What does an avg day of fishing cost you?

Ok, putting it out there, what does an average day out on the water cost you all up - add the car petrol to get there, bait, ice, food, fuel, what you spend losing gear.  Just a rough average on an average trip out.  I know its an out there question because theres so many variables that factor in, but whats a rough estimate of a 'usual' day?

(not including the brownie points or pink slip costs) :)

landbased? is say about $50

Mon, 2011-05-30 13:02

landbased? is say about $50 plus beer. if i take the CRV, thats saying i drive about 100km round trip(live in the hills) $20 for fuel $20 for bait and $10ish for loss of gear. im a neat fisherman untill i start fishing. i usually spend a couple of hours in the week after a trip re organsing my gear but my time is free!.

the tinny isnt much different, only in the river so my bait cost goes down to $5, $40 for boat/car fuel and might loose a lure if im unlucky.

food dosnt really appear on my trips because i only do half days mostly, i dont use ice, i have the refreezeable gel packs.

once every few trips ill get a "free trip", bait from previous trip/spare fuel. i buy 2kg mulie blocks knowing it will last me two trips, i find having more there is good insurance/gives you better bait choice due to the thaw rate.

so really $50ish a trip not including beer. happy to spend it as i can spend tripple that on a good night at the pub.

If i take out me dinghy it probably only costs around $50, if i go in a larger boat around the $150+ mark. Much higher price paid with the "Trouble-n-Strife" though.

Similar to other LB fisho's , around 5-15 on bait, 10-50 on fuel plus assorted lures, tackle etc.

Prob an average of $25 a time, but I've only been  estuary fishing of late.

Usually shared with my fishing mate and living in Bayswater the river aint that far.

Losing 3 30 $ lures in a row can quickly change that though Damn Ron courtney snag heaven

fuel : $150~300 depending on

Mon, 2011-05-30 14:28

fuel : $150~300 depending on if I go past Rotto or not. ( V8 mercuisers can get thirsty and being moored on the river costs a few litres to get to the sea and back  )

bait and consumables : $30

food  & drinks : $20 max.

if I take a deckie or mates with, then they nromaly expected to toss in $50~80 for fuel and something towards the bait if they did not bring any.

Must be on the big bucks up in the city...

Mon, 2011-05-30 14:47

Lets see it is 3km to the boat ramp so my car total would cost me about 60 cents....

4 to 8 Mile each way to most the "regular spots" makeing it about 8 to 16L of fuel (12 to 24 bucks) if I am in a rush to get there...

Bait is either fresh squid or whiting or caught out there on softies...Rarely loose a lot of gear so Ill say about 5 bucks for that

I would guess about $30 for a day out on my boat....easy to cover with a feed of fish

Ferals boat is a some what different prospect....

maybe i should post that pic on here eh Matt :)

as for my boat .. $120 in fuel for 80mile round trip last week

$20 on plastics and sinkers ..

$20 on  car fuel . .

$6 for a pie and drink for breakfast at 5am ..

thats about it i think ... $150 - 200 total .. and thats doing a few miles

agree that good deckies that pay ... like Matt and Ray are pricless at the end of the day ..

as for brownie points ... stay single .. its cheaper :P

$30 fuel  - XJ cherokee guzzles

$15 in bait

$6 pepsi max.

$51 total. i usually have another 2 people and although i dont expect cash they hide it in places.

Its a pretty easy $150 minimum for me, with ice, bait, fuel, and then lost gear goes on that. Nothing worse than feeling of nothing where there once was a $30 lure or jig.

I normally launch from either

Mon, 2011-05-30 15:18

I normally launch from either Hillary's, Ocean Reef, Mindarie or Two Rocks and either out to the FADs, around Rotto or further north 3-6 mile or out at Direction Bank.

Longest trip I have done is the FADs circuit down to FFC, trolled the south side of Rotto and some other bits of bird chasing in the same day, we logged 125nm that day.

Truck $8-18

Parking $6-8

Fuel  $70-230

I now make my own ice (most of the time) and hardly ever use bait.

Old freezer probably takes about $70 a year to run??

Dont skimp

Mon, 2011-05-30 15:18

Drive to damps and back in the landie $10, would be bloody more if I used the WRX to go there and not even tow the boat.

