Gonna start doing regular trips up north and want to bring fish fillets back. Weve got a deep freezer so we need a generator to run it. What power minimum would we need? Had a quick look on gumtreee and they are all different Kva I dont even know what that means I know nothing about generators. We were gonna hire one I havent seen the price to hire them but figure might be better to buy one any advice greatfully accepted

We run a 60 litre engel as a freezer and another type as a fridge up north plus lights at night on a 1 kva Honda no problems at all.

G'day mate,

I bought a 1000w yamaha 4 stroke generator and it easily powers my deep freeze on extended fishing trips up north. It has an option of economical mode or full throttle if the device you're powering requires more power. I think it cost me around the $1100 mark about 4 years ago. When driving back to Perth I simply put the deep freezer toward the stern of the boat and tie down my generator on the transom with the exhaust outlet facing back. If the exhaust is too close to say a wall or an obstruction I have found the engine cuts out (No surprises).

The 1000w genie can easily power a small camp site for example I was powering my engel, a flourescent light and a stereo system at the same time with no dramas.

Cheers

Ben

Without going right into it, and what it all means.

Find out how many watts your freezer and everything else you want to run uses add this all together to find out you maximum load in watts.

To work out how may watts a genny puts out multiply the continous kva output by 800. ( x1000 = VA x.8 worse case power factor)

so a 1kva genny will put out 800Watts and a 2kva jenny will put out 1600Watts.

Dont look at the peak output of the genny, only the continous rating. And worth spending the money for a yammy or honda scilent inverter type.

I use a 1kva yamaha inverter for camping and as backup to charge boat batteries and am very happy with it.

Dropped in to Repco here in town today and was told of a couple who's alternator died near Dongara on Friday night, tied the generator to the roo bar and used the 12volt outlet to keep the battery from dying and drove through the night to Carnarvon without any more mishaps.

If its only one camp and freezer then the 1kva Honda or Yammie but any more than that go for 2kva
