worth taking a dingy to steep point
Submitted by TAPOUT on Sun, 2009-08-23 11:31
probably heading to steep point next month and wondering if its worth taking a dingy or should we take a bigger boat. Would prefer to take a dingy as its heaps easier and cheaper on fuel. Also has anyone been in September just wondering what the weather and fishing was like. Any advise or suggestions would be appreciated.

Steep Point
Gday TapoutMate, woud be worth having a look at www.steeppoint.com.au . One of the good things with this site, is that you can email the ranger at steep point as plenty do and get it straight from him, apart from that there's a lot of info on there.

Take the dinghy!!
The last 3 trips ive been up there we have taken a 14ft dinghy in with us, even if the weather gets a bit hairy the south passage is always good for medium size pinkies, spangoes, black snapper, bluebone and a few others. I wouldnt go without it now. Good luck, i will be up there in october so leave some fish for me.

Steep Point
We took a 5.8 ali to Steep Point launching it from Denham, took a heap of gear across in the boat, took less than an hour, got there before the vehicles. It was no hassles and we fished a fair way up north along the west coast of Dirk Hartog Is in comfort.Caught heaps of pinks, baldies & Mackies, we we there in late August a couple of years back.

I'm heading up on the third,
I'm heading up on the third, staying on the beach for 7 days. Will let you know how it goes - we're taking up two dinghys, a trailered one ~14ft and one that'll fit on the camper trailer 12 ft or so for inshore and crabs :) I hear the roads are pretty corrugated at the moment, slow trek in - this was early August
Will let you know what it's like :) 7 days 5 lads 3 cars 2 boats 1 aim. Fish - and big ones at that...

Gave them a call at the rangers hut today, got the following in response to the grading of the road:
the last 16km of corrugations on the track in are still there, and they are the worst section - with the rain they've had the last week, probably gonna get a little worse...
They're still waiting on that last bit to be graded, not sure when this is going to occur...

do it
Take it up mate, theres plenty of fishing options for both the big boys and the little tinnies, just decide which way the winds blowing. Plenty of bluebone in the shallow country if you can find the bommies, on both the west and eastside.

Sounds like the tinny might be the go then. We are heading up on the 19th and have booked a beach spot also so Pete looks like we might be neighbours.

Yeah but
Yeah it's definately worth taking the tinny but make sure everything on your boat / trailer is fastened down tight if you haven't done a bumpy track like that before. Throw in some bush-mechanic gear with you too just in case. There's a numberplate of ours floating around there somewhere and we nearly lost a mud guard after some of the welds cracked and the back half started rubbing on the tyre. Had to spend 1/2 hour wiring it into place half way back along the track.
