Starting to get the hang of my sounder/jigging:)
Submitted by Just1morecast on Wed, 2010-12-22 18:05Hi everyone,
Had a later than usual start as my deckie could only meet me at the ramp at 7am. Ended up seeing JohnF as i was launching and he retrieving his boat with his son after pulling up there pots. I wanted to head out to the lump i found just before the closure when i jigged up 2 small dhuies.
Tried a few spots on the way for a few blackass and just undersize pinks. Got closer to the lump and started fishing again. Sounder fired up and so did the fishing.
I coudn't get away from the Dhuies they were hitting my jig from every angle whether on the drop or pulling up. I even had one take it as i was dropping it to the bottom for the first time. Also getting a few hits then leaving the jig still for a sec or two and then jigging it again and they were coming back to much it. Nothing of big size but none the less dhuies on jig. My deckie couldnt believe it and i think i didnt either. They were almost like a Tailor sesh with poppers just going nuts. I ended up with 5 today and my mate using bait managed 1. Nothing big just size fish and all were released.
Day went on and my mate couldnt get away from the blackbums he got 6 and they were all size with one going close to 45cm id say. He also managed a pb as he got a queenie of about 55cm, he had never caught one til today. I had one massive hit but ran like crazy im sure it was a sambo, I managed a great Harley on the jig and made my eyes light up when it surfaced he ended up at 51cm. Though just cooked it and its very mushy almost like a sambo thats had worms:(
Cant complain though with perfect weather lots of fish and finally starting to get success with jigging. I will start my collection on submarines/pirates jigs forsure!
Cheers

Today's fishing trip
Submitted by r.gates on Tue, 2010-12-21 20:49Checked out the ocean from the top of Whitehills this morning and was pleasantly surprised to see flat seas, so we finished packing the boat and hit the Dawesville ramp at 8am. Headed out to the 19 fathom bank and enjoyed a very flat trip out there.
We set up the sea anchor and drifted over a couple of marks I had...even with the anchor, the drift seems fairly steady. Had the sounder dialled in on manual to 6m and the other half of the screen on bottom lock....the images we were seeing reinforced the previous catches from the coords we had.
Plenty of bites and lost fish, due to a bit of inexperience but we managed to land a couple, much to our delight.
The final tally was:
1 gurnard (released)
3 undersize pinkies ranging from 30 - 35cm (released)
1 breaksea cod - 45cm, which we enjoyed tonight
1 flathead & 1 large sand whiting - these are on the menu tomorrow night!
If the undersize pinkies fight like they did, I can't wait to get into a sized one...boy, they were fun to catch.
Hope everyone else who ventured out today caught a feed.
Back at the ramp at 4.30pm and was greeting by the fisheries guys who came over for a chat and a look in the icebox...showed them my licence and skipper's ticket and off we went. Good to see them out there....they're only doing their job.
Turns out we got upstaged by my son and his mate fishing from our 4m runabout off Leeman.....their tally was 1 jewie, 2 pinkies and 1 baldie!!!
regards

Upper swan river - south guildford
Submitted by lunker on Sun, 2010-12-19 23:19Went for a fish this evening, thought the tide/moon combo was looking pretty good. Hooked and lost several tailor through bite-offs right on the sand, which was a bit of a surprise. Got about half a dozen small bream to just-under legal, however the strange thing was each cast was getting nailed almost straight away by a mystery fish which was sitting on the bait and letting go about halfway in to shore. Yep, blue-manna crabs. Literally every cast! Managed to get several close in and one up onto the shore. I've never had this problem before so far upstream - they were literally in plague proportions. Anybody else had this problem?
No sign of a mulla yet though :(

Steep Point trip Nov 2010
Submitted by fords_rule85 on Wed, 2010-12-15 20:31Hey guys, just thought i would post up some pics from a recent trip to Steep Point in November. The fishing started out a bit slow due to the howling winds for the first couple of days but after that the weather was pretty good for the rest of the week and the fishing was the same.
We got these mackies on our first fish of the trip in the first 200m of trolling, the double hookup made it very interesting. Talk about a good start!! They went approx 10kg each
Just one of several night fishing trips that paid off big time, pinkies and spangoes being the main catch.
A couple of beauties caught on an afternoon session
We also picked up a fair few small tuna that worked like dynamite as bait!
This Yellow Fin Tuna was caught trolling the west side of the point on one of the calmest days ive ever seen up there, it pulled the scales down to 12kg
And a beautiful arvo in the bay
Cant wait for the next trip, cheers for checking it out.

