Oh shit
It happens all the time with big tides (and a gut full of grog),
Not funny though.

The tides can really catch you out up north.

Familiar
seen this happen more than once for various reasons from bad luck to silly driving. A brand new HR ute back in the late 60's on the tidal flats going into Cape Keraudren - traded the next week, a new Pathfinder in Buffalo Creek in Darwin - Police would have pulled the driver out before the water got too high except he had slung off at them earlier in the night - sent to Adelaide and sold - and i could mention a certain HJ45 but as i refuse to incriminate myself, i won't.

Wilbinga
Few years back a mate was cruising passed Wilbinga on his way back to Two Rocks in his crayboat when a couple of blokes on the beach started waving furiously to him.One swam out and asked if he had a 4x4 and could he drive back up and pick their gear[genny, ice box, rods, reels, tents etc]up after he tied the boat up.
Then he noticed their Hilux in the surf, got bogged ,tide came up and sucked it in was 20 metres from shore.I don't know what eventually happened to the ute, could still be there.
While pro fishing over the years have seen quite a few bogged and swamped but that was the first where they really lost it.Saw a steel bullbar ripped off a cruiser while trying to snatch it out while it was loaded to the top with fish.3x other cruisers hooked together and bang off came the bar,got the ute out though.Welded the bullbar on instead of bolting it just in case it happened again

That reminds me off a few
That reminds me off a few days ago at my local beach,,nothing like that but we battled for 4-5 hours to save a 4x4 that had launched a boat off the beach and was stuck as the tide came in,,,i will put some pictures up tommorow when i got my camera back.
Will an insurance company pay for something lost on the beach or is it tough luck ?
My guess is the lads above lost the keys,,it looks like its on solid ground,,,,

as soon as you hit an
as soon as you hit an unsealed road the insurance company will have nothing to deal with it... its all up to the driver... was at wilbinga and there was a head on smash at the top of a hill with a cruiser n a brand new rodeo.. the rodeo was that new that the insurance papers werent even threw yet (like it mattered) the rodeo got riden off n had to get towed bk to wannero rd for a tow truck.
hard luck.

Theres a tourist spot up
Theres a tourist spot up north that used to claim a 4x4 once a week, a part of the beach was very soft ,,maybe it still does claim a heap of 4x4's,,,i cannot remember the place but folks travelling south along the beach would get the sinking feeling,,,,

A picture is worth a thousand words...they certainly tell the story in this case.
