My first kayak experience!!!!!!!
Submitted by SPESS on Fri, 2008-06-06 20:55
Went out for my first kayak experience late this afternoon and with a borrowed fully set up rig off a mate including a sweet little sounder i went for a paddle off hillaries until i found some structure in pretty close holding fish. Armed with only a sol3000 and 17lb rod 20lb leader and some snapbacks i was quite amused picking these two beauties up. I think im hooked.

Kayak experience!
Sheesh mate, must of been good to get a feel what's it like to get a fish in a kayak. KG on a snapback is a added bonus mate. Top work. Which one was the first to be landed?

Pinky on pink first then got
Pinky on pink first then got busted up 3 times straight up. Had to be bigger pinks, this one went just iover 3kg. Shit its hard to land a fish in a kayak, nearlly fell out twice!lol. changed colour after that to blue speck and after drifting over some weed picked up 2 or 3 skips a wrasse and then the kg jumps on and is my biggest to date. Let me tell u that there are some good fish in close at the moment thats why i went out 4 a paddle.

Now thats gotta be something
Now thats gotta be something entertaining for the last couple of hours of the day. 3kg Pinky out of a yak is a darn good effort. I could say leaning over the side to belly lift the fish must of made you have your heart in your throat many times lol.
Always to get a PB mate. Well fed tonight I guess!
Cheers lads,

Good whiting at 71cm.
The snapper looks smaller than that.
If the snapper is bigger then the whiting it
would be weighing around 5 kilo. CAught a 77cm snapper two weeks ago that wieghed 5.5 kg and it had the lump on its head.

Hell yeah
Imagine a hook up with a sambo or decent shark.
You could end up klm away!
How do you stop moving in a yak? Do they have a type of brake or something?

This one had the foot pedals
This one had the foot pedals so you can actually cruise without a paddle and stay in the same spot if required with a slow drift u just use a little sea anchor. im no expert but basically the same rules to boating apply to this thing but manual labour and u have to do everything yourself. Im sure ill get it sussed over the next few times then it will be time to give it back to its owner.

Top effort Spess
A VERY tidy result Spec. Would a shorter rod be easier and holding the tip close to the yak?

How to land the big ones
Billybobs forum shows how he lands the big ones, everybody has different methods,,smaller fish just grab the leader and haul aboard, bigger one a gaff or lip grippers and bang them on the head,,,sharks any which way you can,,cut a slice behind the neck right through to the backbone, that stops them moving,,heres Bobs forum
