Octopus traps
Submitted by OLD BANGA on Tue, 2010-08-24 19:33
I am planning on setting some occy traps, I have seen some that are made of a piece of 100mm pvc pipe about 300mm long, with a bit of grano in the bottom, rope attached to a float. Wouldn't this type of trap move around on the bottom too much? Does anybody have a better design or any thoughts on the best way to go about catching occy without diving for them?

My mate uses terracota wine
My mate uses terracota wine bottle coolers, bit heavier than the pvc pipe.

How does he attach the rope
How does he attach the rope to the pot and what stops the float from lifting it off the bottom with wave action? How does he stop the trap rolling around?

I used to use a short length of terracotta earthenware pipe blanked off at one end.

same as the other guys, but
same as the other guys, but no ropes or anthing, other wise they will go missing.
just mark the spot with gps and go back and dive for them.
my dad would dive down with a snatch clip on rope and then i would haul them up.
cheers

PVC with grano base
but I'd recommend 150mm. And as suggested, forget the rope - its a thief beacon.

If you are going to use pvc
If you are going to use pvc it is a good idea to put some flat bar at the opposite end to the grano other wise it will sit up right in the water and the occys seem not to go in them. They tend to move with the current with out the extra weight.

Was a heap out at some of the rocks near Hillarys today. At least heaps of floats near reef, so I assume thats what they were, though I didnt pull any to check of course (but i'm sure some a-hole will, and keep them, hence not so sure i should put my own down..)
Probably over the top and not needed, but I would imagine if you laid some chain, at least the float wouldnt pull the pot (but probably not a problem with enough weight i guess.

We had heaps and
gave them to a mate in Leeman, he's promised us some pickled occie, as he does a fantastic yummo occie. There is a pro in Greenhead that does occie and he has floats everywhere up and down the area, unfortunately people do pull his pots. Fisheries was or are doing a study with him on the effects of having a occie pro from Jurien Bay Nth to past Leeman to see how it will effect the eco system.
Ours was black (some) PVC piping and terrecota drain pipes, agree everybody no floats otherwise you can kiss your pots and occie goodbye.
