Don't bother cooking mine
Don't bother cooking mine mate, I love sashimi squid.
Skin them, then cut them into thin strips like noodles, then dip into a soy & wasabi mix.
Being half jap, I can tell you that using tamari soy sauce instead of regular soy will make it even better.
The most common brand in Perth is http://www.kikkoman.com.au/homecooks/tamari_soy_sauce.asp

I will eat the little ones
I will eat the little ones as they come over the side of the kayak,,,,
Saves having breakfast before i go.
Personally i would have emailed all the boat entrys, the organisers might find they will all rebook and no need to advertise for boat entrys.

How many comps per year?
How many comps are you going to be holding per year and are you going to continue to hammer the sound? Maybe a change of location might be a better way to protect an already fragile fishery!

Great idea
make it in Geographe Bay - we have a huge area and it's lightly squidded in comparison to the metro area - plus the wheels might fall off the old boat trailer if i tow it up to the sound.

Unlikely
They'd have to reeeeeeeally hammer the sound to squid it out. Squid have a short life span (die within 1 year), reproduce no worries and grow very quickly.
The destruction of seagrass is a bigger problem than people catching squid as they have less and less places to lay their eggs.

There's nothing wrong with
There's nothing wrong with the squid fishery. If there's fact of it in trouble then there'll be something done about it. To be honest, I do agree with you to a point. I do like to see the boat limit reduced and possibly a minimum tube size limit?? As our calamari squid have a lifespan
At the moment the squid fishery is as healthy as ever. Bear in mind the comp is not restricted to the sound. Its from the sound to North Mole.
I dont see you so concerned about the fishing comps held by various fishing clubs every month or the Swanfish and other similar comps.
This is just a new comp in its infancy. Im not the organiser of the comp and do not know where and how many more comps will be held. I do know it'll be a hit with the hardcore squidders out there. Who knows it may become a state wide comp and maybe nationals.
Eh? Huggy?? Maybe we can better our last score.....wat was it? 3 in 3hrs between the 3 of us??

Yeah, something like that
The comp is the day after my mates bucks do, so on compasionate grounds I am going to pass. I doubt I'll be legally able to drive to the comp anyway. LOL

Infancy
I could understand that you might not see my concern for the Swan fish as I have not seen a forum on F.W. to voice my opinion.
In my opinion I think one squid comp a year out of the sound is a good thing. But now obviously off the success of the last comp it is been held again. As you have mentioned the comp is in its infancy and it will grow to put more pressure on the sound.
As mentioned in other posts the squid fishery might be in good health but I think that other species also benefit from them at this time of year.
As for other club comps they vary their locations to limit there impact on a particular area.
You might not be the organizer of this comp but you certainly promote it.
Shall we wait until the fishery is in trouble and then fix it?

Yes I agree we do need to be
Yes I agree we do need to be careful with this sort of catch and keep comps but although this is the 2nd time in the Sound, it may not be in the Sound next round. Its also limited to 40 boats and the rest are from kayaks and landbased. The area, as indicated, covers from North Mole to Rotto and then to the bottom of the Sound. The competitor dont have to fish from the sound for squid, there are other spots. I highly doubt everyone are able to bag out. Dont forget why there are bag limits. Yes I promote it as I have a vested interest in it but I do not have any influence on how, when and where its held.
I can pass the details of the organisers to you if you wish to speak to them about it.

1. Most of the folks in the comps are keen squidders and no doubt a lot would be out there anyway catching a feed of squid on that weekend.
2. Most boats and landbased don't fish the Sound from what i could see from my kayak at Woodies,, Boats head various points North and west of the Sound, landbased are scattered all over (a few at Woodys and maybe ASI as well).
3. The Comp had no affect on the squid at Woodies in the days or weekends after,,in fact it has gone right off at times.
4. If there was 500-1000 boats all limited to the Sound it maybe caused for concern, but not say 100 0r 200 boats from Rocky to North Mole.
My only complaint why was it not held 20 years ago ?

flip side!
Squid & squid comps are quite sustainable,if anything squid takes the pressure off slower growing finfish!

Maybe Minister Norman Moore
Maybe Minister Norman Moore will put up some prizes and a trophy and encourage more squidding and less pressure on dermesals ?
I could arrange a kayak for him to go in the Comp, but he will need to clean his own,,unless he like them raw (remove the jig first Minister!!) lol

How?
How does taking squid, take the pressure off slower growing species?
The point I am trying to get across here is that we should vary the location of the comp. Why not target Warnbro sound instead?
F.W. is a forum for voicing our opinions on certain issues raised, and as organisers of fishing comps maybe the people involved should log on to it. I am not against competition fishing but I am against comps that are held in one particular area too often. Most good fisho's I know (blokes in thier 50's and 60's) farm their spots and they continue catching on these spots and have done for years. They have seen first hand what over fishing does to an area.
As for keen squidders getting out that weekend or any other weekend is probably correct, but what about the other people the comp attracts that wouldn't be going out?
Like I have mentioned before I am not against comps, but they need to be thought through and target areas with concern to that fishery and the other species in it.
It is good debating this point with you blokes and shows that forums like F.W. are a healthy addition to our passion........................Fishing.

better outcome!
If ppl are targetting squid (gaining popularity) they arent targetting slow growing finfish as much.......better outcome imo!

