Rigging Skirted Lures

Hey guys, need some help. I'm going to be buying a few skirts in the coming days and was after some advice on the best way to rig them as I'm very new to these lures. The skirts I'm getting are fairly cheap'ish compared to a lot of others, brands include Williamson and Richter. Size of leader and length? Wire or no wire? Diagrams or pics would be of great help. Any other hints or tips would be great aswell.

Thanks

Mate mark richter brings

Mate mark richter brings alot of his lures pre rigged, highly suggest the soft grassy's pre rigged. the only thing you have to change on them is to file down the barbs and stiffen the hooks up with abit of heat shrink.

Yeah, was planning on getting a couple of the soft grassy's as I've heard only good things about them. I just thought like a lot of other things that come pre rigged that they are sh!t quality?

Mark does every one of these by hand HIMSELF so the quality is top notch.

Depends what you are chasing

Depends what you are chasing to whether you need wire or not and as to what was said previously you are better buying prerigged to start off with

once you start buying bits of terminal for trolling it does get expensive, wire, heavy leader, crimps, shackles, shrink plastic brass barrel swivels, large hooks, beads, ect ect ect

Life is short so live it fast

Chasing mainly Tuna, sub 20kg models as these are the most common in my area(inshore and offshore Carnarvon, Quobba and Gnaraloo). We also get Wahoo and mackies so would wire be a better option? I've read 49 strand is the only way to go when using wire for this sort of thing? How much does this affect strike rate?

Cheers. What's the deal with the heat shrink, I mean what is it used for? Hook wise, is it ok to run with just a single and what hook would everyone recommend? I've got a spare 7/0 Owner Jobu, will that do?

The heat shrink is to make

The heat shrink is to make whats called a stiff rig, it is put around where the hook is crimped on the wire and where the wire is joined to mono leader, ive got some rigged up, ill post a photo up for ya to understand. Jobus are ok not my choice for tuna though, too thick of a gauge my choice would be a gamakatsu SL12 or just a mustard light game special.

Is 100lb leader enough? At what point do you start crimping mono?

If its only tuna then 100lb should be enough, what you running on your reels??? I crimp anything over 80lb for trolling, much neater finish. Good thing about the stiff rigs if you do run into mackies most the time you get to land them however there might not be much left of your skirt.

15-24kg

Sat, 2009-04-04 18:40

Right now I'm running 15-24kg for my trolling. Does this make a difference? When crimping mono, this is when thimbles or whatever come into play?

In the picture, what's the bottom hook?

The bottom hook is a gamakatsu SL12. Good for light trolling, 15kg absolute max, will straighten on 24kg. I dont like thimbles, armour springs or just clear tube are my preferences.

Are you wrapping sacrificial anode strips around your SL12's D-Doush?

Hooks

Thu, 2009-10-22 17:41

My vote is for the Dojo hooks but preferably in the heavies not the lights I prefer to release my own fish and at least get a hand on them { just a personal thing }I like the wide gape on the Dojos but seing as your chasing tuna either will be fine or the SL12's as Doush mentioned probably easier to local too..

ps tip on leader material it may pay you to keep a selection of breaking stains and  styles ie hard or flouro on board as some days pelagics will take anchor rope being trolled and others days not even 10lb bream flouro can temp a strike or cube down a trail so if your not getting results either shift the lure position or colour or switch leader....  Cheers
