Van Staal Info

Ok the van staal 150 has arrived and just wanted a bit of info.
The reel feels stiff turning the handle is this common or is a breaking in period required to loosen it up abit.

Thats normal as they are sealed and oil filled they feel stiff.
If you wind the handle for a while to warm it up it will feel smoother.

Jig with mine ALL DAY with no problem (very light reels)!!! You pay for quality and for the fact that you only buy one in a life time !!

You just hook the line with yuor finger and feed it on. If the fish is rocketing off you give yourself a little line and do the same.
Fishoreub : Sounds like you need to come out on the boat and pull a Dhuie (or Sambo) with one !! More than welcome !! But you'll be saving the pennys for your own soon after!!

They're not rough, what you
They're not rough, what you thought was rough was the gears meshing together. Remember these VS are built with very little tolerance. No you're not actually for the name, well partly. The high cost comes from how its made. Machine cut from a chunk of steel is not easy and produces alot of wastages. Its also costly way of manufacturing it. Sure the Saltigas and Stellas are smoother but they are built with "cast" metal bodies. They're also hollow inside.
The weight you thought was heavy was actually the oil stored inside the body of the reel. So its constantly lubricated.
As for the no bail arm setup....Look at the old Mitchell 489 and 499s they had the exact same setup. The trick is the wind the roller to your casting finger, pick the line and cast. You dont have to unhook the line off the roller. Just pick up and wind. To retrieve line its simply pick up the line on your finger like your about to cast it, then wind the reel, the roller will come around and catch the line off your finger.
Note: people who switch hands to cast would not be able to use bail-less VS. The rotor/roller will only turn in a direction towards your casting hand. Im left hand caster, therefore I get a "left handed" Van Staal which will have an "L" denoted on its model number.

Oh...reel will feel stiff at first becoz the gears had no tolerances so therefore it needed to be "worn in" so to speak. It'll loosen up nicely and then it'll be bullet proof!!

I have seen Al Bevan dunk a VS reel over the side of the boat and leave it in the water for 10 mins and then pull it in and stick it in the rod rack then drive out to the containers and go on to land about 15 Sambo's on that reel all between 15 and 40 kg, at the end of the day all the reel got was a squirt of fresh water and air dried then in the car and back the next day to do it all again, WHAT other reel can do that day in day out. ( running pe8 as well)
I don't think he would have 15 of them if they were crap.

No oil in reel
A few posts I’ve seen say oil filled in different forums.
Looking at the service footage there is no sign of oil filling anything.
Just full of grease.No oil.

If they half as good as the old Mitchel 499. They'll be a cracker. I had two. Back in mid 70's.
Used them on the big mulloway off beaches in S.Australia. Also the huge Kingies, and up to 40lb Snapper we got in those days...
Once you got used to the roller arm picking up line. It was no different to manually using a Bail arm. I preferred it that way.
Shame I don't use big eggbeaters..