Canning River fun
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Mon, 2010-12-13 14:35Asked my bro if he wanted to go for a flick around the Canning on Saturday, he moved over from Adelaide a couple of months ago and I was keen to get him out and into the flattie season. As well as that a mate of mine recently sent me some new HRT Lures to get wet so there was another thing pushing me to get out again.
We ended up fishing between the Mt Henry and Canning bridges from 10-2pm and picked up about 12-15 flathead between us in that time. Most of them were caught around what I'm guessing was the turn of the tide at about 1pm.
Most of the sizes were around the 35cm mark but we got onto a couple of larger ones, I got one at 42cm and one at 46cm, Jay got one around 45cm but it spat the hooks at his feet which was great to see...
A couple of pics from the session below:

White Hills report
Submitted by Jas04 on Mon, 2010-12-13 08:52Hey Guys
Just thought i would right up a quick report of the white hills trip!
Started off really well we got there around 3pm and within about 20min started catching tailor the earliest i have ever caught them in perth but we managed around 8-9 between us the biggest 3 made there way to the frying pan the biggest was 47cm the smallest was 35 but the rest went back to fight anothere day. there where also plenty of whiting and herring around.
On the big rods it was really quiet untill i threw a live herring and whithin minutes that took off but i was never going to turn it and eventually it snapped me off, i called it for a massive stingray so did not bother me too much, after dark it completely died off we did manage two small school sharks but then nothing we fished to about 3am not even a bite. so we got some sleep tried early morn nothing not even herring or whiting so we packed up and left around 10am
quick report fishing was really good but still in search of that mulla thinking of trying s-bend this weekend

Geraldton Fishing
Submitted by wrighty on Mon, 2010-12-13 08:23Thought I'd start a post for Geraldton area as there doesn't appear to be much written up here.Plenty of herring around Pages beach of late.Looking forward to end of ban to chase some Demersals, will be taking a few live herring out to start with and see what else we can pick up, (maybe some Mackies).Anyone been picking them up yet.
Does anyone up here do much late arvo/night fishing in the boat i.e. anchoring up and burleying. If so what techniques do you employ and what results do you have.
Also does anyone have any luck chasing LARGE whiting in deeper water out of Geraldton.

Fishing trumps sleep!
Submitted by shifeng on Sat, 2010-12-11 09:45Got home at about 2am this morning after work and did some website stuffs that is way overdue and had an hour of Assassin's Creed Brotherhood. Was deciding between fishing or just going to bed and wetting a line trumped. (Hence this post!)
So got changed and picked up my bucket and onto my car. Reached my spot in the river at about 5am and rigged up my trusty Rapala Xrap. There wasn't any action on the first three casts so I cast at a different spot and on that cast, after retrieving a lil, my drag went off a bit. That fish fought quite a bit and I managed to land it. PB skippy! measured up to slightly over 34cm. Yea.. nothing compared to the big guys with the boats but I was fishing the river. haha! Not much more action after except for a small tailor which was released. The bait fish were all around and they were jumping off the water but no takers to my lure. Had a couple of small sambos chasing my xrap but didn't take the lure. Oh well.
My wrist was starting to ache a bit cos of my injury so decided to pack up and go.
I saw a couple of guys fishing when I was about to leave. The kid wading into the shallows seem to have a cast on his left arm. Was that you aussiebreamer?

Sambo Update This week
Submitted by saltwater charters on Fri, 2010-12-10 21:52Hi Guys, Have been out nearly everyday this week except Thursday and not looking good for jigs at the moment. You get a triple hookup on first drop then maybe 1 next, then nothing. Sharks have moved in on inner barges straight up. Got my first one [shark] tied up to back of boat from the boys from Malaysia. Good effort, took 40 min and 6 guys.Easy 8 foot and 200kg. Let him go, couldn't do it.Crayfish going well with 30 in 3 days, biggest one 2.2kg and heaps of biggies. Caught a whiting and a wrasse today and after 3 hours of jigging put them down as we forgot about them and instant hookup[ double]while people jigging. And we got them up and let go.That spot a secret! So hopefully with the full moon the Sambos get thicker and spread out to the smaller spots and away from sharks. The both Barges are absolutely no go to sharks so if you want to catch a shark not a sambo go there. I will not be going to the barges, Hillarys Patch again unless to target sharks .Just thought i would pass on.Craig

