Sambo jigging

Most of the time i do bottom bashing but im very keen to do some sambo jigging now that the fishing ban is in place. Id like to know what time of year......i venture off mindarie most of the time so in roughly what depth...and also colours and weight. I have no intention of eating the fish , just would love some sport... Could you also tell me leader, line and reel..

reel, line , leader  ... depends how much fun you want to have :)

i use a satiga 4500 with 40lb braid and 60lb leader and that will stop any sambo as long as your not too close to a reef/wreck like the gemini .... they are around all year but school out deep around christmas ... as for colours ... pinks, orange and black are my fav's down here

depends on where you wanna fish.....?

over the breeding season the sambo's will school off the numerous wrecks out off Perth. This is generally deep water jigging at 100-200m depth.

most would recommend PE 5-8 gear as a general statement. Most would use top end reels like stella/van stal/saltiga with anything from 50lb through to 120lb.....these reels hold the required line capacity for jigging that deep.

one can catch sambo all year but generally the larger specimens hold over breeding season off the barges and some travel from SA to congerate.....

I have caught them on bream gear in shallow water to PE 6 jigging gear in deeper water.....

colour should match natural baitfish colours like blue/green and orange.

Jigs can depend on depth but anything from 60-400gram and type of jig depends on current/depth etc.

I use two rods, a PE 2-3 (30lb braid) and a PE 6 (50lb braid) rod with a metaroyal 5000a reel and just swap reels.

as feral says its good enough to stop em.

search the threads and you will see the huge variety jigging offers

but nothing like smashing solid sambos on jigging gear.....they go hard.

good luck

Nov - Feb. Their not off limits.

I use 2-3m of 130lb. You can also get away with 80lb leader depending where you are fishing.

The summer months are when

The summer months are when the sambos aggregate in the most numbers around the barges west of rotto.

There should be a few around gemini or key biscayne at the moment though.

Usually you'd need somewhat specialised gear. Lots of commonly used reels as damo said. Obviously most arent exactly cheap (because the reels need to be tough and deal with some heavy line and constant testing of the antireverse). For a dedicated outfit, most people use spinning setups, but you can use overheads (which you can use bottom bouncing as well). Not all will be suited though.

Line class depends on how much fun you want to have, as Feral mentioned.

Pretty important to get the right rod as well. Many bottom bouncing rods wont be very suitable for jigging (at least for any period of time).

Try no to go too light on

Try no to go too light on the gear even though it would be great fun, as they don't release well if they are too worn out.  Most of us don't keep sambos or if we do it will be a small one.  Getting them back into the water alive and kicking ensures that they will be around for us to have more fun next year.

They seem to be out there in good numbers right now

So get some heavy line, a good strong leader, some big jigs and get out there. And be prepared for a sore back and shoulders the next day.

co-ords..... just go out the back of rotto in november on a weekend and look for all the boats.

Can tell you there is going to be 10 times the amount of boats out there this year.

Some people will need to tak eis easy as ive been out there when theres been 10-15 boats working a school, imagine what 30 baots would be like.

Mate I counted 37 boats following us around last year, just for fun we started jigging over mud with no fish anywhere on the sounder , and the other boats lined up behind us and they pingged the spot on their GPS plotters.

Help

Fri, 2009-10-09 17:49

I Help out on the jigging boat SHIKARI, and yes they do follow as most peoples sounders $hit themselves by the time they hit 80 m and the Sambo schools start in 110m out to 250 not many non comercial sounders can find them.

PS the skipper is the jigging specialist, I am just a passenger .

One question for ya, have you ever been out there in the middle of summer on a weekend on a good day , then you will know what I mean, after 200 odd trips out there I have seen a lot.