I think part of the reason
I think part of the reason the Comp has the starting point at Cockburn is the great launching areas, the fact that the shop hasallowed the back to be used for the weigh in,nearby toilets and its central area to access good squidding, Warnbro Sound could be looked atbut i think the land based guys will not have much options plus i would be buggered if i can catch any squid in the area,,Geograph Bays the same,,no landbased as the Busselton jettys closedbut it willstill be a great location for boats and kayaks, maybe they will look at a comp down the once a yearfor the South Westers?
Its my belief theres 3 rounds,,the last being the Grand final, all points from each round add up from what i can gather, i guess the last round will be Nov-Dec.

Yes quite correct there
Yes quite correct there Shorty. Its not just a matter of getting a comp on in one area. There alot of factors why comps are held in certain areas. Who knows, the next one maybe could anywhere but Cockburn Sound... Like I said, its only in its infancy and alot of organising and management have been thought out before a comp is started.

It will be interesting to see if it goes ahead this week, Sundays not looking to bad at this stage,,windy early on but then dropping,,i believe the of 20th September is the back up day if its cancelled.
Squid might be a bit hard to find this week, after this blow and dirty water,,most land based and yaks may not get 5 squid, it will be interesting to see what happens.

How did everyone go?
Was the comp even on today?
The only decent squid I saw caught at north mole this morning was by a bird (Heron) who had speared it with its beak. The poor squid was inking away but ended up being carried to the rocks, stabbed to death and swallowed whole. Squid was around 25cm long.
I caught 1 squid, which was smaller than my 3.0 jig.

Dasho,,it was very tough,,i
Dasho,,it was very tough,,i caught two small squid this year,,last round 25,,,10 in the first hour ,,the water was murky and a bit breezy and raining earlier,,numbers were down as you would expect but a nice little turn out at the weigh in all the same,,,,,,,,,,,,3 rd place in the boat section had only 8 squid,,
Matt Gillet who got 2 nd in the kayaks last year teamed up with a mate in a boat this year and they won it (Ranger Canning vale) the team was called,,just under 5 kilos for 10 squid i think it was.
Some great prizes again as you would expect,,everyone got a squid lure at checkin(or maybe just the early birds) worth more than the entry fee.
Next round is just before Easter next year,,all points will tally for the Grand final (probally 3 rounds)
Now excuse me while i put some Batterys in my new u beut Daiwa clock
BTW > Honsu never showed up to cook our squid so give him a serve next time anybody goes in
,,one chap got a u beaut Egi rod donated by Oceanside,,so we might be able to forgive him just this once,,lol

Heres a few random shots of the day,,no adults lined up for the best inked person this time,,they leant to dodge fast ,lol,,these kids copped it though ,lol, the young lady won that.
One of the stars of the kayak show was a friends son,,he handled the 16 foot kayak like a pro and caught his first squid to boot, he was last seen leaving clutching a Harmitsu jig,Team Daiwa sticker, his squid for lunch and a big smile on his face.
It will be great to see the kids of today bringing there kids to squid comps in the future
This picture sums up what the squid comp is all about in this case Father and son /(also familys enjoying quality time together.)

Hard Fishing
We too found it hard going today. To be honest, we were very surprised our bag made it to the top at the end of the day. The water was as dirty as I've seen it recently, and spots that had been generous to us recently, only gave up a few squid.
Was a great way to spend a day on the water though, with the weather coming good as the day wore on.
Colin, is that your adventure island? We just got the Pro Angler in at work, it's an absolute machine. May have to buy it for myself for xmas!!
Cheers

Matt, thats not my Adventure
Matt, thats not my Adventure island, my Adventure is the same colour and i have ordered the sail kit so should arrive soon,,i will get the trampolines as well, look forward to the possibiltys that the Adventure Island offers.
The guy that owns that is very safety concious,,he has EPIRB and the whole kit and kaboodle,,not bad for pottering around Woodys Pt for squid.
BTW >I agree the PA is a great machine, the way it turns on ts own axis really impresses meand is faster than i thought it would be.
Well done on todays effort,,that was a top bag on a tough day,,cheers

correct me if im wrong but that yak with the outriggers , wouldnt they interfeer with the fishing as you wouldnt be able to fish with the line straight down with the beems going out to the pontoon and if you got a good fish that wanted to run the pontoons would be in the way

Well that would be correct
Thanks Dasho,,Russ well that would be correct the way he has his rods placed like that straight down but most have rod holders that have the line over the top of the outriggers,,trolling is very popular,if you hook a big fish you can pull the outrigger in so its flush with the hull out the way also,,,many folks just take one out rigger out as well leaving one side clear.
For the purpose of squidding though no dramas and that Alvey setup in the fore ground would catch a Great white easily, lol, the squid would have no chance .
