I see around the place some pretty reasonable prices on Penn 850's. Are they the same reel as the one I bought 15 years ago because that has been an absolute pearler.

My opinion is that the older ones have proven the test of time and are mint.
New ones havnt had the same time frame.
Also the old ones are brass on brass main gears which is stronger then the current alloy.
I have 850ss and a 950ss USA. Im always looking for USA ones for sale if anyone has any

Thanks for the info.
Thanks for the info. Certainly don't make most things like they use to.
What reel would be as good and durable as the old 850's?

Up to 200-250 bucks. Would love something a bit more fancy but I can't justify spending hundreds, even thousands on a reel when I have had my trusty 850 catch me loads of spanairds, trevs and even a sailfish. Great off the beach as well.

Boppo, I have a couple of the newer ones that are loaded up with 30lb braid that I have used for bottom bashing and casting (from boat) for a couple of years now. I have had no problems at all, apart from a stuffed bail arm which was due to operator error (shouldn't lend gear!!)

Newer ssm's have a better oscillation system which makes them more braid friendly.

the spheros is a good
the spheros is a good alround reel and are about the same price. I have one of the new pen 950ssm they are an awsome reel but it doesn't have infinate-anti reverse which can be quiet frustrating.
