One must have trolling lure

Ok.  I am off to exmouth on saturday for 9 days of fishing.

Trolling, bottom bouncing, casting.

On the troll we will be targeting spanairds, yft, dollies, cobia, wahoo.

I have a collecton of trolling lures mostly halco laser pros of various colours and depths and giant tremblers and a couple of vent right skirted lures.  What i dont have are any deep diving king browns which i believe the yft like.  If i wanted to add only one more trolling lure to my collection, what would you recommend?

Go!

Thu, 2016-08-11 13:13

Definitely Lively lures, Mack baits. They can be trolled fast or slow, you can drop them down deep on bait schools and they will swim, unlike a lot of the expensive stuff, one macky and they are stuffed.

As many of them as you can afford. Not much doesn't eat them. I like the green or blue mackerel colour but have caught plenty on every colour I've used.

There's a dirty big Salmon swimming around with my bright orange YoZuri Hydradive in it's gob. Still makes me sad thinking it would have probably taken a spoon with a hook in it.

I'm like a magpie whenever I see a shiny YoZuri on special and usually go one flouro and one natural colour. They are one of the best swimming lures I've trolled.

we found the best trolling lures were Rapala Xraps Deep Divers in Glass Ghost and Silver blue mackeral.. they swam better and got more hits than halcos...

Mix it up

Thu, 2016-08-11 14:52

All different shapes sizes and colours . If you're running a spread of four we tend to run a giant trembler or two in close to the prop wash a shallow diver on one side and a deep on the other. If you're greedy a Pakula Witch Doctor is definitely the go.... Colours ? Well spank my ass and call me Veronica... Who knows what colour mood the fish are in . My best lure for last Coral bay trip was a black and red piece of crap looking thing . Mackies loved it though!. Had a whole stack of Halco lures ( deep/shallow divers) not one of em stayed in the water. Really annoying. Tried different speeds and tweaking the bibs yet the little fuckers would always swim to the port side of the boat and jump out of the water. Must get busy and send em back to the factory.

Yep.  We always have a good spread out when we troll at steep point.  Generally have one deep diver, one shallow diver, a gaint trembler and skirt.  And try to mix up the colours if nothing is happening.

We just got back and the lure

Thu, 2016-08-11 17:03

We just got back and the lure that easily did more damage on the mackies than all others was the RMG Scorpion in gold and orange color (i forget the official name tho). We had the hooks straighten on a good one, but when we tried to upgrade the hooks to single's it just didn't swim right.

We didn't run wire as word around town was that no-one was catching makies. We ended up with alot of hits and only 1 bite off.

Certainly the gold colours worked best for during our time - it was overcast the whole time so that might explain it.

Good luck

Richter Soft Grassy

In the lumo green/blue colour. Always the one in the pattern that got the most attention, lost both of ours to wahoo eventually, but caught all our wahoo on them as well. Although the pink/white has been good, too.In hard bodies, try a Halco Max bibless in the large (170mm?) size in Stripey, which is chrome/purple with the longitudinal black stripe. Also the same lure in Blue Sardine, just prepare to have it belted to bits by sails--they just love that colour. All of the Halcos of every type in that colour I have used up there have bill marks all over them.

I have a stripey in my kit. A 2m laser pro.  Has never been hit by anything when i have used it previously.  Will be interesting to see how it goes up there.  I also have a vent right skirted lure with a purple and blue skirt, that might get some interest.

Red and white xrap... same

Thu, 2016-08-11 21:37

Red and white xrap... same colour rmg halcos and the green and yellow also good fish catcher but dont seem to swim as well, fast or true out of the box as the rapalas.

Last year at xmouth I did manage to catch my missus kiwi mate through the bicep with a halco though... biggest catch yet. Had to push it all the way through and cut the barb off with 3 girls watching... boy was I in the shit. It was the last time I tried to run 5 rods out the back trolling with no out riggers and was the result of trying to cast out the side and 5 people aboard.

 have seen deep diving xrap's

Fri, 2016-08-12 11:42

have seen deep diving xrap's bib broken when got hit by a mack wrong way. The wire through construction held it together but it becomes a 1 hit wonder lure...

anyways, I will stick to my Rapala CD size 14 and above, redhed, blue mackeral + green mackeral colors. The metallic bib seems to gives out a lot of sheen tha brings the fish in to have a look, at least that's my opinion...

Sure they were Yellowfin? Usually see lots of Mack Tuna and Longtails busting up. The YF are usually really wide there.
