anyone insisted on hooking up the boat when test driving a new fourby ?

im finding dealers not willing ( perhaps insurance ) , then again perhaps business is booming....and they are too lazy

Would be an unusual request I would have thought.

If you know the real weight of your rig you can find many and varied opinions on the towing capabilities of cars by searching the caravan forums. They love to talk about the towing performance.

 I organised to test drive

Tue, 2015-10-06 16:18

I organised to test drive the new 2.8 litre Prado last break when I flew home. Rocked up to the dealer and the car was out the front ready to go. When I jumped in, there was no fuel. Literally, the computer even said zero k's remaining. The bloke let me take the car round the block which was also through a school zone. Didn't get above 50 k's. Pulled up back at the dealership and he was like "want me to get the paperwork". I told him he was kidding himself and that's not a test drive and walked away. He hasn't stopped calling me since. Even offered to bring it all the way up to Yanchep for another test drive. In reference to your issue, I think if you take it for a first test drive and show your interested, they should let you put the boat on if its the difference between making a sale or not.

Weight might be a problem

I could see it being a problem proving how heavy your trailer/boat rig is, and that it comes within the vehicles legal towing limit.  Sounds like a can of worms for the dealer.

Also if you are talking brand new most showroom stock wouldn't have a towbar fitted anyway.

Funny enough I asked to hook the boat up when I tested the Navara 4 years ago- they thought I was joking but aggreed when I explained I won't buy the vehicle with out knowing how it performed with my boat on the back so they let me take their demo car to try. That was Rockingham Nissan...

Fair comment

That's a fair comment by eziliving, but I wonder how hungry salesmen of today are for a sale. By the looks of the above comment (they will do it) they want your sale and will agree with it and make arrangements to comply with your request.

These are the people I would by a car from.

Recently bought a new car and was surprised how disinterested some salesman are. I called one trying to get a final quote including probably 15k of accessories with the intention of placing the order straight away. Still couldn't get a call back.
Hadthe same experience with a boat yard fairly local to me as well. Maybe its me haha.

I did the opposite...

At the time of buying my boat I had a smaller softroader, and so put an offer on the boat subject to making sure the Landrover would pull it ok. Turned out to be fine but wasn't going to take the chance...

some vehicles are not what they are cracked up to be.

I bought a 2008 prado. The sales man told it would pull a three tonne boat no issue. leagly only allowes two and a half tonne . the gear box ratios are baddly set up. In first, 2.25 tonne cat, got to slip the clutch if going up hill from a stop sign.  To reverse slightly up hill into my garage at Bremer, cant do it in high range, need to go into low. even the haynes 6.65 , 1800 kg, 1st is too high , and reverse , hopeless. if I could have tried the vehicle with the boat on tow, I would not have bought it. Marrisy.
