rare megamouth shark caught.

Fishermen have discovered a rare megamouth shark trapped in a net at a beach in the Philippines.
The massive 15-foot adult male shark was dead when it was found beached on the Barangay Marigondon shores in between the Albay and Masbate provinces.
With only 64 previous sightings of this type of shark ever recorded, it is thought scientists will be able to get a close-up look at the creatures like never before.
The shark's cause of death has yet to be determined but it is thought it's body will likely go on display at Albay Parks and Wildlife Centre in the Philippines.

Yeah right. Given that part of the world, pass the lemons and tartare sauce!

Deep water stuff
Deep water stuff seems to come inshore to die, perhaps--think of the oarfish and other weird stuff that gets washed up just dead or dying--we picked up a broadbill off Oyster Reef at Kalbarri years ago, still alive when it washed up, and it's a long way to really deep water from the mouth of the Murchison.

Megamouth in Mandurah
Years ago there was a Megamouth washed up on the beach in front of my place in Silver Sands. I never got to see it with my own eyes but from the photos it was pretty decomposed. The Phillippines one looks as though its not been dead for long.

I think that Mandurah one...
...is still on display at the Natural History Museum...don't think it was until about the 70's or 80's that anyone knew these things even existed!

Rare
Yes i remember there was quite a fuss about it at the time. As you say, it was hardly know to exist. I recall now that it is or was being kept at a museum.

The last one captured there
The last one captured there prior to this one ended up on the dinner table 2009.
Apparently this time they have actually taken it away for autopsy and say it will be put on display.

Maritime Museum
Go and see the best preserved example on display anywhere in the world at the Maritime Museum in Fremantle. At the time, he was only the 3rd one ever seen. He is one of the specimens I am responsible for :-)
