Fishing S.A Margaret River area

G'day fella's,

It has come time for me and my mrs to head away and end our adventures in Perth, as due to work commitments. It has been a decent 6 months in the metro. But a man gotta do whata man gotta do.

Anyway, we are heading down for work in the Margaret River area, about 20 minutes south of it to be exact. The river Blackwood is going to be a short drive away. And From google maps and the past forum post searchs on "Augusta" and that area, I am getting fairly excited to say the least. I cant wait to head away down and get a few casts to check out whats lurking around.

Either way, as I have not ever been fishing much outside the metro area of perth, so all this is going to be a new experience for me, both freshwater in the rivers down that way, and of course the land based chasing for the sea monsters.

If any of you on here can give me some info on the situation on what is caught this time of year, maybe some pointers in the right direction, and any helpful hints or tips would be great. What type of baits, locations, that would be great. All hints for freshwater (blackwood or any other decent river within about an hours drive), and also any sea fishing landbased (no 4x4). Much appricated.

Even if there is anyone on here that is from the area, and is keen to meet up for a fish I will be willing to meet up and share abit of banter and hopefully catach a few fish for the dinner.

Look forward to the help. Thanks in advance.

Give Cosy corner a crack, it has beach and rocks to fish from, all your bread and butter species and a chance of something bigger.

The ocean around Augusta is teeming with all sorts at the moment according to an abalone diver I know there.

Drop into Down south and camping in Margs on Station Rd and they will definatly point you in the right direction.

Have fun and enjoy the serenity

Sound for the advise on that, I will drop into Down South and Camping, With some luck Il be posting up some decent reports from down there.

On cosy corner, do you think facing north is worth a crack, or anywhere along that beach of head of land would do the trick?

:)

Cheers.

Hamelin bay

Wed, 2012-08-01 20:40

You can fis Hamelin bay, down to the right from the boat ramp or around passed the point to the left along the bottom of the cliff.

Further north there is Boranup rock, the turn is off Boranup scenic drive, its a bit of a walk down but usually worth the effort. Either side of the rock on the beaches its a case of look for a deep gutter for herring tailor mulloway and skippy with an odd shark or two thrown in.

Carnarvonite: thanks a million, that hamelin bay area is just a stones throw away from where I will be based with work. Im getting well excited now for a good session.

I will defo try the reef around the cliff, from the maps it looks good.

Are you from down that way yourself? Or do you fish down around that direction often?

Done heaps of fishing down that way as a recreational and pro fisherman on salmon and sharks so know a little bit about the area.

Heading further north to where Russ says [Fawkner family] the spots around Conto springs in the national park are mostly accessable by 2wd and offer good fishing.

To get to the better ones you will need to think 4 x 4 down the track becuase it makes it that much easier and opens up many other top spots

Fair play, did not know you were a pro fisher.

I will have to make time for to get to all the spots now, and try my hand at getting hooked into some of the decent sized fish that are layin around the place down there.

Do you head down that way much anymore?

With the car been my only vechile at the moment, and with no plans to upgrade to a 4x4, i will have to stick to the tracks and roads suited for the 2wd. Better safe than sorry.  Il look into the Conto Springs are in or around the national park, What would generally be caught in those areas?

Tooo cold

Fri, 2012-08-03 14:51

Don't get down that way any more mainly because its too far and also tooo cold after one gets used to the lovely warm weather up here.

At all the spots mentioned you can expect to catch the usual bread and butter fish, herring , skippy, silver bream, tailor, mulloway and sharks from the beaches  and off the rocks, skippy, herring sambos, sharks, a chance of dhufish, pink snapper, queen snapper etc with salmon being available off all of them in season

Going further north from there you can head in on the Moses rock road and not far from the beach there is a turnoff to the left with the track following the coast along allowing you to fish at heaps more uncrowded spots.

Take the time and go exploring, there are plenty of little spots that you can get in to that can produce heaps of good fishing without needing to upgrade to a 4x4

You gotten soft skin now so, gotten to used to the perks of the Perth Sun.. lol

Im sure i can manage the cold for the moment, hoping it wont be long before the summer heat starts to pick up abit down there, even so, I think if all comes to all Il just hide in the forest on the banks of the rivers, be a little better sheltered.

But i will be defo be exploring alot as the misses will be keen to get out and see the place. So Il be happy to use that as an excuse to bring the rods, ""just incase""

Glad not all of the decent places are only accessable by 4x4, so the ol car of mine is going to get a run for its money. Cant wait to get stuck into something decent, and have a good chance of catching them. With the perth metro, as you know yourself alot more than me i am sure. unless you have everything to a T or just pure lucky, you wont catch all that much, due to the amount of over fishing/ lack of fish.

Im even surprised that you can catch Dhu fish off the rocks in so close, thaught they were more a deep water/ further out species, did not expect them to be in shallow waters.

Fair call there. I had forgotten about that. Good reminder.

Just a quick question? If you are fishing on private property, which you may have the permission of the owner to fish his/her land that the river is running through, is it still needed to have a permit?

Also, with the bream or other fresh water speices in that area, what is the bag limit/size limit?

If you are fishing the Blackwood River below Great North Crossing then you dont need a freshwater licence. Above the crossing yes you will need a licence regardless if you are on private property as all the rivers down there and their banks are public. Your main bream spots are down strem in the tidal brackish water anyway, around Warner Glen and Alexander Bridge. At certain times of year you can even get schools of Herring, Whiting and Tailor(smallish) near Alexander Bridge. Makes for some light tackle fun.

