Wings on the leg
Submitted by Kingfisher549 on Wed, 2009-10-21 10:12
Just added a wing onto the leg to help with the boat lifting onto the plain.
The wing has done the job but at the expence of top end speed.
The lift at the rear of the boat at speed seems to have affected the boats ability to use the chines to hold the water.
The boat wants to chine walk at speeds that it didnt before.
Does anybody else have the same problem or am I asking to much from the boat?

I dont think it is a yes no answer
Im sure you would have to move weight play with PTT etc until you get the modification right. How many times you had it out since you added the wing.

hydrafoil????
Have just added a hydrafoil to my merc 125, was cavitating a bit when wakeboarding (when the weather was shit for fishing) and when getting up on a plane. Have only had it out once with it on and wasn't impressed at start but got used to it as the day went on. by the end of the day it was ok but haven't noticed huge difference yet......

we had them on our first
we had them on our first boat , they are great when you get used to them, as they are not just to raise the front up but also to help stabilise the boat at speed. try adjusting the trim untill it feels right , if you have the front too high up the boat wont sit on the plain properly, just mess around with it a bit using different speeds and adjusting the trim of the motor and you will find the best setup for your boat as each boat will perform differently

Wings on leg
Thanks people.
The wing is doing the job of lifting the rear of the boat out of the water.
The problem is when travelling at speed the boat doesnt seem as stable as when the wings where not on.
Can get to 45knots feels unsafe
Without wings 54knots no problem, can scare jetski's

Wing
If your boat travels well on its own don't put one on.If your boat rides like a pig put one on,they can ruin the ride on a boat that doesn't need it.They are usually put on as a last resort

POD
From your photo I see you have added a pod for the motor.in doing this you have altered the actual hull dimensions,Eg,added length of hull,(pod) weight of motor,(sitting back) this in itself will alter the way the hull performs,People add pods and do not think of the aqua dynamics of the keel and hull, also the motor, being .500 to a meter back alters the bow position, does your pod extend the full length of the hull(keel) or is it above the water line,if it runs the full length it should help support the motor, does it run the full transume width Hull (keel) side to side > know of a couple of people who thought they would extend the boat by adding to it,did not work well.just food for thought others may deffer.jersey

Pod
Thanks jersey, the pod follows the line of the hull and worked well when had a smaller motor. My problem is the power the motor has. The bow heads for the sky when the throttle is put down. The wings are to help push the bow down.

Hmm perhaps trim tabs for you instead, bit more expensive than the foil though!

I used one on my dingy, I lost some top end speed but my fuel economy improved, and it made it a heap for crabbing by myself as it kept the front of the boat down and made it easier to see the floats in close when I was pulling the pots.

Wings on leg
Thanks Dale, what you experience with your boat seems to follow exactly what is happening with mine. Dont mind the loss of a few knots in order to keep the nose down. Anyway I have been told I own a fishing boat not a ski boat.