awsome river sessions
Submitted by aussie_breamer on Thu, 2010-12-09 19:06
went down to the river on tuesday to fick some lures with some of my mates. was a awsome session with bait schools every where and preditory fish smashing them everywhere.
throughout the afternoon, we had a good time catching flathead after flathead on the flats. we ended up with 18 flatties. all caught on prawn stars, bevy vibes or minnows. we also caught lots of tailor and big herring, fishing the bait schools and 3 squid and some nice bream on the flats.
I went back down that night at 9:30, and started to flick out a Smith Luna sinking minnow, and first cast hooked into a nice bream, next cast again, another bream. stayed down there only for 45 minutes and every cast on the flats with the Smith Luna was either a nice hook up or a couple of good hits by either a bream or a tailor. ended up with 13 bream and many tailor in the 45 minutes that i was down there.
next morning, I headed down there again with one of my mates at 4:30. started flicking arround the Smith Luna on the flats and was rewarded untill untill the sun came up with bream and tailor again. once the sun came up, we headed over to another location to target some flatties, I got 3 flathead and another bream and my mate got a nice squid. we then headed back to our first place and started fishing the bait balls in the deeper water, caught lots of tailor and herring, I then let my 10g twisty sink to thte bottom and then did a pretty fast retrieve back, it got hammered by somthing, i initially thought it was another herring or tailor because it was just swimming towards me, but it was staying deep, when it reached my feet, at the jetty, it was still deep and i couldn't see what it was, but it then realised that it was hooked and took of strait out towards the pylons, it took line off me as if it was nothing!!!. it eventually busted me off in the pylons.
would any one have a idea what it was????
thinking it was a sambo??
it didn't fight like a big skippy, but could have been a huge bream.
sorry, i have photos, but they are all sh!t quality.
all fish were released succesfully.
cheers, tom

river session
Submitted by aussie_breamer on Sun, 2010-12-05 17:34
Went for a quick flick today down at the river.
was very hard to fish as i have a broken arm in a full arm plaster!!!
started off slow, hooked a massive flathead on my squid jig!!! which threw the hooks at my feet. decided to chase some bream, got two in the first couple of casts, one on a rmg scorpion in the jelly prawn colour and the other on a bevy vibe, both around the 30cm mark.
baitfish were getting smashed everywhere, and spent a while catching tailor and herring one after another.
I then jagged a couple of bait fish and put them down live, first one got absolutely hammered was taking copious amounts of line (was difficult to fight because of my arm) and just wouldn’t stop before it did me in the pylons.
then put down the other one and fed it to the fish for a while, I then set the hooks and it went on a screaming run. I eventually turned its head, and got it to the surface and went to lift it up onto the jetty and my line bloody snapped!!! estimated to be around the 45-48cm range.
had enough of being obliterated by the big bream so we headed over to the flats to target some flatties. ended up catching a couple of flatties and i even hooked another one on my squid jig again!!!
forgot I had my camera so unfortunately got no photos.
still trying to download those photos of the 40+ cm bream i got a couple of weeks ago.
cheers,
tom

Flying Marlin and Tuna! Quepos Costa Rica December 1
Submitted by SailFishQuepos on Thu, 2010-12-02 11:11December 1

Had a great time fishing today, fishing has been hot. We went out today and found multiple schools of Spinner Dolphin with Tuna. Since we filled up on Tuna the day before with the same guys, we were going from school to school looking for the big one on live bait. As we were travelling between schools, we threw out the Marlin gear as those have been around as well. Well it paid off as we hooked up with this nice Striped Marlin! It put up a pretty good fight, as they always do, and we finished the day with some good Tuna and the Marlin. Fishing has been really good here lately, in the past 10 trips we have caught 4 Marlin (3 striped and a blue), 150 YF Tuna (not a misprint) , 30 Amberjacks, and some sailfish and dorado as well. Really looking forward to December as the numbers should keep getting better! Check out the awesome pictures!

