Moore river?

Hi all,

Im taking the yak out for a fish on friday, and its been a while since ive taken it to moore river. Has anyone been there lately for a fish or know what the river is doing? broken mouth etc?

Im looking to flick around some hard bodies and plastics for bream, since most time i fish there with baits and get smashed by runts and grunter. I can either launch at the boat ramp at the mouth or up river on the south side.

Any help on conditions, or where the bigger bream may hang would be much appreciated!

Thanks.

cant be sure but i heard that the mouth broke a couple of weeks ago not sure how reliable the info is but that was the word. earlier in the year i found some pretty good bream in through the snags up past the dunes and in around that small estuary sort of things which comes of the side a little way up

i think theres enough photos on here and the front of the West to suggest it is reliable. Whether it is still open is the quesiton.

Just back from 3 days at Moore river and the sand bar was through on Tuesday morning.Loads of small picky bream and a couple of Pelicans being a problem.

Take warm gear as wind was from the S/E most of the time.

Maybe consider launching the yak at Woodridge

You can paddle downstream from there and there are plenty of places to have a shot from the river. Either that or launch at the caravan park and head upstream a bit. There are some really good fish in there if you work for them. Brenz is the expert up there.

plenty of just undersize bream, fun to catch and release. but we found a nice bank and had a walk around for a fish and we got hammered with tics, covered with hundreds on us normal ones and tiny ones ... so id stick to the water although id never had a problem before

Moore River

Mon, 2012-07-16 15:12

Hello All

I Fished the Moore River on Sunday using hard bodies. I predominantly fished the upper section from Diamond island onwards late in the afternoon for a few Bream. Both  were just undersize although a bit of fun none the less.

I launched at the caravan boat ramp and the journey to the upper section was a bloody nightmare due to the depth. As a result I don’t have a great deal of paint left on the prop! On that note, I was wondering if there are any other launching options in the upper section? After a brief glance at Google Earth it appears there is a good clearing with water access from Barragoon Rd near the town of Caraban. Can anyone advise if this is suitable to launch a 4m Dinghi or if there are any other launching options?

Also if anyone has any tips, reports or stories from the last week on the Moore River it would be great to hear!

Cheers

Jarrod

jarrod in regards to loosing

Mon, 2012-07-16 15:37

jarrod in regards to loosing all your paint of the prop , invest in a good sounder mate as i have fished that river more times than i can remember when it has been classifies as "empty" as it was open bar and tidal influenced and there is always a deep enough part to get through and sometime we were in a 5.5 m bass boat wich would have a deeper draft than any 4 m tinny. one day the water was far enough out we were launching boats of the beach next to the ramp on the ocean side.. not trying to be a smart ass mate just trying to save you a prop.

Yep need to very careful once

Yep need to very careful once you get past the big dunes. I had part of my prop chewed even though I was folowing the channel with the GPS and using the sounder, the depth was 2m but still manged to hit something.

Thanks for the info Vince,

Thanks for the info Vince, ill give it a go hopefully this weekend. Would sure save me some time getting upsteam.

Brenz, thanks mate, hopefully a sounder helps, the Navionics chart on my phone certainly didnt, it actually completely sold me out!

Is both the upper and lower sections of the river consistant or do you blokes have a prefered area. Not asking for you spots just some general direction. The upper to me seemed more fishy with plenty of good snags, but this type of sealed estury fishing is new to me, different to the Victorian esturies for sure!

I didnt manage to get up

Mon, 2012-07-16 21:44

I didnt manage to get up there due to a pretty bad cold, but im still keen. Good to hear even a few lil bream being caught on lure. Will be interesting to see what the snags are holding with the low water!

Brenz, would you suggest anywhere to try with this low water?

Cheers.

Edi fish , when the water is

Tue, 2012-07-17 06:54

Edi fish , when the water is low look for deep holes that are through out the river, no point in hitting the upriver "teatree" looking snags as i find they all sink to the deeper parts of the river.. when the river is like this i will rarely go past the sand dunes and i will stick closer to the mouth , the first bit of river just upstreem from the ramp has some very deep water which always has loads of fish even when the water is salty. the trick here i find is finding a rocky part of the bank which drops of very quick to deep water and hop plastics along the drop offs into the deeper water but work them slow. up at moore river  if you want to pull the bigger fish use plastics and hard bodies, you will still get the smaller ones but you will certainly find alot more quality .

For this style of fishing the lures i would suggest are.

Jig heads 1/16 #4 or #2

berkley power minnow 3" pearl watermellon

gulp 2" sandworm in camo

berkley ripple shads in galaxia

gulp turtle back worms

z man 2 1/2 inch grubs in watermellon

and if you can get there on a super calm morning when it is still fairly dark shoot to the dunes and cast a few scumdogs or stickbaits around on the flats and they will get smashed (nothing like a bit of surface action)

hope this helps

Moore River

Hiya,

I took my boys up for a fish last thursday/friday...

Had some fun with small bream on prawns but thursday night was the best...

Had met a guy in the caravan next to my site and we went down at about 7:30 to have a crack just to the right of where the mouth had opened weeks earlier ...Locals still pissed of course...

By my second cast i thought i was dragging in weed till i saw a 62 cm mulloway on the line...

I hit another about 30 mins later to the same size..

Both of us had ones we did not bring in but then ran out of skinny mullies...Gr8 night and showed the potential... a bit of weed around though not where we were..

Have a gr8 time!