Check fisheries page for the latest info on size and bag limits on the Black Bream.

Where abouts are you living down there, Karridale? My Uncle runs a beef farm further East along the Brockman Hwy in Nillup. I have done a fair bit of landbased and river fishing down there and will PM you some of my more better spots, id dont really get down there that much nowadays only a coupld of times a year around Easter when chasing Salmon. But there are good fish to be had in the region year round.

Nice one for that info Buz,

Thu, 2012-08-02 11:24

Nice one for that info Buz, Great to get detailed info like that. I may purchase a permit so, just for peace of mind if anything. I will actually be living in the warner glen area, not far from the alexander bridge area. I am surprised the tailor, herring and whitting would go that far in land up a river, taught they were more sea/salt water fish. Light tackle fun is the best fun, its what im more used too, been from an Irish river system background. Cant beat the chase and fight on a light gear.

Il check the fisheries page for the bag limits and such.

As I was sayin, il be living literally on the black water itself, in around the warner glen area. So Im getting well excited now from what you are saying. I will look forward to the Pm with the spots you recommend, as it will give me a great base to start from and get stuck into some fish for dinners and for fun on my days off.

if you are ever down this way again in the next 3 or 4 months, Il be there until around november, as plans stand. But it would be great to meet up for a fish and bit of banter. Would there be salmon around this time or year. Any straglers or the odd lost fish? lol

cheers for the response. Look forward to the PM.

Your in a perfect location to use your Irish skills

Thu, 2012-08-02 10:38

Plenty of great fishing in the rivers around that way. Nothing like a nice sunny day in amoung the forests. Perhaps hire a dingy now and again and really give the river systems a good workout. Coastal fishing is great given the right conditions. Don't forget the burley and the camera. Good luck down there.

Vince, Great to hear from ya mate. Hope your not long at getting back into the action again.

I am well excited about using the river skills again. its been way to long since hitting freshwater, targeting the big boys in the darkest holes hiding around the bigger snags. It will take me a while Im sure to wonder the banks, or float down in a dingy and sus out the area, but I will be sure to post up loads of pics on Facebook and here of course.

Thanks for your hints, tips, The burley will be well used, and With some luck the camera too.. :)

And be carefull

Thu, 2012-08-02 17:08

when fishing the rocks, they can be deadly for the inexperienced, watch the swell for a while and then

remember to NEVER step on the black stuff you will be in the water in a flash and probably wont get out.

Lots of people have died down that way, Dont Join them.

Thumbs up to that

Thu, 2012-08-02 17:13

Good stuff. I've heard of that alright, meant to be like ice,  Its similar back in ireland, just watch the swell, keep an eye on ocean, and never step on or use any rock with the green stuff/weed/black stuff.

Sounds for the heads up, And I am no chuck norris, so Il be keeping well up on the rocks, if i venture that direction, dont want to add to the statistics.

What exactly causes them to be so slippy, is it a build up of sea weed/algae?

Just the algae

Thu, 2012-08-02 18:09

It's just the speiceis of algae it's basically like SLIME when you rub it through your fingers.....green stuff not so bad

you could do worse than buy an inflateable life vest for that type of fishing

there are some nice spots to fish just south of conto's. you dont need a 4x4 to get to many locations down that way any more but the better spots a 4x4 is needed. some location now have anchor points fixed to the rocks to tie up to. get youself a bouyancy vest and a nice length of tie down strap . better to be safe than sorry

Foul Bay Cosy Corner Black Point

Fri, 2012-08-03 09:26

GDay Mucsavage

have fished the area quite a bit over the last few years with a bit of success. We have hit the big bait and balloon sector from foul bay a few times with bronze whalers, sambos, and some great sized tailor being landed. Getting to your spot early is the key. Being able to spot the fishy sections is important, as is building your live or dead bait supply. dont hesitate to drop into dunsborough outdoor sportz, and we can sort you out with gear and more advice.

cheers,

Nice one Zac,

Cheers for the heads up, if i get a chance il defo pop in to you guys in the store, always good to have a tackle shop near by, I think youl be abuot 1 hr away from where il be living, So with some luck I can make a weekly or monthly trip to stock up and get all i need. if the misses doesnt steal the car on me. haha :P

The ballon fishing is new to me, never put me hand at it. Heard it is meant to be a great way to fish when you have the time and the fish are on fire, I would like to maybe try it some day.

Cheers

Don't worry its been pretty

Fri, 2012-08-03 16:18

Don't worry its been pretty quiet for me as well lately. Just keep perserving with it, try new things and before you know it things will change. Same happened when I started fishing Perth last November after going to Kalbarri having not fished for ten odd years. Got stuff all for a couple of months before a bit of know how and change of tactics got me some decent catches.

I'll be landbased but currently as clueless as you are as to good spots so I am watching with interest. I'll be there mid October...would be keeping it pretty local even though the other family who we are going with would have a 4wd...hopefully they like fishing as much as I do. If your still there then I'll be up for a fish. Can easily get down Warner Glen and hit the river around the Alexander bridge.

With some luck now the family will be keen, if not, take a trip to the ""shops"" for a few hours.. Il sneak off the farm for a walk, and we fish the life outta the place for the day..lol

With some luck now I can start to post advice in the future to help all teh lads out here that have helped me, rather than drain peoples brains for tactics.

Iv my Fingers crossed now to start adding to the tally of fish and PB's and the likes..
