just bought a shimano symetre for the salmon run, used it on a nexave 902, caught plenty of salmon on it. Got it from kmart when they had 30% off fishing gear so got it for $130 and i must say im wrappped with it. Just wondering what everyone else caught their salmon on?

SOL2500
TD sol 2500 was my choice, as well as a few on the abu6500.
the old boy used a 4000 size pflueger and the mrs used a shakespeare 2500. the shakespeare earned its keep but you could feel it struggling, the flueger was limited only by dad's 2-4kg rod and the SOL was matched a treat to a 2-5kg silstar powertip.
all up we nailed 18 80cm salmon on sunday arvo and had a ball. we all fished rods too light for the fish but it adds plenty of excitement if your rod's about TRIPLED over! haha.

good choices
definitely much more fun catching those big brutes on light gear, ive had a look at the SOL they look like a very handy little reel.

Light gear....
...really makes the diff. Calcutta 200DC on a 4-6kg Pflueger President and 10lb Power Pro braid had me shakin in my boots for a while! One-handed baitcasters are a dream to cast and work lures with but you can get a real workout when the fish start pulling hard!
My son's Sol 3000 coupled with a Nitro Distance Spin is an absolute salmon blaster! Light enough so that the fish can really throw their weight around but just enough guts to lay in to them as well.
Two years ago I picked up a Calcutta 400B and matched it with a Backbone elite...can simply overpower fish with this, not really a fair fight. Probably, from now on, I'll just use it for casting heavy lures at them from the rocks and letting the kids troll with it because there's just no skill required!
Out of the boat you can use just about anything...main requirement is good quality line ( with equally good quality knots/rigging) and a good drag.

A bunch on my Daiwa Sol
A bunch on my Daiwa Sol 2500/Saltwater 7' 6-10lb setup for casting lures and plastics. Got a few on 10lb basshard, then dropped down to 6lb for a bit more work.
I trolled bigger lures on a 20lb setup; Daiwa Sol 4000/Majorcraft offblow pe1-3. Bloody amazing though. I got reefed a couple times on that outfit, I guess it was a really big salmon or a YTK.