PB Murray Bream
Submitted by buschy on Wed, 2010-12-01 16:06Went to my regular spot on the Murray last weekend. Have been hitting it up every Saturday for the last month or so and am seeing improvements in my bream fishing every week which is encouraging. Some may recall me complaining about snapped leaders and pulled knots a few weeks back. Well I'm now running 10lb TD Sensor and 12lb flouro leader on one spool. Have not had one direct bust off since changing over.
First cast at my regular snag I had to put it out well behind the snag as the tide was very low. It took a couple of minutes but to my surprise the first bite took drag (it was set heavy - my PB below didn't take any drag). As I tried to apply a little pressure within half a second of feeling the weight the hook pulled. On retrieval I was amazed to see why.
I am convinced that this snag houses an absolute monster of a fish. It is probably the same old bream that was biting through my leader and making my 4lb mainline snap clean. Can't wait to try and lure it back out again tomorrow afternoon. :-)
Pulled in probably a dozen or so fish in the 20 - 26 range and a couple that would have been slightly bigger. Dropped one that I believe would have been well over 30 too.
Tried a couple of other snags and got into a heap of smaller fish, then close to sundown flicked a prawn into some deeper water and pulled in my PB bream at 32cm. Probably caught 30 odd fish in the couple of hours I was there....and still have not explored up to where I suspect the best snags will be found.
Cheers
Buschy
PS Sorry about poor pic quality - taken with mobile.

South Mole surprise!
Submitted by BlowieMasta on Tue, 2010-11-30 19:19I head down to the south mole every few weeks to get a feed of squid/herring/gardies. Usually fairly consistent catch down there, with the occasional little run of choppas...
Went down recently with a coupla mates and didnt hook a single herring or gardie... but what we did catch was a bit of a surprise!
Early in the morning got into a few smaller fish that I have no clue what they are.. Maybe some kinda wrasse relative? Any suggestions? Its mostly white/silver with brown and blue stripes running from the eye to the tail... pic is second from the top...
Had a little fun with these, but was getting a little frustrated with not getting something to feast on. Then just as I was complaining I got into a couple of nice KG's! Never heard of anyone getting KG's from the south mole. Will be pretty interested to hear if anyone else has caught em there. They went about 37 and 38cm.
Was fishing reasonably light gear to keep things fun (8lb braid - 10lb fluoro carb leader and little shimano navi 2500 with lite bream stick) and when I got into a little 35cm tarwhine, it tested me a little.. Was great fun.
A little later on, probably around 10-11am by then, a school of salmon came thru smashing my baits! All on or just under the 40cm mark. Great fun on light gear too, but no where near as solid fighting as the smaller tarwhine IMO.
My mate took the cake with surprising catches that day tho! Apart from the tiny skippy he pulled up, he also brought up a good leatherjacket! Was a bit over 50cm! Never seen one caught shore-based, so we were a bit dumbfounded when he pulled it up! We werent even sure if it was a leatherjacket at the time (and still not 100%) and so we threw it back.
Kept the KG's, tarwhine and one salmon for a bit of a fried feast. Last thing I want to report is that I cannot understand why I've heard so many complaints about the eating quality of Aussie Salmon... We bled it and chilled it when caught, beer battered and deep fried.... it was delicious! Nice smooth flakey texture, no fishiness or strange flavours... quite delightful I thought!!
Overall interesting day of fishing and lots of fun! Never knew the smole had it in im.

Squid for tea
Submitted by DazSamFishing on Sun, 2010-11-28 21:08Decided to have a late start & not bother heading out wide after a discussion with John F indicating no one was doing well.
Watched the cricket for most of the day & thought about what was for dinner. Felt like squid so prepared the boat & got Sammy to come along as it would be a beautiful afternoon on the boat. (She also seems to bring some super luck with her).
Sure enough, her first cast... squid on. I got another & then couldn't score any others. John F & Scheckter scored 2 along side us too.
Prepared the squid rings & whipped up a salad & mango. Superb dinner.
How busy was the ramp today! Too many people at the ramp had been on the grog all day... inconsiderate most of em'.

Crays today
Submitted by silly on Sun, 2010-11-28 20:16With the easterly pumping this morning, we got out around 11am to be greeted by relatively calm seas. Hit up our spot and although viz wasnt the best 5m?, we managed to bag out on some good sized crays (>100mm) on one tank. Saw a horse of a cray (for the shallows anyway) but was just out of reach. Still heaps around but a little skittish still. Shells are still everywhere and the kacker reds are out in force.
