swan river mussels

just wondering your opinons on eating large swan river mussels. got a few real big ones while fishing for bream at the canning bridge and i didnt bother. apparently they can taste pretty muddy nd disgusting. i am a bit iffy about eating local shellfish

Have been eating prawns, crabs, scallops and mussels from the river (Bicton area)for over 15 years and I'm not glowing yet.....! Can't explain the nasty rash though
I probably wouldn't eat them from canning bridge area though - not as much water movement/salt.

hey man.
i have eaten mussles from the river bofore. i recon your best bet is to get them somewhere where these is alot of water movement. jettys are the best cause other people get them there also and they are fresh. i remebmber getting some from blackwall reache before and most of them were dead and had just bee sitting there for ages but at a jetty they get knocked and picked off by other people for eating/fishing/maintenance so they betterand fresher.
i also recon the smaller ones are better. huge ones grose me out a bit. they are also better for you cause like you might have known thye store chemicals in their body and dont release them. smaller ones conatin less chemicals where as the large ones have a compounded amount of chemicals.
if in doubt go to melville fresh $10 for 3 kilos. but i recon they fine out the river.

I would eat them
I love swan mussels! I've had pleanty of great meals on the mussels/crabs from around that area. As long as they are always fully submerged.

Swan River Trust Study
I used to eat heaps of the things myself around mosman bay and blackwall. Straight out of the water and onto a public BBQ with some tabasco and lemon juice - great eating. Freaks out the casual picnicers too!
There was a study conducted by Oceanica for Swan River Trust where they sampled mussels from all the yacht clubs arond (about the worst possible places to collect mussels from). The general finding was that even the mussels from the yacht clubs have heavy metal concentrations within the seafood safety guidelines. As for Tributilyn levels (anti-fouling paint), they found if you ate more than 6 mussels a day for a year, that would be bad.

Eat in moderation
Like all things dont eat them all day everyday. The thing with mussels is that they are essentially a water filter so can be affected greatly by water quality.
When you pick them, find a spot with good water flow, only pick mussels attached to wood and make sure they are well below the water level (oil/diesel/petrol all floats).

I also
eat mussels from the bicton area and they are very tastey. Whether they are good for you or not.....Dunno. As said, movement of the water and whether they are under the water all the time is probably important factors.
Matter of fact, this sunday I'll be diving for them at Bicton, fantastic weather for it!
