Bertram 28 - Good deep sea boat? Opinions

Looking at getting in to a Bertram 28, a lot of them have issues. Anyone with a heads up with regards to what to look for, costs to repair and whether it is a good deep sea boat. Not a rock n roller...

Pretty sure there are at least a couple berty forums around, you might find some specialised knowledge there? Sounds like a big and expensive project though, so good luck!

Not sure on the 28 but I do love the Bertram hull only ridden in a few & was very smooth but also love their look. Don't know enough to give any constructive advice & not into typing bullshit pretending I do.

Fished gamex on one a few
Fished gamex on one a few years ago, really nice hull, but I would think you could do better nowdays rather than putting yourself through the headache of rebuilding one. I know Luke at Chivers marine has had one as a project for the past couple of years, would be a good phone call to make.

i have the bertram 25
very good sea boat rides well and built good! hard to find somethin better! one thing to look at is finding one with either good motors or one that has a single motor as i found that way its cheaper to replace the one motor! there are alot of lemons out there that have been just sitting in marinas rotting with little or no use and they clean them up and want the big money for them! so be carefull what your buying and i would recommend getting it checked out for osmosis.

cheers guys, looked in to a couple in WA and they have been pigs.... rather worried about the whole inspection thing, $660 for mechanicals. $1500 for survey, if its a lemon its dead money been stung once last week...
If not a Berty 28 what else? Anyone with suggestions as to what is worthwhile and not a pit?

I've been on a mates BW30 and without having been on anything else in the same league to compare it with I thought it was a shit hot boat.

I have a Berty 25 and she is
I have a Berty 25 and she is built like a brick sh!t house, solid and rides the sea well.
Berty 28's where good boats and I'd love the extra 3 foot on mine, and with the wide beam they have you should have no problems.
Only issue has been with the older motors, I'd go for a big single inboard diesel and then you'd have a top rig.
As for survey and inspection. I spent $600 and got a full mechanical & hull inspection on mine before I got it. Money well spent, cause if it had been a dud I would have had a lot more than $600 in repairs etc than could have been covered up.
I like the older hulls as they are heavier and built thicker where it counts. but thats just my view

agrees with you he loves the Bertram, John from Portside had one (RIP John before they sold it) excellent boat, he's been 55klms out in Johns boat, if we had the money yes a good Bertie for us, with deisel inboard.

my dream boat is a Berty 35 with twin Yannmar diesels in it on shafts,
I love the dual station lay out and nice sized back deck, a classic design and needs nothing changed for me.
my Berty 25 is just too short for a perfect fishing boat, but how ever, here is what you can do with them if you got the time and a big shed!

would be a great game boat with the midmounted motor and game tower, nice big fighting space for stand up tackle.

wroked out to do my old tub up like that one with a new diesel donk, jackshaft and a leg would set me back $50k. As I have already put with the price of the tub close on $30k in it, it would still be worth while.
I just need a big shed and a half week job...lol. oh and lotto winnings

Berty 28
IMHO they are getting old & would want a really good survey. I never loved the rear deck (step down) in them - but you could have shaft drives which was a ++++. If you look at YachtSurvey in the US they did a survey on a US Berty 28 - which I think was made here under licence by International Marine AKA Carribbean. The 31 -32 - 35 that is an entirely different beast - wonderful. Used to go out in a 35 with twin 454 petrols - eyewatering fuel costs! but good. The guy that had that 35 previously had a 25 with the twin sterndrives - he said never again. A neighbour had the twin sterndrives in a 26 - he always had cooling problems and said never again to sterndrives in a pen.

Best part of a 28 is the shafts, worst part is the small flybridge. Only can have a couple of people up there, so hopless if you have a wife and two kids..
