day with good weather and im sure you can follow someone out. Always a heap of boats head that way. Once you done it once youll know your way. Gps and maps always help, mind you once youve past the 3 mile reef its pretty much travel by site as the island get bigger and bigger the closer you get. Freo i think there's no real reef to lookout for til your at the island

According to my Navionics

Tue, 2010-08-24 13:53

According to my Navionics charts, there is actually some reef if you go direct to Rotto (champion rocks and nearby). Says comes up to 2m at points (and a few of those little crosses). Though, there are two red lead markers so if heading to Rotto which if you stay to the right of should be ok til you get to them. However, I havent actually been that way, and am just looking at the charts.

According to the chart, theres lots of reefy areas if you're wanting to land at the island, so a chart is probably a good idea.

buy a good chart from any

Tue, 2010-08-24 14:25

buy a good chart from any marine shop. worth it's weight in gold. I have charts for Metro, Rotto and north metro waters on my boat at all times.
http://www.rottnestisland.com/en/pages/Home.aspx
here is Rotto's home page and some maps of the area,
BUT
Besides going to Thomsoms Bay, I'd not try any of the other bays with out a good GPS, sounder and map. They can get mighty tricky getting in and out of the reef systems in places.

last resort is to follow a Ferry in and out of the area.

Funny you say that Tony. I

Funny you say that Tony. I looked up the price of gold and its $44/g or so. That means my navionics gold SD card (which weighs 2g) is worth $88 of gold. However, seeing as it cost $380 or something, its actually costs over 4 times its weight in gold, lol.

Still, i'd rather have accurate charts out on the water than a small chunk of gold...

Wrighty: If you happen to have an iphone or an android phone, you can get navionics charts for them (luckily much cheaper than if you wanted one on a SD card)

Wasnt trying to be a smart

Tue, 2010-08-24 16:11

Wasnt trying to be a smart ass, just thought it was an interesting thing to look into and turns out its worth more than its price in gold, lol :p. So you were right, charts are actually worth at least their weight in gold, haha.

Not keen to try that last option though...... just because then the card would be useless, haha.

Do a tandem trip if you're

Tue, 2010-08-24 14:58

Do a tandem trip if you're worried. Nothing worse than heading out if you don't have any confidence.

But like others have suggested, buy adequate navigational equipment. It's important.

I also carry laminated charts purely as back up.

If you know your hazard

Tue, 2010-08-24 16:40

If you know your hazard markers you should be right. Rotto bays are fully mark out both hazards and channel markers.

Also if you go to the main building in front of the ferry jetty you should be able to get a brochure on all the safe passage ways into each bay. It was free the last time I went there and extremely helpful.

Recommend a chart

Wed, 2010-08-25 13:17

Definately recommend you purchase a marine chart if you intend visiting bays other than Thomson's...

As Ben has already mentioned the rotto convoy conducted by the rescue groups and marine and harbours are a great way to learn how to safely access the different bays.

There's 3 points to enter Thomsons , the biggest is the main channel ,which the ferries

arrive through and had leads to mark the approach . You can't go wrong if you come in this way ,providing you know your isolated danger mark's.

First time at Rotto for me

Wed, 2010-08-25 22:12

First time at Rotto for me was in a the old mans 34 ft Kevlacat I borrowed for the week..........at that stage I knew stuff all about boats..........Thompson bay was a worry.....Rocky Bay was shear terror!

Now days it is auto pilot all around the island in the ali 17 footer...that being said, I did end up on the rocks at the north end of Thompson Bay over Easter when trying to move the boat after dark in a 40 knot southerly........NOT FUN!

Know your markers, have electronic charts and GPS, and take it easy the first time and you'll be right.

Only problem going to Rotto on our own boat is that once you go once, you cant stop going back!

not on the rocks for us, but

Thu, 2010-08-26 10:22

not on the rocks for us, but we got stranded inside a shallow area with less than a meter under us and no way out to deep water when the tide droped to a low! We did not realise we had crept in on a spring high and so had ample draft to get to a great spot off the Southern corner, only to find out to our horror when we wanted to leave we where no surrounded by reef. After snorkling around for a half an hour and finding no safe passage out again, we had to anchor up and spend the night till the high at 2am again and get out! Thank god for good charts and a release weight on a line on the bow to measure your depth the old fashion way to get out.
and
Why you ask did I use that method, cause you transom mounted sounder will only tell you you over a big bloody rocky section after your bow has hit it!!!! :-O

Rotto Convoys

Thu, 2010-08-26 10:18

Whitfords, Fremantle & Cockburn Sea rescue are looking to run a convoy in October (date not set as yet). One day and we will show you how to get there from Hillarys, Fremantle and Cockburn. Also show you around most of the bays on the North and South side of the island. Cost $60 (plus landing fee if applicable) with all proceeds to the sea rescue groups. Also escort back to mainland. I will post details once I have confirmation. More details on attached link.
