Surf/Rock Spinning Rod
Submitted by WODF on Sun, 2009-02-15 13:34
Looking for a good, cheap rod between 9-10ft in length, 2piece and rated to around 8-10kg. Will mainly use it for spinning from the stones using 60-80g metals, want to be able to ping them out pretty far so a rod with a bit of flex would be ideal. For use with 30lb braid and around $150 in price.
Any help appreciated

Shimano starlo stix shorespin
Ive got a 9ft Shimano shorespin and its awesome for Pinging metals.I used to live in albany and it got a workout round the salmon season.I used 6kg braid on that setup but there is a 11ft option if you want a bit more range. Both rods are rated at 6-10kg Mine cost me 130bucks..worth every cent!

The starlo stix is good
The starlo stix is good around that price, but rated to 45g casting. The nexave southern spin is a bit heaver (will handle 30lb no problems) and casts up to around 60g. Might be one to look at if you needed something a bit heavier.
Above that cast weight, the spinfishers say they handle 5oz, so they might be the go if you need 90g+ cast weight. I dont know how 'punchy' they are though. Perhaps choosing to use lighter metals on a rod for them might cast further than heavier ones (as you'd struggle more to cast, and the rod might be more of a beach 'curve'?). I havent used the spinfishers so I dont know though.

running 14lb Its Perfect for spinning off the beach.Nice and light so i can carry it with a backpack on and cover more ground..Depending on the situation i just change the breaking strain of my leader.I usually use 20 or 30lb Fluorocarbon.

What would you say the rods
What would you say the rods limit is? Planning to run a Penn 850 with 30lb Tuf Line XP and a Saragosa 8k in future

I have the 10 foot Penn Powerstick and the 9 foot Starlo.
Both are great rods. The Starlo is a fantastic rod, but if you are also thinking of using it from the beach, the 9 foot size can be an issue in keeping your line out of the waves if there is a shore break. The Penn would have a little more grunt than the Starlo, but the Starlo would have a slight advantage in flicking smaller lures out further.

Thanx Colin, would you think
Thanx Colin, would you think my Penn 850 would be to heavy for the 9ft Starlo Stix? and what would you say it's max lure weight is?
Cheers

Not much over 40g
Not much over 40g unfortunately (from shimano specs). The nexave will do 60g.
As for the reel, my philosophy is if you can go lighter its too heavy
(mostly personal preference I'd say)

if your going to put an 850
if your going to put an 850 on it and belting out 60g+ metals i would probably go the 6810 over the starlo. ive got the starlo and its an awsome rod, but it would struggle to cast the heaveir slices and the 850 would to heavy for it IMO. Ozflex do a nice 10footer but thats a little more than the $100 price range.

Got to agree with Matt and Blake there. The 850 would be
a bit heavy for the Starlo. A nice Penn Applause 4000 or something like that would be good. I quite like the new Abu Garcia Soron's if you are after a reel that is pretty good value for money.

Thnx guys
Which brands do quality 10ft graphite rods? also, is it possible to remove the sand spike on the rods which have them?

xzoga do an awsome 10ft
xzoga do an awsome 10ft stick, superlight but still a heap of grunt. rated to 30 or 40lb, no sand spike, but its suited to lighter reels not really the 850.
for the 850 i would get an ozflex, more suited to that style of reel, oldschool and tough.
Both would be awsome for chucking lures at places like quobba (which i assume thats were youll fish with it given you seem to fish there a bit) for spaniards etc.
Bling or no bling??? thats the question

I actually have just started using a shimano backbone elite but thats a tad too short for what your after.
Maybe just pop into a tackle shop and have a feel of what they have there?

Yep, there are lots of good choices
Personally, I like to go to the tackle shop and get someone to load them up for me. You can go in thinking you will be going there to buy one type of rod and then when you get there you find there is another rod that you find even more suitable.
Personally, I quite like whippy rods. Others like rods with a bit more power in the butt. It really depends on what you feel comfortable with and - sometimes - your casting style.