Boat fuel use 60l fuel average a trip, ie $90 roughly, Oil $10

Bait $20 (2 packets of squid bought from the fish truck, fresher and better than bait squid) and 1kg mulies.

Miss uses bait and looses on av 2 rigs to snags and taxmen. Gamie hooks and swivels I use not cheap, say $10.

Placky and jigs I loose about $10 worth a trip.

Drinks, 2 cartons for the missus and 4 for me. $300. Well at least come home full as!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL. Probably in reality $20.

Adds up fast. $170. But a round of golf can be about that much with the green fees, buggies and balls I loose. And nowhere as relaxing.

Firstly , Tony. sounds like you got the wrong sort of v8.

Running a 350 chev we average around the 80 ltrs p/trip at an average of 50nm. then bait , ice, food and drinks . i would say around the $150 mark. not including the gear that is lost. i make my own sinkers from free lead so minimal cost. so maybe up to $170 on the bad days when we lose a bit of gear.

lol joys of a 502 mpi 8,3L guzzle monster...lol

but I end up using a bloody bit of fuel between Ascot and Freo harbour and back again, thats the bugger.

I find I'm burning 15L per hour on the Swan, but closer to 50L per hour out at sea at 30knots. Also the Berty is not light & is wide at close to 10 feet, so a lot fo drag as well. But I love the tub and forgive her for her thirst

Cheap as

Mon, 2011-05-30 15:49

Fuel for the Landcruiser = 10l Diesel @$1.40~ = $14.00

Fuel for the Boat = 5-35lt per trip averaging 10lt @ $1.30 = $13.00

Oil for the boat = 12$ 1l 12/5 = $2.40

Bait - use squid head from previous trips

Burley - Chook pellets from city farmers 30kg for $28.00 28/30 = $0.93

Fish Oil - 5$ a bottle or get talking with the fish and chip bloke down the street and get for free

Ice home made or a bag for $3

Beer - $13-17 a sixpack

Squid jigs - lost a few lately, but had a purple patch before and still have most of my original 'good' jigs $21/3 = $7.00 a trip

Total = $62.33 Worst case average trip

Surprisingly more than I thought it would be, but then:

Large Local caught Squid Prices - Whole @ Kailis Freo $34.00 per Kilo

Pretty sure the last few times I have been out and we have been close to bagging out squid with two anglers on the boat we would have easily had 5-7kg of squid.  My half share of 26 squid weighed 1.6kg cleaned. 7x34 = $238.00

Or like the charter in Mandurah Feb 2010 $150 per angler, 1 Dhufish @ estimated 22-24 kg maxed out the boat scales.  Fillets and wings were 12kg + @ Market rate of $80kg for fillets again at kailis = $960.

When I told Jane about the price of fish in stores these days she instantly turned from being negative about fishing missions to positive and asked when I would next be going out!

Cheapest way is going on

Mon, 2011-05-30 16:20

Cheapest way is going on someone else his/her boat!

IF YOU TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION ALL THE REAL COSTS then it will be another story when having your own gear/boat.

*Principal Price of boat and the interest that requires or not earns.

*all the electronics/safety gear, gadgets ,bling and other must have bits and bobs

*Appropriate towing vehicle.

*All licenses/fees insurances.

*All the bits and bobs in fishing gear you have "invested"

* books /magazines/freezers/storage/memberships.

And,... the list will be bigger of items of cost I have forgotten as I suffer from CRAFT.

BUT, it is fun to do, so no adding up on my side nor a estimation

My last trip to Exmouth

Fuel towing the boat there and back                  $1,460

Accommodation at Overlander             $220

Accommodation at Exmouth                             $3,238

Fuel for boat                                                     $300

Bait                                                                  $8

Lost tackle                                                       $30

All for 2 days fishing after the boss injured her back on the first day out.  $2,628 per fishing day.  Ouch.

In Perth or Exy though I would estimate probably $200 - $250 for a day trip.

When I bought the boat and the cruiser

Mon, 2011-05-30 19:26

I did some research on petrol vs diesel vs LPG and decided petrol.  The boat when loaded would be close to the 3.5t max towing limit for the cruiser and I was advised that petrol would be gruntier and the better option for towing (perhaps not cost wise).  As my trips to Exy are generally an annual event I went with petrol.

