noob question; soft plastics

howdy,   always been a bait or jig fisherman. have a few unopened packs of 7" macarthy plastics and reasonable sized jigheads (biggest ones i could find) in the tacklebox. just never used them...

something about me not thinking they had enough weight to get to where i wanna fish.. 40m  ... i got no problems with a snapper lead and a pasternoster loaded with squid, seems to hold bottom..  but how am i supposed to fish these plastics?

do i run a snapper lead and pasternoster with 2 plastics ?    running sinker to a swivel to the jighead/plastic?   how do i fish them?  can u fish them at 40m?

also lures, can u throw them on a pasternoster with a snapper lead and then bottom bounce ?  will they swim properly?

ive been soley bait for so long and its time to try out something new.. the tacklebox has heaps of stuff ive never used...

any hints?  cheers.

Jig head

Fri, 2012-01-13 11:39

Hi Hekser

Not trying to be a smart arse but  you do realise that you have to place the soft plastic on a weighted jig head? The weight of the jig head gets the SP down to the fish.

Cheers

Brad

Do soft plastics working in

Do soft plastics working in the dark, say a night fish or just stick to the trusty bait?

but i generally fish 40m+   somedays have trouble even gettign a snapper lead (8oz) to hold bottom so im wondering how the jigheads fare... ? i have a bunch of them -biggest ones they had.. cant rememer weight but close to oz  7/0 size hook ... my drama is how will the jighead sink to the bottom and not get caught in current... i guess fishing in 10m of water would be ok.. but i like a bit deeper, if you get what i mean?

i figure pasternoster with a snapper lead and then a jighead with sp loaded onto it is my best bet to get it down.. just wondering?   do you fish them in 30-60m water? i know people do.. just wanna know how to rig them to get them deep?

cheers

Alot of guys

on here use them with jigheads up to 8oz.

In @40m a 3-4oz head should be plenty as long as your drift isn't too fast. Do you use a drift/sea anchor?

You'll need to pick the

Fri, 2012-01-13 14:53

You'll need to pick the weight/jighead relative to the SP you're wanting to use size wise to keep the realistic look of a bait fish.  Once you're in position (above the structure your targeting drift wise) cast ahead of your drift - this will give the SP time to sink before you start draging it through the water.

As Matt suggests a sea anchor/drogue helps manage the speed of your drift whic will in turn help keep the SP in the strike zone.  All boats drift differently so you're going to have to play with it to work out what works with your setup.

yep, we have a sea anchor

Fri, 2012-01-13 15:06

got 7" mcarthys so id be matching that with around a 4oz jighead for best results?   work isnt gong to let me get out this weekend, too many ships in port and im pretty sure they wanna get them done before we strike next week lol :P

hopefully out next weekend

let you all know how i go...

on a side note,   fishing HB lure deep....  running sinker to swivel to leader to lure... good plan of attack?   or paster noster with snapper lead to hold bottom and just let the sures swim in the drift?

cheers
