Hooks

Just wondering I like using circle hooks as you dont gut hook the poor buggers and that makes releasing easier, but whats the best all rounder hook size to use in the circles ? dhuies have those big fat lips that it makes me wonder at times when I get a decent hit on the line if my hook was t small :) and the fish soooooo big :)

SO whast hte best size to use in circles ? :)

No such thing as an all round

No such thing as an all round size in any hook pattern. Match the hook to the size of the bait & make sure it's not too big to fit in your targets mouth. Small hooks catch big fish but big hooks don't catch small fish.

I like the 7/0 black magic KL series.

The taiwania longline hooks are small but have no problem holding onto big fish. They look to be somewhere in the 5/0 size.

Hooks

If chasing Dhuies or any other demersal we generally use anything from size 5/0 to 8/0, As mentioned just match it to the bait your using ensuring you have your hook point exposed. If chasing Dhuies I would use a size 7/0 - 8-0 or if chasing something like Balchin Groper I would prefer to be using something like a 6/0.

Hook size IMO is more about bait presentation

As mentioned. Have a look at Lucanus or other Octo style jigs. The hoohs are tiny but tough, and catch big fish. Bottom bashing I run 2 5/0's conventional on a snell rig, and coral trout have huge mouths to. No dhuy's off Dampier!

Hooks

If I don't know the ground that much, I start of with 8/0 circle, gama or mustad. Usually like to use big hooks, i.e. 8/0 plus, but as mentioned above, depending on bait I'm using. We tend to always use either freshly caught fish as bait, whole or fillets, or full squid tube, locked with it's head.

I had just sized pinkies hammering 16/0 circle hooks, but may be that's why I don't catch as many KGW and Baldies

Try using a 9/0 above a 4/0-3/0 snell on the lower and a 9/0 above a 6/0-5/0 on the upper...  all circles. works well for me.

I find that the Dhu's take the whole bait, and the 9/0 does the work, but smaller fish like BB, KG, Blue Bone ETC will attact the larger baits from behind as they are chasing the bait as you drift... and the lower smaller hook does the job.

ive caught plenty of stonka baldies on 7/0 circles, and you know how big the gape is. Interesting to see how it performs against the conventional larger on bottom. will give it a run next time im out bottom bashin like a stinkin' baito :)

I have been

Running a smaller size 5/0 on the bottom of a 8/0 snelled rig lately.

My thinking is it will pick up the smaller sized fish first up, and in the case of a larger fish going the lot then your covered with your larger hook.

 Carnt say its working though!!

Cant go with 5/0 - 6/0

Cant go with 5/0 - 6/0 BLACK MAGICS MATE, small enough to hook smaller fish (within reason) , big enough to hook the bigger fish :)