I did the same thinking and a turbo diesel cruiser with the same k`s was about 12 grand dearer to buy at the time. My petrol v8 averaged 27 litres/ 100km towing the boat to exxy, empty it weighed 2.7t on the weighbridge. Has fuel, water, ice etc in it up here so closer to 3.3 now I reckon. Lots of k`s needed to get that 12grand back if I went diesel.

Yeh it all depends

Mon, 2011-05-30 18:54

but on average it would be $70 to a $100 day for a local fish and say another $50 or so to fish the cape. Most of this is fuel and oil and a block of mulies or 2. Iam not into converting dollars spent to kilos of fish. If I was I would have stayed pro fishing!! Considering I used to do $200 a night and $400 with the missus going out and getting on the piss, it really is cheap entertainment, without the hangover!!

This is a topic I've kept in the back of my mind and tried not to give too much thought.

A reasonable day out will see us use 100lt of fuel and burn through a bit of Optimax oil, also taking into consideration bait, a few beers and launching fees, no change whatsoever from $200.

All in all, it keeps me entertained for 8 hours a time and we generally always have a good supply of dhufish fillets. All good!! [still don't want to know the real cost, I'm happy with my blinkers on]

Dont ever think about it, too scary. I`ve got a log off all the fuel we`ve put in the boat since we got it, added it up once and fell over

Dont really care either, its what we do. . Got mates who spend more on smokes I reckon. . . I know what I`d rather spend it on .

$15 to tow to Dampier and back

$150 boat fuel to target marlin for a big day

$50 more if we decide to head out further to bag a few reds

So total a bit over $200 for a good 12 hours of hard core fishing, split it with ya mate and you get a bloody good deal I reckon, especially if ya got a few big emperor fillets and half a dozen squid on the way home.

Dont buy bait, as we catch livies on the way out or use self caught gardies.

Not gonna put $50 for a carton of piss, as I would drink it if I was home anyway.

Mine lately = $0

Been soley fishing with lures/poppers/metals, no bait no berley. No travel costs (company vehicle). Haven't had to buy a cracker for ages, so saving money, but always coming home with fish from the beaches, even if it's only a dozen big herring. I also got a no buy policy thing going on where I'm going to the Abrohlos in September to justify my no spend, so having a win, and really enjoying lure fishing :)

in the end it doesnt realy matter how much or how little you spend as it is something you enjoy doing.

other hobbies can cost a lot more but we still do what we enjoy and just limit the amount of times we go fishing and in all reality if we werent prepared to spend the $ we wouldnt have bought a boat or all the pricey gear. the true value is a real scary thought when you add up the cost of just owning a boat

exactly, got "three horse power" manure makers in the paddock here and boy they can cost more than a dys fishing...

Ask anyone who owns any hobbie equipment if it's cheap?? Golf...NO, Scuba diving...NO, motorX...NO....

See fun always costs money, and we pay it cause it's cheaper than drinking to take the sorrows away...lol

in close = $20

out wide = $100 incl. parking ticket/food/drinks

fortunately my local ramp is 1.8km down the road, so negligible car fuel costs.

150-200ltrs of diesel

Thu, 2011-06-02 07:45

from the Marina to the Billy grounds return here in Exmouth , motor doesn't stop all day and running at anything from 7 to 10 knots trolling , then around 15-18 knots on the run home, plus all the added bits , food and drinks/beer etc , depends on how many on board , 6 guys usually rounds out about $75 a head , don't even take into account ,outfits , lures and rigging gear .

really depends... anywhere from $0 if im just walking down to flick some lures for bream, or $200-300 + a day if im on holidays up north somewhere or charter boat fishing. usually a metro landbased fish costs about $30 bucks or so for some bait, fuel and beers or a feed.

Islands

Thu, 2011-06-02 20:53

On a normal trip to the islands, around 80nm , I use 50 litres @$1.63 = about $80. Catch own bait and produce ice as well, don't take more than 3 mid strengths cans so comes to a total of $90-95.

Bloody cheap compared to sailing the new sea rescue Naiad up from Freo a forthnight back, twin 300 Yammies , 10 metre Naiad = 1180 litres for 517nm at around 25-27knots.
