I did dive with someone with a long snare the other day, he couldn't see the crays he was trying to loop, too far away!
Short snare, Odyssey brand preferred!

Buy both :)
I use both, depends where i dive.
Some spots require extra length, some spots require shorter length due to the nature of the holes i get into. Also comes down to personal preference.
Also depends on where you're diving - granite or limestone and free or scuba, and your diving/catching style.
After swearing by my short one for last five years or so i've now gone back to my longer one, with exception of a couple of spots i prefer my shorter

Short means you can get it in
Short means you can get it in a lot tighter places and its less cumbersome. E.g. a crack, a cave, a little rift, corner, etc, etc. Long ones are pretty much only ever used if people have spots with realllly deep ledges and not many tight spaces.
Do your self a favour and get an Odysea cray loop. Much better than all the others. Open up the loops and you can see why.

You can always
Strap a light either to the side of your mask or onto the loop shaft so you have better light in the deeper ledges. Slide it in behind the cray, open it up and let them walk back into it...seems to work for me.
