need help buying rod/reel for augusta

Hey peoples,

This is my first post on here, so please be gentle...

Firstly I don't know the history of fishwrecked but well done to whoever started it and to those who keep it going. I stumbled across it in a google search for Bream fishing!!

I've just returned from a long long stint in the UK (very happy to be home and to see the sun again) and are looking to set myself and the Mrs up nicely with some suitable gear for Augusta. I plan on doing a bit of blackwood river fishing and maybe chasing some salmon when it's around. I'm looking at buying maybe two-three rods/reels to begin with but have no idea what would be a good combination for what's being fished down that way.

I'd really appreciate any help from you peoples. It's like learning to fish all over again!

 Thanks and Cheers

Alexandria  bridge is a great spot to go looking for bream Its about 20ks out of augusta. They get a lot of whitting in the estuary at a place called the sticks, the town jetty is a reliable skippy hangout.some good deep water up past the lighthouse off the rocks but there is a fair bit of hiking to get to some of the spots. The salmon run about easter . people usually head around to hamlin bay to pick up salmon.but im shure you could get  them  any where along there when they come through. With regards to rods and reels speak to the guys at the TACKELSHAK in malaga. got a nice bream combo there the other day.for a great price.

welcome home :)

in regards to gear for down here (im in busselton)

small reels in the 2000 - 3000 size is ample with 8lb braid for your light fishing ..

for salmon and such try a 4000 - 5000 on a light 7 -8' stick

the combos i use are berkley dropshot rods with a nexave 2500 (8lb braid) and berkley dropshot with a 1000 nexave (4lb braid) ... these are good for most fish except salmon off the beach - more line needed (they are fine for the tinnie thou with salmon)

Cheers Feral and UncleStu for the tips on buying a rod and thanks UncleStu for the fishing spots for down there, much appreciated.

I'm heading down to Augusta this week so I'll drop in to Tackleshack monday to pick up my new toys and might go for the combo you mentioned Feral.

In the deeper water just past the lighthouse Unclestu what sort of fish would I be hoping for? I'll have a look around there this week and give that a go.

G'day Byrnedog,

You made the right move by getting on and asking a question mate, plenty of informative people cruising around the traps.  If you need any help in regards to the site, just let myself, Andy Mac, Tim or Colin Hay know and we will try and help out where possible.

Cheers,

Adam

Welcome Byrnedog. Half your luck going to Augusta

Feral's spot on with the rods and reels. I would also think of having a look at StarloStick about 9 or 10 foot for the beach, or a 10 foot Penn spinfisher. Or if you have the bucks, a nice 10 foot Xzoga. Depending on your budget you could match those up with Penn Applause reels or Shimano Stradics,Daiwa Sols or Heartlands or, my new favourite, the Abu Sorons.

The father and son that run the big hardware store in augusta used to do the fishing  write up  for the sunday times  for the blackwood /augusta area . They would be your best bet on whats happning  down that way

Cheers Adam, I will

Cheers Adam, I will certainly be using this forum as a great reference point for all things fishy. The 'search' function here is gold!

Well thanks to the advice from those mentioned above I spent a few dollars at the tackleshack and walked away pretty chuffed with my purchases and am now itching to get down there and throw a line in.

I picked up a nice bream rod/reel combo and a 7 foot penn spinfisher rod with an applause reel, so similar to what you mentioned Colin 1. I must say a big thanks to Brenz for his advice and help in sorting me out especially when it came to me choosing lures as I had no idea. I think I'll be putting in a request for a bunch of Tackleshack vouchers this christmas.
