but want a good economy. We can stay with the status quo, not vaccinate and become stagnant with a groundhog day effect with clusters and lockdowns. The yanks really need to get their shit together soon with triage of who lives and dies type scenario playing out right now in LA. But morons still think it's all fake.

 Cartainly don't disagree

Wed, 2021-01-06 09:28

Cartainly don't disagree with you regarding cars, boats, caravans etc. Real estate might be different though as we genuinely have a shortage of accommodation at present. Yes I know that there has been a boom in new housing starts and more to come, but wiyh less than 1% rental vacancy, something needs to ease the pressure. I believe that provided we have the jobs, the negative net interstate migration we saw in the 5 years pre-COVID may well turn around. If it does then thos epeople need to be housed somewhere. Same goes for overseas migration when that recommences in say 2022. We were already attractive as a destination and now that isolation is sexy, we will be more attractive.

Just my thoughts on the housing side of things. I work in the development industry so have pretty good intel but also a reason to hope for this to be right. Time will tell!

Wed, 2021-01-06 10:12

i hope you are right re property - as falling house prices is what kills growth
IN the CBD there is shop after shop boarded up - i know thats not all c19 related but seems to be trending one way
The company i am contracting to is looking to downsize office size as during c19 we all worked from home - have worked out that we can take an office 1/3rd as big..

THe migration thing is a 2 way street, a lot of returned expats may stay but alot wont and younger people will move offshore when they can - a mate of mine returned hong kong last year and despite being very well set up after working there 20 years is looking to return this year or next due to the limited opportunities here...
we have a cork in the end of the pipe atm - once that is removed the rental vacancy rate will increase

Everything recreational is crazy.

Wed, 2021-01-06 11:40

And has been since before mid last year. People paying new price for used 4wds because there is a waiting list. Recently bought a new Triton 4wd dual cab for my son, because, at under 40K driveaway for an auto, it was the same price as most of the second-handers around. Just have to wait until March for delivery. A mate picked up a very nice 2300 Caribbean July of last year. The broker had lierally just listed it the day before, already had interested parties, hadn't even been detailed. He bought it on the spot.  Paid what would have been the new price 5 years ago, and only about 15K under what it would cost new today.  But a long wait for delivery.

Know that feeling, have had my boat for 10 years and I was offered the same as I paid for it last month. Should probably take the dough though I own it and it doesnt cost me much to keep it even if I dont use it as much as I would like. I am also a bit worried that once sold I wont get into another for a reasonable price
