What is your favourite rod and reel combination and why?

I thought this may provide some interesting information for some of the new members (and even some of the older ones) when they are considering what sort of set-up thet might want to use.

Landbased
My favourite outfit for chasing big tailor and salmon would have to be my Daiwa Moonraker (it was 13' 8" but probablly closer to 13' 4" after its recent rebuild) and a Shimano Stradic 8000 FI. I find this combination gives me great casting distance with minimal effort.
The rod is light enough to hold onto for long sessions, but strong enough to give me the power to pull fish around reefy sections if need be. This reel has never missed a beat after many, many sessions on the rocks and the beach and the smoothness of the drag is a major help when a decent fish takes off.

Offshore
My go too outfit would be my Daiwa Saltiga Z4500 and my Xzoga PE4 rod. This combination gives me confidence that it will tackle just about any fish I hook.

2500 stradic with T curve

Wed, 2009-09-09 11:12

2500 stradic with T curve before it died. Now the hearty rise evo with the 2500 stradic :)

I can rely on the stradic it hasnt missed a beat yet and the evo just feels so nice,

The t curve loaded up on all crazy angles without being close to snapping then one day it just randomly snapped :(

Taken me a few years worth of tax returns to build that collection up.

I always treat myself one reel per year.

What species fish are you targeting when you go offshore with that Col? Surely you would be better off with a overhead if you were going to do a bit of trolling for trout and mackeral??????

Hi toneshort

I have a few different overhead setups as well for offshore and some soft plastic combinations, but the Xzoga and the Saltiga always go with me.

My favorite landbased combo is my Daiwa 13ft Sensor Surf
with Ryobi Metal Royal spinning Reel. Hasnt let me down great distance casting with heavy weight in gale force weather conditions.

My favourite would be a steve starling rod I got years ago and rebuilt it with a abu 6500 proshop loaded with 6 kilo braid. Has caught many an eagle ray right up to spanish mackeral up Steep Point and big tailor and salmon down south. Got a new rod and reel that is fast becoming my favourite though, it's a Polikansky 2010 loaded with a lot of 10 kilo braid on a custom built rod built by Barneyboy. Friggin' awesome

A favourite of my quiver is a Stradic 4000 with a custom built 6'6" pacific composite graphbutt and 20lb braid. Nice and light for working plastics with enough balls to stop big snapper and sambos. Best to date is a 25lb sambo and a 20lb snapper.

My favourite for almost all situations up in Dampier

Thu, 2009-09-10 08:58

has to be Monstermesh matched with saragosa 14000. Have even used this for trolling using it instead of the Shim TLDs. Then bottom bouncing and it jigs well to. Problem is the boss got hold of it and now its hers. So I use a trusty old ugly and TLD25 for trolling, a Berkley dropshot pro matched with a Saragosa 8000 for bounching and a Lacunas jigrod with Saragosa 8000 for jigging.

But then I have at least 20 other rods and reels to mix it up. I think I am the Saragosa nut and now own 8!!!! Just love them to death. Some say a upgraded Spheros but I think it is more like a downgraded Stella, and I think my Saragosa 4000 is better than my equivalant sized Stella (I only have one of these because I am rough with my gear)

My favourite (one and only reallly) is an Okuma 6'6 Solid Tip rod in hot pink and black with a Navi Shimano 5000 reel.  I love it because it has a wippy tip that casts well and I have caught a few good whiting with it.  Sometimes I have to fight the boys (5 &7yrs) off even though it is pink.  They want to use whatever rod has caught the first fish.  It is all good fun and even better if they catch something too.
