Fads today

HI Guys Hit the Fads this morning and most of the day. Managed to land quite a few with the best topping 18 pound and nearly 130cm long. Great to see a lot of the guys out there. It was a magic day. Ps Alfred I will send you some of the footage we got of your dollie under water when I get it.

Cheers Paul

Think I saw you out there.

Fri, 2008-05-02 19:29

Think I saw you out there. We went to the first fad (forget the name) and there were no fish there, couldnt find the next two, so went to the hillarys one. as far as I remember theres 2 others missing as well, so that would mean theres only 2 fads out! The current was pretty strong, so perhaps the other two just had the float dragged underwater?

Unfortunatley I didnt pick up any fish for the day, but I saw Alfred/Kaitan pick up a few, pgreens boat on a coupl, and ryan on the fly (he makes it look so easy). That flyrod had some really nice curves in it, you could tell it cost a lot and I dont know anything about fly fishing :p

On our boat, only one was landed (member till) at about 7kg. Another hooked but the line broke on afreds motor.

The only hit I got was when I was untangling a birds nest (damn cheap baitcaster). Instant 'ping!' :'(  Nothing after that except for a bump on a storm SP. Chucked every thing I had at them and it seemed they'd only take mulies (and not mine when I had a clear line).

The drift was pretty bad though, too fast. Current drift too so sea anchor was useless. Funny to have boats drift through, then head back around and repeat. Its like getting on a ride or something.

There was also a dollie with a hook in its mouth attached to a line attached to the FAD which kept leaping high out of the water. Amazing how high those dollies can jump. Very acrobatic.

Oh, and the fish till caught had someones busted off line on it. Get this, braid to a swivel clip to another swivel clip direct to a hook (and the hook point was broken off). Some people have no clue :p

Hopefully the FAD's will be in long enough for another fish, otherwise it looks like the dollies have evaded me and I wont get another crack til next year  Frown

Hi Paul

Fri, 2008-05-02 20:00

Hi Paul

Was good to see you out there. Who were you filming for? Would much appreciate the footage! The largest we landed was also 130cm, don't know the weight though as I don't have scales. The big one that busted off, now that was a good fish. Theses critters grow fast, just a couple of weeks ago they were only 110cm.

Must say that I didn't expect to get into any fish today, with 6-7 boats buzzing the FADs, but we got Kiatan on to his first mahi right away and it was a decent fish for a first! He was smiles all the way after that!

Ozlobster, Good to meet you!

So far this is the largest lot that I have seen this year. They have nothing on the last batch last year though.

Now how do we rig it so that the boat that hauls in the FADs has engine trouble and has to be laid up for a month or so?

I forget the name, but it did also have penguin in the name (and so did another boat making 3 there). It was the ally center console. John McLaren (ozlobster) was the skipper, and pointed your boat out.

I'm a little confused though, alfred said you were filming, but then I think hes getting your boat and Steves boat confused. Steves boat was filming (could hear him explaining something about rods at one point too), had a diver as well.

*WAVES ALL* I was the chump hanging of the prow of John's boat, with Matt.

Yeah there was Penguin with the diver, and then Penguin something or other that offered us some live bait towards the end there, yellow colour?

You were on the one with the diver?

Did you guys notice the tangled dolly, we were going to catch you to send your diver down for th  e line =)

Cya,

The yellow boat was the one with the lady on board that showed the guys how to catch one!  Well done!

Pgreen1's boat had the film crew.

It was odd that the live bait didn't get much action this time round.

Yes I had the film crew, the diver and everything else on board. We did get some good footage of several dollies with lures still in their mouths and a couple with wounds from missed gaff shots haha as far as I know Hillarys and club marine are the only two out there at the moment. Why we were filming well time will tell.
