Boat insurance question

 Hi all

Just about to get a new boat and have searched who people are recommending for insurance. I'm gonna get a few quotes including RAC. They asked what anti-theft device the boat has. It's a penned boat so hitch protection doesn't apply. How have others dealt with this question in the past?

TIA

You have actually made a false declaration potentially rendering the insurance null and void should the boat be stolen.

I USE QBE boat insurance which has had hassle free claims. My immobilisation is a tyre clamp bracket from whitworths , a  helmet hitch for th trailer tow hitch with a stainless steel padlock and a gps tracking device hidden on board. I also park my car in front of the paked boat trailer.  I ALSO FITTED A propeler lock nut from mercury marinet to prevent prop theft. I have A MOTION SENSOR alarm on the boat floor. Two external video security cameras are mounted on the wall of the house.  PLENTY OF DETERENTS so theft is not easy.

I just insured my 365 Sea Ray Sundancer thru Club Marine.

They were about $300.00 cheaper than RAC Insurance & no silly questions about "anti theft devices"

I'm currently with Club Marine and thought I'd do some requoting to make sure I'm getting the best deal

I saw the comment about Tident Insurance above, so started researching them.  Half the reviews are terrible....lot's of complaints about not paying out and if they do then refusing to reinsure.

Based on that, I'm going to give them a wide berth.

Also requested an online quote from RAC.  It doesn't let you submit it until you tick either GPS tracker or hitch lock.  I have my boat in a locked garage....I'm not going to put a hitch lock on too.  Club Marine don't demand that, so I may very well just end up back there.

Thanks for all the responses

Thanks for all the responses fellas.

I'm getting quotes from a few and will assess them all. So far RAC are $400/year more than Club Marine so we have a leader!

What are the thoughts on market value versus agreed value? I certainly lean towards agreed value.

+1 sgio

Had my old bot insured for years with them,  let it lapse for few years then re- insured it before a trip down south. 1 month later a crack head smashed into the boat in my front yard with her car. Sgio paid out what the agreed value ( what I paid 15 years ago for it!) No problems.

 SGIO only do phone quotes

Fri, 2020-10-09 13:41

SGIO only do phone quotes for penned boats so I'll give them a call when I get a chance. No harm in getting multiple quotes and then picking from there.

Appreciate all the feedback.

I spoke to Club Marine and they said you need a valuation each year and the insured value changes to that. I can't see that is much different to market value, or will market value be even lower by theri estimation? Hard to compare apples with apples so far!
