Tasmanian moving to Perth - Help!!

Hey All,

Well life has turned upside down and inside out for me recently and I now find myself relocating to south of Perth!! As most of you are, I am a fishing nut and hanging out to get over there and sample what WA has to offer.

I have trolled the internet and now have a rough idea of what I may encounter. I would also love to hear from anyone who can offer some info on their favourite fish and locations to help me target my efforts in the coming summer months until I find my feet. I will land there in early December, will have a 4WD, 6.7m hard top Barcrusher and just about every bit of gear to target any fish on the planet.. So I am pretty flexable. Love my flyfishing and will do this as a preference but it really doesnt matter what weapon I am holding as long as I am on the water..

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Will Likely be somwehere between rockingham and Mandurah but nothing is fixed at this stage. Not to worried about travel 1 to 1.5hr driving is nothing if it gets you on the fish..

Welcome to the forum, and WA (when you get here).  I'm sure you'll know this, but go to www.fish.wa.gov.au and familiarize yourself with the rules and regulations regarding boating and fishing in WA.

Welcome to WA & Fishwrecked

Inland fishing (Freshwater Licence) is bit of a hit/miss situation in thePerth Metro and  SW districts, with poor rainfalls and drought, many rivers, dams and streams are extremely low or dried up.  Fishing is prohibited in Public water supply dams. Some rivers have even been closed by the Dept of Fisheries, others have seasonal closures and limitations.

Beach fishing can be variable and unreliable at times, but offshore fishing is good and if you have the equipment, this is the way to go.  There are of course strict safety rules which should and must be observed and licences are required for a number of types of fishing as mentioned above by Ashen.  There are also very strict bag limits and heavy penalties for non compliance.

I have lived in WA now for 45 years and fished from the NW to the SW on and offshore.  Unfortunately fish these days are often much harder to find.   Good Luck and enjoy the greatest State in AU!

Just checked out the WA gov website and you are spot on, there are very strict regulations in place. All good for the fishery but couldn't believe the 4 month snapper closure in cockburn sound!!!

Thanks,

Dan

 Gday mate,In those areas

Sun, 2015-10-25 12:49

 Gday mate,

In those areas that you are thinking of moving to, I reckon u will absolutely love salmon season when it comes. I know you are Tasmanian, so I am talking about the ocean Australian salmon. Here in WA we have our own species, called west Australian salmon, which fight much harder because on average they are a couple kg's bigger than the normal Australian salmon. Anyway salmon are found off the beach, or in a boat in massive visible schools, and people generally just forget about bait and end up chucking their favourite poppers and slices etc. at them.

also if you have a 4 wheel drive, I highly recommend going down south to or up north camping on the beach, bringing your favourite 10-14 foot rods (I recommend 11 feet) and having a shot at the tailor and mulloway. Just putting a mulie on ganged hooks and casting into gutters. This method catches so many different species including herring, flathead, salmon, sharks, mulloway, tailor, tarwhine and so many more species.

i don't know too much about freshwater fishing here, but I know that saltwater fly fishing in the swan river can be really productive for flathead. I often see people around the canning bridge, casting their fly rod and catching lots of flathead. This could also be an option for you. Apparently the bar-tail flathead that we have in our rivers are great eating as well.

however, the thing that is most like Tasmania here are the black bream. Lure fishing, bait fishing, nearly everything will catch them. There are lots of snags in most rivers, just waiting to be fished for the bream. The only issue that you will find here is that our bream are apparently much smaller than the ones in Tassie. The way to pull the big ones out is definitely with a real light fluorocarbon leader (saggy areas as high as 10 pound with your favourite hard body that you never want to lose, and on the flats you will find 4-6lb is the best, because you fight the bream on your own terms). I go fishing for beam most weekends with my mates, and we mostly use baits, but every few weeks in the summer we will use lures, and I find the best are the plastic grubs. I'm sure from your experience in Tassie, you will know much more than me on breaming, so yeah.

thanks,

lachie

Awesome! Another good thing to do is go onto the fishing wa website and do the month free trial and watch a few episodes of that. Shows some really good episodes and with 15 seasons it has an episode of everything! Even flathead fly fishing!

thanks,

lachie

Happy to Help

Sun, 2015-10-25 14:01

I live in Mandurah & will be able to give you a few tips on crabs, crayfish & fishing in the area. You will find this site to be vey helpful . There are some great guys who give up some hard earned knowledge to fellow members. There are some  much better fisherman than me & although ive been walking the earth for longer than most of them, i continue to learn from this site.

Only thing is Mate, if you keep reminding us that you're from Tassie, we're going to take the piss out of you. Theres a price for everything

Hi Dan and welcome,With that

Hi Dan and welcome,

With that boat you should have no problems getting your fill of crabs, crays, dhu's, baldies, black ass, etc etc

Lots of good people on this site with good info so just ask.

With the fly fishing, fresh water is well stuffed but salt water fly can be fun.

If you need some tips on the crays or Dhus give us a yell when your over, happy to have a beer or 2 and talk rigs, baits etc

Pete

A few options

Mon, 2015-10-26 08:42

With the demersal ban and Cockburn Sound snapper ban there are a other few other options over the summer:

- Perth Game Fishing Club deploys FAD's in November each year, it normally takes a month or so but they are fairly reliable for dolphinfish.

- There have been a few big samsonfish around lately and they should be starting to hit the deeper spots but sharks can be a problem.

- A few yellowfin and southern bluefin tuna starting to show up

- As the Leeuwin current starts pushing south and the water warms up offshore there will likely be a few marlin around.

Australian Salmon are starting to become scarce now, but arrive back in Perth during Autumn.  They are much bigger than the eastern states varieties and excellent fun on light tackle.

Once the demersal ban is over there is some decent bottom fishing, with deep dropping becoming very popular for blue eye trevalla, grey band cod, hapuku etc.

Thanks for the detail mate. I

Mon, 2015-10-26 14:01

Thanks for the detail mate. I was certainly worried about options durring the dimersal ban.. Love my tuna fishing and looking forward to messing with the Sambo's.. Love to get one on fly gear, but from the sounds of it I may have to wait a bit for them to turn on in the shallower water where I may get the shot...

Thanks again,

Dan

Welcome as well Dan- I could show you a few "shallow spots" around the reefs.lol ( Not suitable for boats).

You would be able to relate to the sticker I have on the side of the Ski- always brings back great memories of fishing holidays in Tassie:
