Sorry not fishing related but is strange.
Submitted by iana on Sun, 2014-02-16 07:30Over the last few days I have been in Melbourne attending my Brother in-laws funeral. The church where we attended the ceremony was a converted industrial warehouse i.e. concrete slab unit. (PS I'm not religious).
What astounded me was that outside the building bristled with security camera's.
There were 17 on the front entrance wall and 12 that I counted around the side wall overlooking the car park and walkway. The cameras were stacked in places 3 high and surveyed every square inch out side this building.
My thoughts are that this was not burglar security, but cameras recording and studying the congregation. Body language, persons volubility etc.
Anybody else ever seen anything like this?

Big mackie at Mandurah today
Submitted by meglodon on Sat, 2014-02-15 19:54Whilst coming into the cut at Mandurah about 1245 today I saw a guy fishing from the end of the south break water. I was watching this guy cast a mulie out and thought he would be lucky to get a tailor at this time of day. All of a sudden his rod loaded up and he was onto something really big, after making sure we where well clear of the break water we stopped and watched for about 15 - 20 minutes and to our great surprise a very good size Spanish Mackerel broke water right next to the break water.
Long story short it took two guys about 10 - 15 minutes to land this Mackie up on the rocks. All they had was what appeared to me to be a butterfly net to try to get the fish in. In the end one guy braved getting down and wet in the rocks and gilled it.
Who would have thought it a good size Spanish mack in the middle of the day of the Mandurah cut.
What next.

Trailer walkway
Submitted by Cruise Control on Sat, 2014-02-15 17:07Hi Guys
I want to install a walkway on my new trailer.
I dont want aluminium as its too slippery so I was thinking if I can locate some style of non slip grating that can be cut to fit and bolted on. What comes to mind is the grating that they are using on new jetties such as at Cockburn. Maybe some form of recycled high impact plastic in say a 30mm square grate.
I have done some looking but cant seem to find anything, does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can find this or perhaps a suitable alternative. Centres for fixing are at 900mm and I think that a width of 300mm would be good. Overall length of the walkway to be 3300mm.
All suggestions welcome apart from a night visit to a new jetty !
cheers

Best chilli / spicy sauces
Submitted by Ben Derecki on Sat, 2014-02-15 15:27I'm a pretty keen condiment junkie, I tend to use chilli and spicy sauces the most though.
Anyone got recommendations of different sauces along these lines? Tabasco gets a fair flogging here as does this insanely flavoured spicy tomato sauce I get mailed to me from a lady in Adelaide River Ma's Preserves) NT. I'm interested to know what everyone else uses though... especially some of the gear you can't get from Woolies etc.

One for the mechanics, Nissan GQ gearbox exchange
Submitted by carnarvonite on Thu, 2014-02-13 22:47Is it possible to swap a gearbox from a petrol GQ Patrol in to a GQ Patrol with a TD42 diesel'
Had a few answers back but they have all been from people who haven't actually done it. 'Can pick up a good petrol box for the right price but no sure it will fit.
The box that has to come out won't go in to 4th gear, whether its the syncro ring stopping it I won't know until I pull the box out and the top off for a look. Would rather have another box ready to go in.

Docking lines
Submitted by bradz on Wed, 2014-02-12 09:42Hi guys
Heading over to Rotto soon and need to make up 4 new docking lines for the jetty. I'm getting some 3 strand polyester but just need to ask what size would you use? My boat is a 6m Haines Signature.
10mm rope has 1700kg breaking strain
12mm rope has 2400kg breaking strain
All up the boat weighs about 1600kg (wet) but of course you arent supporting that much weight when docked to a jetty.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. The 10mm would make tying up easier and allow more turns on the cleats but the 12mm would offer greater abrasion resistance.
Cheers

2 x Aircon issues plus plumbing.
Submitted by saltydog on Mon, 2014-02-10 11:07Howdy,
The ole lady has a few issues with air cons at her home.
Her split system will turn on run for a couple of minutes then stop.
The evap just doesn't turn on (worked last season) she gets quite a few power cuts
so that may have triggered something / blown a fuse up in the head unit...dunno!
Plus she has a prob with hot water in the cold pipes that I suspect could be a non-return valve from the solar HWS.
So was wondering if anyone on here that can do the lot.
Trying to save a few $'s by not getting a few diff tradies out and paying for callouts.
The solar HWS Co. that she rang told her that she'd be looking at $130 for callout!!!
I told her that that don't seem right be she was adamant that's waht they said.
She's 73 invalid pensioner so any help would be appreciated.
cheers in advance

