Mandurah flathead

Mandurah flathead

My brother caught this flathead while we were fishing the canals in mandurah this morning. Hardly ever see these in this estuary.

News to me

Havent caught one in the Peel Harvey ever (and fished all over it)

Have they (finally) moved in, because they use to be in the Estuary but disappeared prior to the cut when the water was "stinky"?

Exellent catch

It's been a hell of a long time since I've seen a flatty caught in Peel waters, as a kid (prior to the cut) they were caught quite regularly of an old jetty called Dalrymple's jetty next to the old traffic bridge.
Big flounder also used to be a regular catch from the same place. It would be great if at long last flathead were making a return to the estuary.
Some time back there was a FW member who put a post up saying he still managed to catch them with some regularity in the estuary when he specifically targeted them (lucky sod).
Just imagine what a return to the estuary of these fish would have on those targeting yellow fin whiting on the shallow flats.
If there is a few more reports of these fish being caught in the estuary I'll be trawling the flats with a cranka crab to see what turns up.

Interesting Megladon

Just questioned Cranka crabs for YFW. Targetting them and getting flatties would be a great double edged sword.

Both premium SW WA eating fish IMO.

The Peel system...

...should be an absolute haven for flathead, but I reckon ambush predators like them and flounder come off second best, waiting for food to come around...the blowies would clean up everything.

Over the past four years I have caught four flatties, on sp's, from the Old Traffic Bridge. Their sizes, in chronological order, were 39, 44, 48 and 50cm, so probably all the same fish!

I doubt that. If the fish was that keen to get caught by you 4 times, and you were so kind to release it, I am sure someone else has snaffled it for the pan!!!

I hope the other is true, that there is more and they are growing up!!!
