They are great reels, especially for the price. I use the 8000 FI for heavy duty fishing from the beach and rocks and a 2500 for bream and soft plastics fishing.
The stradics to me are a great value reel. I have a 1000, 2 4000's and a 5000, all spooled with braid and have never had an issue with any of them. the 4000 and 5000 reels are used by me all the time for snapper, salmon, kgs......
I was looking at stradics a while ago but found them to have a bit more internal friction or inertia or whatever you would call it. I ended up going a sol instead (which is real nice to wind). Try both and you'll know what I mean. Not specifically a shimano thing as I have an aspire that is nice and smooth as well. Perhaps it is to do with the gear ratios in the stradic and sustain? Not necessarily a bad thing, and its not an unsmooth reel, but just didnt feel as nice to me.
(A 4000 sized daiwa should have the same line capacity if you end up looking at other options).
I was going through the old prices in my head. Unfortunately they have risen a few dollars since. Though, feel wise i was lumping the stradic and the sustain together. I'm not in any way saying the stradic a bad reel, just saying it didnt feel as effortless winding as other reels (both by daiwa and shimano, including the twinpower as brenz suggested). The sustain will probably be a more direct comparison to the sol. I guess the tierra will be more of a comparison to the stradic.
you like a reel to feel. I aim to get a Sol as one of my next purchases as they are a cracking reel and I have seen how well your Sol goes Matt, but I do think they are a little overpriced compared to the Stradic
was looking at some not long ago. but like matt above felt they were to "tinnie" and no real strength to them and compared to other reels in that range not the best when winding (inert of the gears meshing together did not make them feel smooth at at) so I chose the Sol.
the Sol just felt like a stronger reel and was real smooth to wind.
but i have used matt's aspire and it is a nice reel.
All good reels can't go wrong with what ever you get just to add into the sol-sustain debate i have both and while the sol is smoother i prefer the sustain and will use it everytime over the sol

But they cost $120 more
I have a Heartland XA (an upgrade on the SOL) and the Stradic and I find both do a great job.

The new Twinpowers are awesome
A clear upgrade on the Stradic if you have the extra cash.