Near death experience
Submitted by Clown Fish on Sun, 2014-02-09 18:18Went to point walter today for my daughters 13th birthday to do a bit of ski bisketing(hate skiing/ bisketing at the best of times but it was her choice) to find it absolutely packed. I wanted to turn around and go home as soon as I saw boat trailers half a clik down the street but I didnt want to disappiont her.
I launched the boat finally after watching a couple of dickheads back their tubs into the water and then proceed to release the tiedowns in chest deep water, standard boat ramp shit/entertainment. We proceeded out to the marked ski area through the myriad of boats/jetskis doing 30 knots outside the bouys and got set up to do a couple of laps. On lap three my daughter fell off so instantly my spotters hand went in the air. Following us was a center console with half a dozen kids under the age of 8 with the skipper looking backwards at the adults he had in tow.
Every person on that boat was looking backwards! My heart rate went to marathon figures. I waved my arms and screamed so hard that I tasted blood in my throat. He was heading srtaight for my daughter. I think he must have heard my voice because about three boat lengths from my daughter he hit reverse and just missed her. The events that followed are the most stress I have ever had in my life. This guy did not give a flying fuck about what happened (waved his hands in the air and looks at me as if Im a serial killer!) I am still shaking whilst typing this. I retrieved my daughter and her best friend into the boat and told them it was over.
My ten year old son was crying, probably more from hearing his father scream like he had never heard before, from seeing a boat going full steam towards his sister. I called the day and explained to my daughter that there were too many inexperienced people on the water and it was extremely dangerous. My first expectation was to feel her heartbreak, but to my suprise she agreed with me.
How do I convince my Kids to get back on the boat? They are very shaken? What measures do I take to deal with this situation? More so, How do these people have RST's. Do we need to change the rules to have a more stringent licensing system.
My daughter was 15 meters away from death today. I invite all comments.
Regards, Nemo.

auto electrical advice wanted
Submitted by randall df223 on Sat, 2014-02-08 21:58Not fishing related but need some independent advice on auto electrics. I have a 2005 hyundai terrecan. We are having issues with the battery not charging properly. The battery and the alternator have been checked by the battery people as the battery is still under warrenty. They say both are ok and there is a problem getting charge from the alternator to the battery. We had a junior mechanic experienced with hyundais service the car today (private cashy job - he is still an apprentice and about to qualify as a mechanic) . He is not confident with auto electrical stuff. He run a test and believes the harness has burnt out. The test results are...
Volts 12.4
Measured 401 cca
Rating 540 cca
Battery type regular flooded
Battery location in vehicle
Cranking 10.08v
Time 0.84s
Low output
No load 13.42v
Loaded 12.48v
Is there an auto electrician out there that can provide some independent advice on my info to date and an indication as to how much it will cost to fix???

Importance of logging on with local sea rescue group
Submitted by Iceman on Thu, 2014-02-06 11:52Yesterdays rescue of 3 men has highlighted the need for you all to log on with you local sea rescue group.
If they had logged on with Cockburn or Fremantle. Procedure are in place and a search would have commenced sooner rather than waiting for the relatives to call us.
All three groups have Whitfords, Fremantle and Cockburn have vessels eqipped with FLIR cameras allowing us to search at night as well as the police choppers. Based on what happened if they had logged on I would expect a search would have commenced by 11.00pm once all the checks had been completed including locating the car/trailer at Woodman Point.
When you log on we require the following details:
Call sign - if registered with local sea rescue they would have issued you a call sign. If not a member you can use your vessels DOT number (found on the side of the boat).
Number of people onboard
amount of fuel
DOT Number if registered with one of the groups so we can cross reference the details in the event of a search
Point of departure - this allows us to search the car park for vehilce & trailer if overdue
Destination - don't need exact GPS unless diving. Just remember to advise if location changed. This assists us in knowing where to start searching
ETA - estimated time of return. Don't forget to advise if staying out longer or eta changed due to change in conditions.
If not returned within 15 minutes of ETA we will start calling on the radio. After 30 minutes we will call mobiles (if a registered member of the sea rescue groups). If still no response we will then contact the Water Police. If our vessels in the area we will also check the car park. Again we can only do this if registered with Whitfords sea rescue.
The 3 groups provide 24 hrs 7 day a week 365 days a year coverage so don't feel you are inconveniencing someone by calling early in the morning or late at night. It may save you life.
Whenever you call us wait until you are outside the marinas. Quite often we either cannot hear you or you may not hear us respond. Do the same when you return. Same for Rotto call us before you enter the bays.
For those who travel to Rotto and have VHF there is a repeater station set up on Rotto. So if you can't get us on 73 change to 81.
If you want more details and becoming an associate members just go to each of the groups website. Remember if you are a member of Fremantle and leave Hillarys you can still log on with Whitfords.
Remember taking a few minutes to log on may save you life.
