Wheres all the fisheries in the southwest :(

Was down the Bunbury cut today while waiting for dusk i was playing around with some small soft plastics and much to my amusment managed to get into some small pinkys great fun on light gear a guy noticed what i was catching and came down and started fishing close to me by now it was getting towards dusk so i switched over and started firing metals all over the place and getting into the tailor, when i look over at him and notice hes now into the baby pinkys and putting them in his bucket i had just caught a nice plump 35cm tailor so taking that with me i went over to explain that your not allowed to take them and i dont eat fish so i offered to give him my tailor and the rest i catch if he puts his baby fish back in the ocean to live another day him not speaking much english starts trying to tell me "No they bream no they size you go away" even if these were bream wearing pink and blue sequined outfits they were still undersize. (He then procedeed to scream at me everytime i released a fish) Getting sick of him i went to the car and tried to call the fisheries to see if they could come down and do something about the blatant slaughter of baby pinkys :( only to get a voice mail and told to try again later.

Been living in Dunsborough for two years now and fish at least once a week and never seen a fisheries officer at the ramps or in the water.

I reckon a few of us setup

Tue, 2010-03-09 07:05

I reckon a few of us setup our own 'Fisheries' for people like this. Would work well in the metro area.

There could be a dozen or so of us 'volunteers'. One of us sees something wrong going down....gets the word out....a short while later 10 of us rock up at that spot and ask the culprit nicely to put their fish back in the water.

I can also see it escalating and us ending up in jail....but if it was done properly, it could work.

Got paid a visit by the fisheries boys while getting ready to run the net out for some mullet for bait.
Even though I know both of them through sea rescue, they checked the mesh size, depth,my licence, float markings and even mates licence as well.

They asked if we had seen anyone down by the jetty earlier as they'd found an unattended net there, well inside closed waters.

After leaving us the parked up by the prawning jetty ,taking note of the vehicles parked there and watching what was being caught.

When we were returning home I noticed they had pulled one of the vehicles that was at the jetty over and were checking his catch, was good to see them out and about.

Thats the unfortunate part

Tue, 2010-03-09 14:32

not enough Fisheries officers to go around.  Noticed on the north mole last Sunday there were lots of ethnic people fishing and was watching to see what they caught but unfortunately,  it seems all their bucks )quite large) had lids on them so people couldn't see in, but didn't any fisheries officers either.

fisheries officers

Wed, 2010-03-10 18:13

hi all i am lucky enough to know a fishireies officer through a mate's mum, any way got to talking to him one night and he was telling me there is only a small number of licensed officer to the entire state of WA, cant member the number but it was somting like 15-20, and there isnt enough goverment funding to train and employ more, unfortunatly as a volentire officer the best you can do is take there details and report them, so there you go 15-20 people to cover the entire state oh and most of them are based in perth, i think he said there was only 2 or 3 in the north west, so i think as fishers i think we should stand up and not allow d.ck head mofos take juvinile fish

buschy im with you

I'd happily turn up anywhere to prevent the taking of baby fish especialy when the rest of us have to obide by the rukles thay should too. already do this down mandurah when fishing in the estuary and watch the types of people start scooping everything they can. i go and let them know they undersize you put them back if nothign gets done i grab bucket and tip it uspide down. im all for confrontation. and i thought these new licences we are buying weregoign towrds more officers or am i wrong on that and its just going into the money pit(commonly called the governments pockets)

people keep saying they'll take action

Thu, 2010-03-11 22:22

this is at least the 4th topic ive seen on this sort of issue on FW, and the 4th time ive seen people saying they'll start a group to do some civilian justice

but ask yourself is it really worth a potential jail term? and why hasn't one of these groups been formed yet if you're so passionate about it?

personally, i just see this as a really, really dirty tactic and will more than likely cause people to label you as a ruffian

it might not even end with a jail sentence, maybe a life could be lost, especially if a scuffle goes out of control

sure its annoying, but honestly we'll just become as annoying if people were to take this sort of action

im sorry if i'm sounding like some wiser-than-you bastard but i had to voice my opinion. this is starting to annoy me a bit

Totally agree Ashenfall

As with past threads, lots of shouting and chest beating, but no substance. I suggested on one thread to involve the media. Take some video shots of whats happening (thats not illegal), put the situation on the TV screen. Put it up as part of the argument with the fishing licence.

above the law

Sat, 2010-03-13 15:13

it doesnt matter how many officers we have there are always gonna be people that think they are above the law, and y dont we as fishers, or better yet AUSTRALIANS, stand up and do something about over fishing and undersize. its our duty i think and if it means taking photos and video or goin over to them and forcing them then good some one has too do it, any way thats how i feel
